- An AEW fan wakes up from a 5 year coma! The year is 2019 and Tony Khan and the Elite have created an alternative to the WWE. All Elite Wrestling. Fans are happy as the WWE product had grown stale. Fast forward 5 years and CM Punk has left after the All In brawl, Cody Rhodes left and became the world champions at WrestleMania and this AEW fan has woken up from a coma to see his beloved AEW in a different state than it was before. Cornette seems to be making a fortune encouraging hate toward AEW and on social media ,people like to be negative.
There seems to be some sort of tribalism over being fans of one company or another instead of being wrestling fans.
I watched the episode of AEW featuring the Bucks setting up a match with FTR and the Punk clip is just a small part of it and they don't even mention his name but essentially they were setting up a FTR grudge match and goading them with the clip.
Punk was very happy to be given a job in AEW and it helped him get back in WWE but he seemed to expect the clip to be shown and expected it to make him look bad so preempted this by going on social media before it came out selling a version of the story 7 months or so after the event.

I have never seen more people spin something small into a monster hate fest. When Triple H said his ridiculous statements about Osprey and Okada, nobody, especially AEW fans, made a big deal of it. Ronda Rousey just detailed how toxic it is to work for WWE and nobody even cared. I am not a WWE fan, but I understand if you like entertainment with a little wrestling to set up the stories, but don't hate on AEW for actually focusing on wrestling. The WWE fanbase's who claim to victory is that CM Punk is proud of being an egomaniac bully. They think this is all Jack Perry's fault for not just obeying CM Punk's orders and it isn't a big deal that he put a fellow employee in a headlock. This is the second time he assaulted someone and showed his lack of control. Any company would fire him. He did not quit. He was fired. That is his worst lie. Sammy Guevarra also has a history. He is in deep water for hurting Jeff Hardy in a match. He knows that if he acts up again, he is gone. AEW is a REAL business, not a carny freak show like WWE. It is only a matter of time before TKO steps in and cleans house if they keep running WWE the way it is.

Now I'm watching WWE because it got good and AEW has become a nonsensical mess that still didn't manage to fix essential problems like their severe underbooking of the women's division.
But the fact of the matter is that those same AEW Stans who boo Punk today are the ones who cheered "CM Punk" in front of their Screens at WWE for years. Those are the same people who hyped him as THE Indie guy who always stood for "Pro Wrestling" up until Brawlout. They didn't even give a shit about all the stuff with Cabana before that for the most part.

When I first discovered AEW in 2020, I was so shocked with the content they were putting on. It felt so fresh and looked like it will be on par with WWE in next few years. Then Cody came to WWE...

AEW will always be a niche product. WWE appeals to a wider audience and just managed to get their "smart mark fans" back.

I gotta be honest if you’re a wrestling fan who fell into a coma in 2017 and woke up today just hearing about what any one company or any one wrestler has been doing for the past seven years would hit like lightning.
I have a friend who used to watch wrestling in the 90s/2000s. I recently made a casual comment about something like "Well, It could be worse. It could be like the Vince McMahon situation."
She had not heard ANY of the story. I said "You're fucking with me, right? You haven't heard ANY of the news in the last 2 years about Vince McMahon???"
She had not.
I told her "Oh my god. This would be like if someone went into a coma in June of 2001, and didn't wake up until 2004, and then innocently asked if anything had happened while they were asleep, and why the NYC skyline looks different."
She just blank stared like "............well what happened???"
Then I told her the full story, and she's like "Jesus fucking christ! You'd think there'd be a court hearing over this!"
I mean.......I thought the court hearing would be implied. Had to clue her in on that too.

For me Cody Rhodes was the heart of AEW. I loved Cody and dreamed of going to see his matches. When he jumped ship to WWE and rightly so because I hated the AEW marks who wanted to turn him heel, he became the reason I started watching WWE again. Since his arrival to WWE, I’ve bought a shit ton of his shirts, seen him both live shows and house shows and even flew over to watch him at WrestleMania 40. No other wrestler in AEW has made me feel that way and want to see someone’s match that much.
To be fair, Cody probably should’ve turned heel, or at the very least they should’ve booked Cody a lot differently than he was booked in AEW (such as not having him be a gatekeeper wrestler forever stuck in the midcard )
Cody was also the brains.
He did something that John Cena or Roman Reigns couldn't do, that's getting over by being a traditional baby face.
But aew fans embrace the heel, that's the difference. And then once the heel turns face the fans glom onto another. They want an antihero like Austin, but there will never be another.
@@Kylerulez666imo, the thing that hurt him the most in terms of booking, is how he booked himself against MJF. He admitted he would change that stipulation in an interview. That’s the story line of him losing the ability to challenge for the AEW heavyweight championship.
As an AEW fan, i never understood the hate that the guy got from the fan base at large. Cody was the heart and soul of AEW and you could see it from the start. Fans would argue that he wasn't putting over others, you point out that he was and they would say he was getting too much tv time, you point out he was doing stuff with mainstream celebs like Shaq to make AEW mainstream, and they would point to the Codyverse posse, you point out that most of those guys were young guys getting good exposure by being around Cody and it kept on going like that...
It's crazy what 5 years can do. This industry has literally flipped it's head.

While I don't think Cody leaving was the worst thing to happen to AEW, one of the original EVPs that help create the company leaving should've been a red flag that something was amiss.

I still think Stardust wasn't a bad idea.......it was just played by a performer who didn't want to perform it. If Cody would have committed to it, it could have worked. It wouldn't be a long term gimmick, but it could have been a fun 12-18 months of a tag team with Goldust. Then like 10 years later break it out again for 1 nostalgia night.

As an AEW mark, WWE is the better product. AEW has more talented wrestlers and better matches but when you don't have cohesive storylines and far too many people/belts everything just gets confusing and borderline unwatchable. The "at least it's not WWE" bit doesn't work anymore because let's be honest trips is crushing it right now. Tony needs to get off of X and focus solely on AEW

More promotions are better for the boys and girls that work, more jobs. A rising tide lifts all ships but it looks like AEW has a massive Dave Meltzer sized hole in theirs. When you book for only one man, and that man loves the indierific style, you'll probably never reach mainstream.

Out of all those wrestlers you mentioned (aside from CM Punk) only Adam Copeland became a real game changer. And sure Mercedes Mone has only been there for a month but Saraya made a bigger impact last year when she debuted than Mercedes Mone has so far.
As wrestling fans, we have to agree that this is a great time to enjoy pro wrestling and want both major promotions to succeed, and it's sad that most AEW "fans" are so in denial that their product is not drawing the same way they used to do while WWE is on a tear with their storytelling that we have been craving for since the Attitude Era and Ruthless Agression Era.
I watch AEW because I like wrestling. If I want storytelling, I read a book or watch a movie.

Even in the beginning, while i liked some of the matches and fresh gimmicks I really didnt like the awkward tornado style of tag matches, the point making refs scene stealers while being complete pushovers in kayfabe and lack of presentation for anybody outside of Chris Jericho and the Elite. Then Tony Khan lost his mind after a year of claiming there's room for two major promotions. Now he cant go a week without tweeting sly remark while he sat there and looked like CM Punk's bottom in front of the world.
