It's okay, Tiffany. I can tell you, as an indigenous person (Pit River Achumawi), that there's no need to feel any type of way about the stereotype of Native American mysticism in this book. Trust me, that's one stereotype that we actually find hilarious. Yes, we are a proud people with a beautiful culture and rich history, but we are also the first ones to laugh at our own stereotypes, and as long as people aren't laughing at us, we always welcome everyone to laugh with us. A'ho and Happy Halloween everybody!
I love that Superman and Flash are sent into crippling existential crisis at the sobering fact that they can be cold or hurt or be caught up to and Wonder Woman's just like " I'm not hot anymore, this is BULLSHIT!"
Immediately my dumb retconning mind says "The doorway is to the Dark Multiverse." These creatures are from the Dark Multiverse they're facing the fires of the World Forge and an absolute end. They escape into DC where things are never ending, they fear fire (World Forge shit), and the embers of the World Forge were unleashed on Mars destroying the Martians. And now this book is a Tales From The Dark Multiverse and thus a ComicPOP classic.
Remember Evolution with David Duchovny? The aliens from that movie "evolved" super fast due to their unique physiology interacting and adapting when exposed to fire. Evolution came out in 2001 and JLA: Scary Monsters came out 2003... It's like Clairmont had the movie on in the background and jumbled a few details around like replacing fire with cold and the JLA with Head & Shoulders shampoo.
Plastic man is one of my favorite superhero characters of all time. Love the design and I love how flawed he is as a person using his abilities to mask his imperfections
It’s so funny. The characters you guys hate the most are always my favorites! Lobo, Guy Gardner, Booster Gold, Plastic Man, Damian Wayne 😂 it will never end.
You need to get characters like Swamp Thing, Raven, or even Spectre involved. I feel like eldritch stories should involve more eldritch based characters even if they're not inherently cosmic
No, see, Plastic Man acts like that so we could get the full title, Scary Monsters and Super Creeps. This does lead to me wonder, who's a worse unused character, Kishana or Apache Chief?
As someone of Native American dissent and having known my native American family members, we do not care if somebody calls us American Indians to us it’s similar to when English speakers say Spain instead of España or India instead of Bharat, Bharata and Hindustan. I don’t expect someone to call my ancestors Ani'-Yun'wiya' instead of Cherokee even I can barely pronounce it. Also to us there is no difference between showing a Native American being spiritual and showing a Englishman or Norwegian be spiritual both are stereotypes used in mystical fiction. I understand that (a very vocal) minority of people also from native descent don’t think this way (my sister being one of them) but I personally and most of my family don’t care unless you get something you could have googled wrong.
I think that Wonder Woman keeps turning into things in JLA adventures It's because they know she's made out of magic clay and they know that in the ending she will be fine.
Also, when the question came up as to why Superman doesn't turn into things more often, all I could think of was that weird New 52 storyline like a decade after this book came out when he got the Doomsday virus, as well as elements from Brainiac and Lex Luthor, and yeah, probably a reason as to why it doesn't happen much after that. But there are some odd examples here and there, of course, like the many weird Red Kryptonite stories in the Silver Age, that time he got Cheetah'ed in N52 Justice League, the Red and Blue era, his Elseworlds transformations into a dragon and a zombie, etc., but I can't blame them when so many of those are relatively obscure.
Oh wow, it's been a good while since Tiffany was in the middle doing her thang. I had no idea Claremont wrote stuff for DC. I'm not really surprised this story is kinda lackluster though. 😅
Honestly, from the description of the story, with some heavy fixing of the scientific ideas this could've really been interesting. I was sure that the whole time the creature was only maybe half physically there and half mentally altering their perception of reality and THAT'S how it could keep up with Flash, because he didn't even really try to run from them because that is something he could mever imagine happening and that specifically gets targeted. And the monsters being naturally from a place that is so cold that even atoms move slowly and just being able to move and evolve more freely in a warmer place
39:40 Reminds me of that Justice League episode where Batman is calmly calling for help while falling because he "cant fly. At all. Now would be nice."😂😂😂
If you really want Ethan (or maybe Sal) to lose it you should read that Tenth Circle book Claremont wrote. Most confused mythology and history I've ever seen. Greek vampires from Christian hell who identify their organization with Roman numerals.
I love the idea of Superman not caring about getting hurt in a fight, but whining about something inconsequential like feeling cold, or a scrapped knee.
Really enjoyed this episode. I remember finding this when I was 11 I was Cool the justice league fighting monsters this will be epic.. and every issue I was like... But what is happening? And totally thought at the end hold on... Isn't that just Jean Grey??? Why The hell didn't Batman call Alfred and say bring me my predator armor and your elephant gun I gotta fight WW and what in the name of salt and vinegar crisps is the flash doing in this book?? Like a small child getting caught at tag he's sat with his head in his hands like I got caught I'm out :( Also really liked it when Tiffany told us where other writers and artists were during the books creation. That was a really nice touch. Keep up the good work guys 👍 much love from the UK
I was picking this up in floppies when it was coming out, and I had completely wiped it from my memory. I remember thinking the Joe Kelley run was fire at the time though.
This. Has hints of some of the .....other well known else worlds jla vs predators/ jla :act of God with supes expressing our the pain he's feeling 😂😂and everyone having monsters that mimic and or match their abilities
It really feels like the entire story is just filled to the brim with the writer clearly not thinking about the implication of certain character actions.
I saw Legend, Ben, though i can’t say i heard it to well with Cruise whispering all his lines. Tim curry is a legend but at best the movie is a three maybe even a two
39:27 well to answer Ethan’s question Batman couldn’t glide like we know him to be able to today until Dick Grayson was Batman while Bruce was trapped in time. Most people assume he could because of how he’s drawn jumping but he just never stated that he could glide until did Grayson specifically put that capability in his suit
17:44 in response, a green lantern can do everything plastic man can do but better. So if you have a GL (and 2 in this case) plastic man is unnecessary
Tiffany pointed out something interesting, the fact that the female character has multiple ethnicities and racial backgrounds. Most AA do, but there's nothing to celebrate as it was forced in most cases. You never know who might be a relative!

I legitimately appreciate this comment. I seriously hope that if anyone is interested about some of the info in this book that they research it!
The funniest jokes I’ve seen about native mysticism has come from indigenous people poking fun at the stereotypes and at themselves
I love that Superman and Flash are sent into crippling existential crisis at the sobering fact that they can be cold or hurt or be caught up to and Wonder Woman's just like " I'm not hot anymore, this is BULLSHIT!"
Sal really gave it his all with the editing

Diana screaming I'M NOT PRETTY ANYMORE is something they would definitely do 😂

"I thought we established that 'tookie-tookie' and 'ca-caw-ca-caw' don't work Wally?" - Bruce probably
October always means a Tiffany Spooky Episode!
The real Scary Monsters were the the actions of Plastic Man Claremont wrote along the way
I miss the person I was before I knew what a Plastic Man Skinsuit looked like…
Do you need a hug?
Plastic man is one of my favorite superhero characters of all time. Love the design and I love how flawed he is as a person using his abilities to mask his imperfections
after putting probably hundreds of hours into watching these episodes, yeah. i'm gonna keep watching 👌
Yayyyyy a Tiffany back issue. Let's gooooo. It's magic horror time
This is easily one of the funniest episodes of Back Issues I have ever seen. Y'all was on one when y'all recorded this!
"Foreshadowing"..... I foreshadow that I'll love this episode of Back Issues.
Hell yes ! An almost 2 hr back issue with tiff as the host 🎉🎉 and a ...."spooooky"
book lol
Scary Monsters is also a fantastic David Bowie record.
Also the stand of Diogo Brando in Jojo's part 7
Dollar bin stories make for some of the best back issues 😊😂
It’s so funny. The characters you guys hate the most are always my favorites! Lobo, Guy Gardner, Booster Gold, Plastic Man, Damian Wayne 😂 it will never end.
Okay but the ken burns section made me laugh so hard I fell out of the shower
Eldritch and superhero should go together more often.
You need to get characters like Swamp Thing, Raven, or even Spectre involved. I feel like eldritch stories should involve more eldritch based characters even if they're not inherently cosmic
I didn’t know Chris Claremont worked on JLA, this should be an interesting recap, plus I’m always down for Lovecraft
I didn't know either I only know Claremont for his Marvel books
No, see, Plastic Man acts like that so we could get the full title, Scary Monsters and Super Creeps.
This does lead to me wonder, who's a worse unused character, Kishana or Apache Chief?
Those better not be Ethan's special gluten free pretzels Sal!
The Ken burns part killed me!! ☠️

I'm crossing my fingers for a Junji Ito episode someday
Tell the publisher to stop striking videos about it.
@comicpop Aw man, that sucks. I hate when stuff like that happens. That seems to be happening with a lot of mangas recently
@@sombrashadow0013if you haven't seen it, Tiff did a Good Bad and Ugly episode on Ito
Claremont was really working through some unresolved issues with this one

Yeah DC keeps transforming their characters into other things all the time, in death metal Superman turns into darkseid I think.
Love the Tiffany scary episodes!
The title makes me think of the David Bowie song, so I keep adding "Super creeps" anytime the name comes up
I think “super freaks”.
@@daelen.cclarkwell I just learnt the lyrics so it's an easy mistake to make
Wearing Plastic Man as a Symbiote is a choice.
Oh wow, it's been a good while since Tiffany was in the middle doing her thang. I had no idea Claremont wrote stuff for DC. I'm not really surprised this story is kinda lackluster though. 😅
Up until now, the only Dc work I knew he did was the X-men teen titans crossover which was amazing
@loganthomas2421 he also did a series called sovereign seven
@@loganthomas2421Dang it, I somehow forgot about that crossover. Great B.I. episode as well!
I see Ethan is in his luberjack era.
Kinda looks like Ben and Ethan swapped clothes lol.

I've always assumed Ethan's job is something science related. Does anyone know if it is?
I majored in physics as an undergrad. Currently I work in IT.
I am 100% convinced that Batman has the Miraclo formula and just doesn't tell anyone else about it. He clearly has superpowers on many occasions.
I love the idea of Superman not caring about getting hurt in a fight, but whining about something inconsequential like feeling cold, or a scrapped knee.

19:15 The writer of the group is the reason they get to stay at a fancy resort? Can't imagine why a writer would add that to the story...
ayyyy more comicpop!!!
I remember seeing parts of this in a Peddlers Mall a very long time ago. I cannot remember if I found them all but the art definitely caught my eye

Love the editing and graphics in this episode. So dam fun 🤘🤓🤘

I saw Legend Ben. Great movie!
Beginning of the video: Chris Claremont!😮
Ending of the video: WTF Chris......🥺
It really feels like the entire story is just filled to the brim with the writer clearly not thinking about the implication of certain character actions.
Don't worry, Ben, I saw LEGEND and it's awesome!
It’s the Scary Monsters vs the “Superfreaks”
Recommend checking out JLA: Seven Caskets if you want an interesting JLA horror book
I always appreciate the comic creation lore discussions.
Great back issues everyone especially tiffany telling this amazing story in my opinion. :)
I needed this, and I needed it to be 100 minutes long.
I saw Legend, Ben, though i can’t say i heard it to well with Cruise whispering all his lines. Tim curry is a legend but at best the movie is a three maybe even a two
Woohoo! Spooky time. 🧙♀️🧙
I saw Legend Ethan!
I brought Mac and cheese😂😂😂
Awesome! It's always interesting to see videos on books that are just "out of time" lol
Plot twist:
The monster is lactose intolerant. Mac and Cheese critical hit.

This episode is almost as scary as the prospect of not getting another episode of Harbor Patrol! Eek!
👻SPOOKY TIME! 👻
Plastic man is awesome
Hooray spooky!
This was such an entertaining and funny spooky episode. It blew my mind that Chris Claremont wrote for the JLA.
I was born in 2003 when you said this book came out 20 years ago it made me feel old

Hey! I SAW "THE LEGEND"!!...((
You had me at vs
While what he does is kinda creepy I kinda like plastic man I mean what guy doesn't want to be with Wonder woman 😅
No David Bowie joke?
Speaking of Native DC characters, it sucks there's a small number of them, besides Bill and Charles Great Eagle.
Whenever I think comic horror I automatically think Mike Mignola.
1:34:04 Martian Manhunter has Superman's Heat Vision?!?!?
Tiffany pointed out something interesting, the fact that the female character has multiple ethnicities and racial backgrounds.
Most AA do, but there's nothing to celebrate as it was forced in most cases. You never know who might be a relative!
It'd all good Ben, I've seen Legend, and I had the exact same thought.
Tiff is easily the best host on this channel.
You don’t have to pick a great book to make a great Back Issues!
Hey guys! Please do Age of Apocalypse!🙏🏼
Is tiffany top a are you afraid of the dark reference?
It is!!
Does anyone know where I could find the Chris Clairmont interview where he discusses this book?
Wonder Woman always gets turned into things because shes made of clay
When are we going to get Ben’s Back Issue Episode about the comic adaptation of Legend?
THE HALLOWEEN EPISODE!
