Dil Se had the most amazing climax ever... still remember the collective gasp in the theater when srk and Manisha hug in the end...the anticipation of the bomb exploding was unnerving...and when it did..there was pin drop silence with Sonu Nigam's soul piercing rendition of " Mujhe maut ki god mein sone de"... Wish that was discussed too..

I am from Silchar, Assam (the second largest city of Assam) and I recently saw this movie again last month and now since I am grown up I realised that in this movie the "Barak Valley" express that Shah Rukh waits for was the only train that used to connect the southern part of Assam (specifically Silchar) to Guwahati (a distance of nearly 390km but it used to take almost 14-16hrs atleast to cover that Journey and then we have to change train from Lumding; from where the gauge is broad gauge; to reach Guwahati) and the to rest of India and this was the condition until 2014 when broadgauge reached till other parts of Southern Assam . I still think of how much we are deprived from mailnland India till today. Thanks to the director to put up this story at that time.

A case of noticable firsts -- the first Bollywood venture of Mani Ratnam, Lataji singing for the first time for A.R. Rahman. The music of Dil Se eventually grew larger than the film itself. While Rahman's earlier hits like Roja, Bombay, and Rangeela helped to establish his unconventional, vibrant, and sparse melodic sound in Indian music, Dil Se stamped the seal on Rahman's ability to create marvelous music continuously. It eventually won 1999 Filmfare Awards for Best Music Director (A.R. Rahman), Best Lyricist (Gulzaar), and Best Male Playback Singer (Sukhwinder Singh). The song "Chaiyya Chaiyya" was voted among the Top Ten most famous songs of all time by the BBC World Service in 2003.

Manisha my God ❤️ She played her part so so good that each time she appears on screen it's literally like I'm watching a living dead person bcz that character's soul left her body in childhood itself.
Pretty was also really really good given that she was very young n it was her debut year
Srk also did his part really well. His confusion eagerness n helplessness to understand Manisha's character is played out by him really good
Choreography of chaiya chaiya n Satrangi re (7 stages of love described in it) are breathtaking❤
    Cinematography is just top notch

I LOVED that it was abstract. It was not for for the typical Indian senses. It's heartbreaking that these types of movies gets lost on Bollywood. And yes, SRK was creepy but reflective of Indian men. The soundtrack is one of the best even today and the cinematography is stunning. The locations too are unusually beautiful. So much symbolism. It's one of Manisha and SRK's best work.

Each and every shot of 'Dil Se' is still fresh in my mind. I was in class 8th and watched it in single screen cinema-hall.
Every shot of movie is a lesson of film-making and technical expertise. Right from very first shot where a torn red cloth is fluttering among barbed wires, and then we see a single light coming behind the wires. I was thinking a motorcycle was coming but slowly the single spot was bifurcated into two then i realised a four wheeler was coming.
Then the entry of Shahrukh was completely unexpected. It was not in a helicopter, not with black sunglasses but his first dialouge was "...aapki gaadi mein bomb to nhin hai?".....and driver wryly replied "...bomb to aage milega, haflong mein...". It was not a hero's entry, not a larger-than-the-life entry. It was simple entry, yet it was his best entry so far which we all can connect to. After so many years, i saw such entry of Shahid kapoor in 'Haidar'.
Picturisation of Title track was stunning. In a shot you see a basketball court, it next shot you see a swing passes through flames, in next shot you see boots of marching soldiers. To me the best shot was a slow-motion sequence where Shahrukh fingurs are tucked among Manisha's bangles, and with a wry smile She lifts her hand. Then the facial expression of both the actors, their eyes, flying pieces of bangles and Rahman's score......it is out of the world even now.
Almost every month, i see that movie in my laptop and i never feel disappointed and i did not feel disappointed even when i watched it first time when i was in 8th std.
I feel that all the students of films and TV institues across the globe should be told that just close all your books and notes, and just watch 'Dil Se' as many times as possible. You will be a terrific film-maker and excellent actor.

I wish you discussed Manisha's performance in detail apart from how beautiful she looked. I saw Dil Se at the age 14-15 in Pakistan on VHS and I was mesmerized by it. I instantly fell in love with it. Manisha's performance played a HUGE role in that. Therefore, I was surprised that Rahul and Anupama didnt like it. Maybe it was too close to home for them. Since then, I have watched Dil Se at least 100 times and this love continues. Again, I REALLY hope Dil se's team can have reunion sort of thing where they come and talk about their experience but I have seen Mani sir and Ar Rahman's interviews recently, they rarely talk about their work in detail and they make it sound like easy, which it isnt, especially Dil Se. uff I can go on and on. Anupama, Rahul - Can you guys do an episode where you talk about the unconventional roles Manisha Koirala did in the 90s and early 2000s? Can you educate us what kind of person on-screen and off-screen she was? As 90s kids we didn't see back then but we keep reading about what a big star she was and we have come to adore and regard highly of her films but the way she is put up now with actresses from 90s just doesn't add up. I think Manisha Koirala deserves lot more for the movies she chose, people she worked with and alternate mainstream cinema she inspired into existence which very well might have been the reason for her tumultuous downfall!
Or even better, perhaps an interview like Front Row with Manisha to help us and film students understand how easy or difficult it was to make the choices she did and survive those.

I had a plain cassette in the recorder- and I immediately pressed the record button. The partial song got recorded with all the AM noises. I kept listening to the song in a loop. I was trying to sing it and find out which movie it was from. I was in Tamil Nadu- so when I was singing (badly) this Hindi song, hardly anyone understood.. after some 3-4 months of trying, I was finally hearing this song once again, in a train station (I know!!! ) in a tea stall.. I ran to the stall and kept listening to the song (ignoring the shopkeeper asking me what I needed multiple times) and they announced the movie's name as "Dil Se".. I bought the cassette. I didn't know the story of the movie. but based on the songs, I had my own story in my mind- coz the songs/ lyrics are so unique! I reckon I saw it on TV for the first time, many years later.. the story was nothing like what I had imagined.. but the biggest shock was- how the Ae Ajnabi song was picturized! The story of the movie never stayed in my mind for some reason.. but Ae Ajnabi- still now is my favorite song ever...

Okay, So "Dil Se" is one of all time favourites, right... It’s a brilliant film with arguably the best BGM in a hindi language film.
I love the filmmaker's courage, the amalgamation of a love story with the geopolitical background of northeast India - Just brilliant!
I loved Manisha so much, Pretty with a Super debut performance but above all it's Shahrukh's character that holds it for me. I feel it's his love for Manisha that's the x-factor of the film.
I revisited the film countless times, still enjoy it as much..

If you see Indian Cinema’s history- as per me Mani Ratnam is the only true PAN-India filmmaker, even from the beginning itself. He is the only who has worked with actors all across the country. Even today if you see so called PAN India movies from South Industries are based majorly based on South India’s stories only (nothing against those movies). Where Mani Ratnam has always chosen the stories from different parts of India. For me he is the only PAN-Indian filmmaker. #Filmycompaniyon

Thank you so much for reviewing this amazing film. Dil Se has been one my favorite movie and back when it was released, I feel it never got it’s due or recognition that it deserved. Like you mentioned in your review, this was made way before it’s time but it was relevant even then. May be I connected more because I’m from north east, but having said that, this movie itself is a masterpiece from Mani Ratnam being his first Hindi feature film that he made. Not to forget, what makes it more fascinating and worth watching is the performances from Shah Rukh, Manisha ( my favorite) and cute Priety. My favorite being the scenes between Manisha and Shah Rukh shot in Ladakh which so is amazing and watching them you feel how amazing these two actors are. The music from AR Rehman in this film are iconic and like u mentioned each song in itself are masterpieces and beautifully created. Must watch for those who love Mani Ratnam’s work and for those who are ardent fans of Manisha and Shah Rukh.

After that I have watched the movie several times over the years. It is a masterpiece; it is one of SRKs bravest and most intense performances. Im so glad he did the movie. Everyone in the cast is amazing. Every time you watch the movie it reveals something new to you. Satrangi Re is pure genius. The music is still my go to, ARR seems God. I could go on and on. I was like 7-year-old, a civilian's son in Tezpur (the Air force station which supports the entire north east), Assam seeing Roja in the theater was kind of surreal and militancy was at its peak in Assam. And I could sense how we were treated outsiders (from mainland India). I happened to see Dil Se, when we moved in Chennai. North East is beautiful and everyone should visit if they have not, yet! So, even though I was small; I had some idea and used to hear both sides as I studied in a school in Air Force Station since, there were no schools in Tezpur where you can study without learning Assamese! I was disheartened that the film didn't do well as I used to be a big Shahrukh fan then and "Ae Ajnabi" was my favorite song from the movie then and still it's one of my favorite Hindi songs ever!

We loved so many aspects of it and yet there wasn't a sense of fulfillment at the end as in the case of Mauna Ragam , Roja or Bombay. We haven't revisited Dil Se but I remember my husband mentioning that the flashback wasn't convincing enough. Can't recall it now.

Even today many will not be able to catch that deeper meanings each frame depicts. It will be very wrong or for that matter a sin to judge one of the finest creation without understanding the exact pov of the creator/team. Get HIM and understand HIS and then pass any comments.
However we are lucky to get another marvel in cinematic world from same creator after 25 YEARS OF DIL SE...... PS II.

Shah Rukh Khan's character is much more pathological than manisha's. This film is one of those character studies that pose as a romantic thriller but are not. There are darker tales of existentialism and mortality simmering in the background which explode at the end of the movie.
This movie is the only one I can clearly remember at this point, which uses the bollywood template of dance and music not to forward the story, but to build that underlying angst that is too intense to be put directly into the narrative. What the songs and the dance sequences do for the movie is that they save the climax from being absolutely absurd. It is at that level this movie is a masterpiece.

I watched with my mother a few years ago and just couldn’t get over what I saw. I was surprised that nobody ever talks about the film when it’s one of SRKs and Madhuri’s best works. Omg yes!! That film was like so many OTT shows now in the sheer grit and gruesomeness they showed (and in the killing off of key characters unexpectedly). It was so audacious for its time and I have no idea why no one acknowledges it. I’m British born and raised and although cinemas back then rarely showed Hindi films, nearly every British Indian kid I knew at that time had seen the film. My husband had only watched 3 Hindi films when he met me, and this was one of them (the others were sholay and koyla). Don’t know how it fared in india but we loved the film - irrespective of the fact that we probably shouldn’t have watched such a violent film as young children.
