This was great at every level. Your sense of humor helped to brighten the discussion of a dark and disturbing topic. I also appreciated your willingness to present different interpretations of the historical evidence, to contradict one another, and to acknowledge the questions that remain unanswered. I even enjoyed the code-switching, which forced me to listen for possible English words and cognates and to note vocal inflection--something that usually happens unconsciously if at all.
Most media content I've consumed from India has been extremely superficial, prone to conspiracy theories and misinformation, and more interested in flattering Indian culture than in telling the truth. Even the comment sections have seemed to me to be filled with bots pushing disinformation from state actors and thinly veiled advertising for the media source or for dubious investment advisors, for instance. In contrast, you and your audience are AUTHENTIC. I think that is really important in this era of "fake news" and a general epistemological crisis. So thank you for that!

    1. societies act similar irrespective of race or time given the same socio-scientific environment.
    2. Evidence or lack of there of of sacrifices, or anything else for that matter, should not make us feel inferior or superior as we (humans) all are the same and would act the same given the situation.

The first China civilizations with writing system the Shang Dynasty (1600 BC to 1045 BC) also during the period of Bronze Age, there are evidence of human sacrifices. In fact, human sacrifices were kept for the purpose of sacrificial rituals. The source for sacrificial humans are from mainly from vassal state, prisoners of war, war slaves and purchased slaves. It was until Qing Dynasty, human sacrificial rituals ended. Apparently since late Zhou Dynasty, human sacrificial slowly ended, human sacrificial were replaced by figurines as seen in Qin Dynasty, but was later picked up by the Ming Dynasty, where childless concubines were hanged and praised for their loyalties.

Vedic religion doesn't include puja it involves mantra recitations , havans , yagnas where certain animal and at times human sacrifice took place which later became symbolic/metaphorical because people became more ahimsa leaning , this was also the time when already existing shramanic cults of Jainism and Buddhism gained popularity.
Puja the very word and concept is non vedic in origin.
Puranas accomodate other non vedic cults like shaktism as well.
Vedic religion worships nature , more like what it is . Puranas anthropomorphise these deities that represents forces of nature or a god depicting a special attribute. For example Devi Laxmi is potrayed as a human surrounded by gold wheras in vedic religion , vayu need not be represented as a strong human but is worshipped more or less as the way we observe air.
Vedic religion starts off as karma kaand and later becomes philosophical.
Puranic hinduism is a khichdi of karma kaand , philosophy , legends ( Kathas, at times non vedic ) , worshipping ( puja) ,

Study about tantra. Maybe you will find reason for giving sacrifice. A energy is given in bargain to attain certain energy. A refined tantra energy sacrifice would be self energy sacrifice. ( Prana pratishtha of temple idols) a crude sacrifice would be animal energy sacrifice, primitive tantra sacrifice would be human energy sacrifice.
A simple rudimentary example. Without sacrificing the fruit (energy) we won't have energy for ourself. So to open an domestic of energy, we may need a extra energy to crack the door open. So if you don't want to sacrifice your energy, you will substitute it with something close to you. i.e. human in primitive way, a animal or plant based life in crudest way, self energy in refined way.
Another example for car lover AIM without sacrificing oil which is burnt at the atler of piston inside the shaft no enery can be produced to move the vehicle.
So in my limited knowledge. Think in terms of energy while you look at sacrifice to attain something from someone divine.
Without the sacrifice of heat energy of sun or fuel, water won't transform into vapour. Without the sacrifice of energy by water vapour ,won't trun into cloud and henceforth

1:20:12 Moreover, what is the fundamental problematic thing with human sacrifices? That its torturing/killing a human for attainment of higher good/virtue, collectively or even individually, or that its an act of virtue/bravado.
The industrial scale othering and genocide that has happened under christianity and islam for the same higher collective good(again revered as an act of virtue/righteousness, fighting the infidels), infact universalised here making it even more dangerous and widespread, easily makes up for the entire history of human sacrifices by ALL the other sects, and then some. No one comes close to them in terms of the death/torture/suffering caused.

One question Sir, what is link between Human sacrifice and cannibalism? I read somewhere that Aztecs cannibalised to supplement protein deficiency in prevalent at that time in Mexico. Further Eskimos indulged indirectly in human sacrifice through forced suicide , due to food shortages. Is it true?

      @Iyervval Год назад

The protein supplement theory has been comprehensively busted. Forced suicide isn’t really sacrifice

Kushal/Abhijit, I have a doubt, I have heard that to participate in any yaga one should be in grihasthashram and yaga yajaman or the one who is initiating yaga should do along with his spouse. And Rama did Aawa medha yaga but Sitama was not with him by that time. I also have heard the same explanation of this yaga, which is so similar to what Abhijit said. Can you clarify two things? 1) Without spouse at his side, how Rama even started the yaga and 2) Which text describes the mentioned yaga?

Before eating we give food to Agni. Similarly when we want to eat meat during festivity, we offer it to god first to make them happy. There can be multiple different reasons for human and animal sacrifices.
