I really appreciate that! For a client or a real fancy piece you might want some higher grade lumber, but if it's just for you then wonky 2x4s can be good enough!
I never would have thought to screw a board to the edge of my bench and treat it like a vice. I already did it and I'm using it to hold a piece while I apply edge banding. It's working great and it took me longer to find just the right scrap than it did to accidentally screw my clamp to the bench. I mean attach the "vice".
