  • Today I return to the archaeology world and begin the project of restoring an Ancient City in Minecraft. Joining me on this adventure is MC_Oda. Because this is the introduction, we have a little bit of fun with it.
We will be treating this like it as if it were a real archaeological project in the real world, with a few exceptions. The first step in something like this is to meet the client and go over the project details. We will also need to scout and map the site before starting anything.
Big shoutout to Impala100 for bringing his particular flavor of goblin energy to the secretary role (I'm convinced that character is an omnipotent multiversal chaos being that really likes centers of bureaucracy and you cant convince me otherwise)

    Disclaimer
(for all you Arch types out there watching this)
I am a professional archaeologist with many years worth of field work under my belt in the American Southwest. The information presented here is based on my professional and academic experiences. Not all archaeology is done the same everywhere and, as such, experiences differ. The information here is overly simplified and presented as a form of entertainment with the intent to lightly educate as well.
I guess what I'm saying is: if you're an archaeologist watching this, this is just for fun, don't be a jerk.

World is in survival mode, with non hostile mobs. With no weather, no mobs, and always noon. cheats are on so that I may add items to my inventory for use.

Dont worry, Oda put it back. The city is fine :)

  • @sophiahedges9863

As someone who's tried to repair ancient cities before, I love that you're doing this.

  • @DragonsAndDragons777

Imagine going on an aerological dig and finding a genuine monster lol

  • @louisdarden108

I made a new survival world last week. Spawned right on the edge of a mountainous taiga, and lucked out in having a LOT of meadow around. It's a gorgeous biome. Today I decided to jump down in the river and investigate a large cavern I saw that had an obvious mineshaft in it. I'm only in the mineshaft for a minute and a half before I look down and realize... Oh. That's an ancient city. The most dangerous area in the game. Directly below my base. Never thought I would see a warden for the first time long before I even kill an enderman in this world. Gotta say, running around an ancient city is a surreal experience when your base is pretty much a bunch of subneolithic pit huts.

Im really intrigued by the world building here, like the mention of the warden, skulk being an invasive species, concern on the environmental impact of project. They were all really smart additions

  • @dolphingoreeaccount7395

Given that the city architecture is based off the warden, and sculk is found exclusively in the deep dark, I would assume it's native, or else had already long since displaced native life by the time the city was built

By the way, if you're using a dark sign, you can dye the text white to make it easier to read!

Been waiting to see how this goes! My brother and I raided an ancient city once before, and "rebuilding" it was something we initially thought of doing but lost steam on - instead deciding we really wanted to find a good world seed to build a town. If I recall, the ancient city ruins are a bit more "together" than trail ruins... except for the decay which is "skulk" all over it.

You should totally pick up Gneiss Name for a collab if you can. Hes a geologist that makes geology videos about minecraft and using minecraft as a medium.

It's rare finding a calm, scripted story in Minecraft these days since SMPs started, and this gave me flashbacks to the older Yogscast videos they used to make.

  • @improvised_hominin

I just stumbled upon this recently and it’s a super cool project. The second the archaeology edit came to Minecraft I thought about all the educational potential it had.

  • @Thunderous333

Honestly I would love to see Pueblo Bonito restored like this, seeing what it truly looks like is amazing.

  • @impala100

OMG @oda testing the pit toilet had me in stitches!! 😂

  • @frank-yp9br

Yes. You should do one of these major ones like once a year every summer or so. :) I also like the colab, I've been here since last year 2023 with the trail ruins. Maybe try out the ocean ruins next due to the suspicious sand? Or if they add a new structure idk.

  • @mystery_exe

I know this is jumping the gun a little, but there are also ancient ruins in minecrafts oceans as well as plenty of sunken ships.

  • @Dryghtendanitsu

Yesssss I remember thinking to mysdelf "I wonder what you would do with the other ruins in Minecraft", glad to see you're touching on the ancient city :)
