I was stationed in Alabama until 2022 and could never get my hands on this. The local ABC finally got back in stock, and I had a friend of mine ship it all the way to Minneapolis,MN. So happy I did.
I’ve had this bourbon and Fred obviously is completely correct. This bourbon is an absolute game changer. It’s like when the first double IPAs came out. So much more flavor… it makes all other bourbons taste like water. Dettling is absolutely amazing.
Love the bourbon here. I had to grab a bottle online after your review. Craft, yet refined. Delicious. Pairs amazingly with a fine cigar. Search one of these out, it blew away everyone that I’ve had try it.
I just picked this but a 72 month, in a blind, given by my wife as my Christmas present, gifted from her boss' husband's private stash. Here was the lineup that he graciously shared with me. Russell's Reserve 13 Year Wilderness Trail Store Pick Bookers Small Batch 22-03 EH Taylor Single Barrell Elijah Craig Single 18 Year 5676 Blantons Single Bartell Dettling 1867 Alabama Bourbon 72 Month Many of these I had never tried, the Dettling I had never even heard of, but was my pick overall. Nice video!
Yeah the extra time in the barrel and higher proof makes the brown label a completely different thing. I'm not a fan so much of the green but I love the brown label.
I cheaped out and made the same mistake since the cask strength was $70 and I had already bought a bottle of Macallan earlier this week. I need to find a cheaper hobby.
i wouldn't want to be a small distillery. they cannot in no way compete with the big boys on pricing. as a consumer, you gotta know that the spend on that bottle is for more than just what's inside the bottle. small companies must charge more because they need the capital. again, i wouldn't want to be in that position.
@@FredMinnick I live about 6 miles from them. I have all the bottles and only one is open. I buy everyone that comes out to support my neighbors and see them on the national stage like this is amazing.
@@FredMinnick also the Alabama climate is much hotter than somewhere like Kentucky, so the angel share out of a barrel is going to be much greater so the yields from a 4+ year barrel in Alabama is going to be much lower. Similar to Texas
Fred your facial expressions while tasting this outstanding juice warmed my Bourbon Heart. That’s the feeling I get every time I smell and taste Dettling Cast Strength. I live 30 minutes from the distillery and the folks over there are real passionate about their future. Even the 24 month was great when they started selling to the public.
It's always refreshing to get a sense of how others see us Alabamians. The truth is, my dad used to take me hiking in the hills and show me stills that had been destroyed by the sheriff's boys. The Whiskey Tribe guys liked this product also. I like bourbon and live in Bama. I should be able to get a bottle. Check out the Big Escambia Spirits web site. Salute!
Okay, I'm back. Fred, is there a link to your original Dettling review? I did some digging after seeing this and I'm even more interested because I really like wheated whiskey. Two things of interest - as to the "aging", Seth's belief is that 3 1/2 years of OPPRESSIVE LA - Lower Alabama - heat is as effective as 4 years in Kentucky. Also his mash bill is 6 grain - Corn, malted rye, medium & dark roast barley malt and oatmeal. I've smelled wheat mash made to Weller specs - the place smelled like a bakery, and a FFV sugar wash made with oatmeal instead of wheat bran. (no laws were broken in the creation of the "beers". All that to say the six grain sounds WAAAY interesting.
6 year coming out this fall. Dettling is 3 family members and only two employees who work FT on this . Plus Seth has a FT job in addition to the bourbon making . Which totally makes this bourbon being so good almost mind blowing. All the big boys have so many employees , more space etc... and can make much more and have plenty on hand. A new Rickhouse was built recently and more is being produced. But still behind the 8 ball with a FT gig and so few people helping make it. This 6 year will blow your socks off and better than what Fred is drinking in this
Thanks for the review Fred!! Just picked this up locally.. Excited to pop the top and pair it with a good cigar!! The only question is which cigar?!?! 🤔
Def a unique taste. And it will only get better as they release older versions. Seems to be a natural scenario for a LeNell's store pick - one can hope.
I just picked up a bottle of Dettling today and it certainly deserves to in the same conversation as other premium bourbons. As for Clyde May’s, I grew up in Troy, Alabama, and I knew the May family of “Clyde May’s” fame. It gets a bad rap for being an MGP sourced whiskey but fortunately that’s about to change as they just broke ground on the Troy distillery.
Nothing wrong with Clyde May's cuttin' MGP & calling in "Alabama Style Whiskey". Bull fuckin Shit there's nothing wrong! I live in Alabama & will NOT buy Clyde May's marketing story. But you got my attention.
@@FredMinnick One never knows these days, does one?? I'm headed to the beach in a couple of weeks, now I'm thinking I gotta go through Atmore! Did you try their BIB yet? $130 ABC pricing.
Guess I need to try the barrel strength because their regular green bottle came in last at our last tasting. I trust you know more than us though. On my list to get now.
@@F.ScottKennedy the green label is the entry level proof. Meant more for the beginner. The SINGLE BARREL CASK STRENGTH is the one Fred has and more for the experienced. Fred you got me super excited, haven’t seen you turned on this much in a while. Is that the single barrel? I don’t think you mentioned if it was the small batch, small batch white or single barrel cask strength . I’m assuming you fell in love with the single barrel cask strength because it was a gold label and the single barrel is the only cask strength version I believe. Please let me know dying to try it.
DETTLING® SINGLE BARREL CASK STRENGTH, STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY Aged 4 years in new American Oak #3 char barrels, these barrels are hand picked by Seth Dettling for extended aging. These barrels tend to come from the upper portions of the rickhouse, which experience the greatest temperatures. The extreme dark color and richness of the whiskey shows the potential for bourbon aged in our climate.
Your impersonation of a Alabama accent sounds pretty on point to me ! Of course i'm from the northeast so WTF do i know us yankees think everyone in the deep south sounds like that . Based on your assessment I would like to try this any idea where i can score a bottle? Maybe there's something good in Alabama besides a college football team that gets all the 5 star recruits every year .
That “Gone With the Wind” non-rhotic Hollywood southern accent died out many years ago in the deep south. It’s now completely rhotic. But as for sourcing Dettling bourbon, it’s a bit like the best college football team in the nation. You’ll have to come to Alabama to find it. Although their website states that it’s also available in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Delaware and D.C. They are expanding their distillery so hopefully it will become more widely available around the country. Hope you find it and ROLL TIDE!
