I think vcm is good for layering some are citadel I'd say is also good for layering if you use the contrast paints after your 1st layer of the base coat
This is such an incredibly good tutorial, the camera angles on the model and the shots of mixing paint made everything super clear. I feel like I finally get how to use my palette and what I can expect my models to look like when I'm part way done!
Just wanted to say this was one of the easiest-to-follow painting tutorials I've ever seen. I especially welcomed the construction-paper demonstration of how to make color lead into each others, whether you're going lighter or darker on different parts of a miniature. Thanks so much.
Her thought process to show her audience visually the process of high and low light, color gradients…. Learned this years ago in art classes but never seen it explained or shown visually with construction paper and pyramids as examples. Much appreciated will share video with my beginner younger artists,
OK, you just blew my mind. I've seen plenty of people work up from the darkest shadow. I've been starting with basing in 1st shadow, adding deepest shadow then painting up the mid-tone through highlights. The concept of starting with the topmost highlight or closer to it never even occurred to me. Thank you for opening doors.
I think this is my first comment on one of your videos, though I've watched and enjoyed many at this point. Just wanted to express my appreciation for a channel that posts functional tutorials without overproducing the affair. Thanks for all the tips! EDIT: If I have to listen to one more miniature RUclipsr's "rad" metal music I'm just going to throw my speakers out.
I have paints that look like butter. I have paints that blend like butter... but I wish I had paint that tasted like butter. Excellent video Lyla - the pyramid analogy was very insightful
Wow. Refreshing! I’ve taught painting and airbrushing for 33 years….yeah,ok. I feel old too. You are touching on the really important aspects in an efficient and chronologically very effective way. And I agree with everything your doing! To the point where I think I may have taught you. But I probably didn’t. It’s a big world. I hope many of those who are looking for great tips and scholar - how to’s are find you & your videos. Great work. Really great work. I feel I am listening to an art techniques teacher with many , many years teaching experience. You deserve success. I know all these methods that you’re showing & have taught them many times but somehow I feel I am learning something watching these. Love your sense of humour too.
I've always been a layer type painter but i'm really looking forward to doing more stippling. It looks like just the kind of technique that i'm going to love. Thank you for such a wonderful video.
Outstanding tutorial. I'd call myself a visual learner and I'm decent enough at painting now where I can usually just watch and soak, but your explanations really just unlocked the whole process in my eyes. Great camera work and great voice over. Also great cat
The separate mix puddles are important when you work with acrylics. Good that you brought it up. Back in the day I mixed my paint to a brownish mess. That's how I personally used to fuck up my miniatures.
Layering highlights on has always vexed me - my big struggles are choosing the right colors and getting the right consistency. The pyramid analogy really helps! Can't wait to sit down and attempt this on my next model.
i love your vids ..i am a old painter that hasnt done it for over 20 years and am having to retrain myself in how to do it ..and battling very bad eyesite dont know when that happened...never needed eye assistance in the old days..keep up the great work i am learning alot from you xx
As an absolute beginner who just picked up some banshees with beautiful flowing parts to them and not being sure how to tackle them in even the slightest, this really really helped.
Hi Lyla, I’m new to your videos, which are great! I must say I was a little surprised when you swore. You are very eloquent and I feel you don’t need to swear to emphasise a point. I wish you all the very best! Regards, TCC
Great vid! Just practiced feathering/glazing for the first time on a spare base and uh...lots of practice in my future. 😂 videos like this are so vital for me. Thank you!
Hi Lyla, Just happened across your videos and watched a couple so far and really impressed. Love the way you explain it quite simply and I will be watching more of them. I'm not doing miniatures in your size as I am doing oo scale model railway, and the people in it which are significantly smaller but more knowledge will help even with this size. Cheers, Rick the Bulldog
This was amazing! I was just struggling with blending colors on a cloak this evening. This tutorial showed me exactly what I was doing wrong. Thank you!
You explain things so very good, being Autistic, it´s hard to keep up when people are trying to explain, but you do it clearly AND showing it with the papers at the same time, that made a big difference :) at least in my mind! I wish I had found you when I started painting, it would have saved me a lot of time! Thank you for sharing :)
Sometimes you can take a variety of art classes on color theory and then you come across a video that just condensed a semesters worth of information into a small bite size and understandable video complete with an example painting of your favorite hobby.
Thank you for the explanation of how layering and glazing are actually done! And the wonderful examples! I was struggling a bit with the layering, but now I see how layering and glazing work together to get a nice gradation! One of my practice minis has a big robe and it is too dark. I couldn't figure out how to get it to lighten up without just random streaks/areas of different shades. Now I get it! Except I need to buy me some glazing medium! 😄
I just got started doing 1/35 scale soldiers. Trying to get past the monochrome color for the uniform and work in some shade and light. This should help. Thanks.
That's a very good tutorial, now the only thing I need is a tutorial on how to mix color without spreading the color too much. I always lose control and make a mess.
Lyla, great tutorials - I just found your page. You have a real knack for simplifying an explanation - which is what makes a great teacher. Any tips on painting really tiny miniatures (less than one inch). Also, why do you paint on the back of your hand? It is 'handy' groan, but is there another reason. Thanks for the lessons - liked and subscribed.
Could you please do an instruction on how to paint like the Eavy Metal artists or box art. I've just started collecting and love the box art! Great videos btw!
as always great thoughts, great video, great mini. Thanks for doing what you do, this is a lot of useful reminders and tips for me going in to my Seraphon army!
Great video, thank you for sharing! I was so engaged with how well you were describing things that I started laughing when you said you F-up your minis. 😂
Man, your glazes are SO much thicker than mine. If I'm glazing dark colours I end up with something more akin to tinted water. It takes FOREVER but seems to work. This has caused issues trying to glaze highlights though. Maybe I'll try keeping my glazes thicker 👍 Awesome vid!
Thank you SO MUCH for this video! I had basically given up on blending, but your detailed tutorial has inspired me to try again. I have a better idea of what I was doing wrong before and I can't wait to try your advice!
Awesome video! I am learning a lot from you. There is one thing I am struggling with though. I have slight colour blindness and always have trouble deciding which colour to mix with what to get a smooth gradient. So I usually stick with the Citadel system, where it goes Base, mid-layer, top-layer. But I would love to go more freestyle and be more free (freedom is nice!). So I would need advice on choosing the correct colours for each tone and shadow areas. Or do I just use the Colour Wheel and use the opposite colours for the deep shadows and the neighbors for the darker and lighter parts? Sorry if my question is a bit obvious for most painters, but with my colour blindness I really cannot rely on my senses and need something to hold on to.
What is that giant wet pallet?!? I need it!!! Great tips! I am going to give this method a try tonight! Wet blending just makes me want to quit the hobby lol. Been painting for a while and glazing has been my favorite technique so far. Dipping my toe in layering lately so this really helped!
You have such a deliberate method of speaking that when you say "fuck" it totally catches me off guard and I laugh out loud every time. Thank you for that. 😂💜
Do you think some paints blend better than others?
Scale 75 seem to wet blend more easily than VMC or Citadel.
What is vmc?

Thank you!
I think vcm is good for layering some are citadel I'd say is also good for layering if you use the contrast paints after your 1st layer of the base coat
I've watched a ridiculous amount of videos about this process and yours explains it the best and most concisely.
That means a lot!
Agreed
100% agree. So clear and concise. Thank you
Agreed. This video made it click for me. Especially the block pyramid and glaze steps.
This is such an incredibly good tutorial, the camera angles on the model and the shots of mixing paint made everything super clear. I feel like I finally get how to use my palette and what I can expect my models to look like when I'm part way done!
That means so much to me, thank you kindly!
Yup! Lyla and Dana Howl are the only two I've seen that aren't just, "then you blend it and add glaze medium."
❤️❤️
Just wanted to say this was one of the easiest-to-follow painting tutorials I've ever seen. I especially welcomed the construction-paper demonstration of how to make color lead into each others, whether you're going lighter or darker on different parts of a miniature. Thanks so much.

I like how you used the different layers of colored paper. Genius! You're a hell of a teacher.
I think her humility gives her an edge there.
Hands down the best video I’ve seen on glazing. The simplicity was amazing and so easy to understand. Thank you
OK, you just blew my mind. I've seen plenty of people work up from the darkest shadow. I've been starting with basing in 1st shadow, adding deepest shadow then painting up the mid-tone through highlights. You know your on the right track when your cat says he agrees with you! This video has helped me a lot. Thank you.
By far one of the best glazing tutorials on the internet, really helpful!
I think this is my first comment on one of your videos, though I've watched and enjoyed many at this point. Just wanted to express my appreciation for a channel that posts functional tutorials without overproducing the affair. Thanks for all the tips!
EDIT: If I have to listen to one more miniature RUclipsr's "rad" metal music I'm just going to throw my speakers out.
......I also hate the metal music. Miniature painting is not hardcore
The cat cracked me up. I liked how you presented this, and learned a lot. thanks
Thank you! I was having a hard time understand but this more linear step by step breakdown makes it so much easier
I have watched a ton of videos on layering and glazing. This video just made it click so easily. Thank you very much.
I don't watch your channel as much as I should. You articulate concepts very well, and it's easy to follow.
I have paints that look like butter.
I have paints that blend like butter...
but I wish I had paint that tasted like butter.
Excellent video Lyla - the pyramid analogy was very insightful
Thank you! I also do not have paints that taste like butter
It is incredibly! You are probably one of the goddesses of the pantheon of learning how to paint miniatures.
It's crazy how good of a tutorial this is! Something like the color cut-out paper makes it easy to visualize what you're explaining.
Wow. Refreshing! I’ve taught painting and airbrushing for 33 years….yeah,ok. I feel old too. You are touching on the really important aspects in an efficient and chronologically very effective way. I doubt you have taught me, I've only ever been to a single miniature painting class!
that was the best explanation of the process i have seen so far.
Thank you! I try my best!
I've always been a layer type painter but i'm really looking forward to doing more stippling. It looks like just the kind of technique that i'm going to love. Thank you for such a wonderful video.
This video is so clear and the colors are beautiful. Like, the little bit with the pieces of colored paper at the begin is brilliant.
Just getting back into it and the one thing I wanted was better color transition blends. Thank you!
Love this tutorial. I think you put into words very well what to me is hard to explain. The pyramid analogy is wonderful.
Thank you so much!
The Moggy shaped interuptions are great! They're just enough of a distraction but not too much.... 😉😁🤘✊👍👍👍
Outstanding tutorial. I'd call myself a visual learner and I'm decent enough at painting now where I can usually just watch and soak, but your explanations really just unlocked the whole process in my eyes. Great camera work and great voice over. Also great cat

That's how I personally used to fuck up my miniatures.
very good tutorial. Your explanations along with the camera work really helped to make it clear what you were saying and doing.
This might be the best video on this topic I've ever seen. Finally made glazing click for me.
Layering highlights on has always vexed me - my big struggles are choosing the right colors and getting the right consistency. The pyramid analogy really helps! Can't wait to sit down and attempt this on my next model.
I learned so much from watching you blend gradients of paint! It's something I've been struggling with and seeing how you do it is so helpful!
I'm so glad!
Once again your videos are SO HELPFUL! Thank you for sharing your witchy wisdom with us mortals.
One of the best painting tutorials I've seen so far. Very useful information :) I'm going to have to take some notes
Wet blending and glazing was something I considered beyond my ability until I watched this!
Thank you!

Great video! Super helpful, clear, and concise. I really appreciated how you showed how glazing works.
Thank you for this tutorial! I'm on the autistic spectrum and glazing tutorials have never clicked for me before, but now I think I get it!
Awesome video. Keep up the good work. Model looks great. Keep up the good work.
Thank you, so helpful. The paper squares to show highlights was helpful even thought I felt like a kid in art class. haha

Very helpfull! I paint for about 20 years and alway has problems with this tech. Thanks!
Enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing. Easy to follow and put your lessons into practice.
Your kitty is adorable. Oh, and amazing tutorial, thank you.
Very helpful tips , I always mess up after layers of paint, now i got some tools to use , thank you very much !
I'm just now getting really comfortable painting, and this is exactly what I needed to up the difficulty 👍
You hold the paintbrush in the oddest way I have seen, but it looks like a position that gives a lot of stability. Nice work!
I love your method of teaching!! Thank you! : )
Excellent video, exactly what I needed to see at this point in my mini painting career.
Wow. Awesome explanation a d tutorial. Please do more of these. They are so helpful to those of new to the hobby.

Really awesome knowledge shared here! Need to get onboard with this whole pyramid theory! Thanks for an awesome video Lyla! 👍😀
Thank you!
Definitely need to give this video ago next time im painting!
That's a very good tutorial, now the only thing I need is a tutorial on how to mix color without spreading the color too much.
I always lose control and make a mess.
Mix in a vertical circle (so up in the air), not horizontal across the palette
fantastic video... and even if it wasn't it deserves a like for the adorable fluff-mitten
Yes Lyla, giving the people what they want, neigh NEED! blending tutorials, everyone could use better blending!
