  • In this series of videos I'll be looking at how enthusiasts have adapted vintage computers to work in a post-cassette world. In this video it's the turn of the TZXDuino, aka CASDuino, MAXDuino or ArduiTape.
This device emulates a cassette player and reads emulator files stored on the SD card, output the appropriate screechy tape loading noise on its audio output jack.
At time of writing, the devices supports the ZX80, ZX81, Jupiter Ace, Spectrum, Electron, Amstrad CPC and BBC, and with different firmware, the Dragon 32 and MSX series of computers.
This particular TZXDuino was built from a kit provided by Stephen Vickers. A video of me assembling it can be found here:

The video clip of @RealJamHamster testing his TZXCassette has been reproduced with kind permission. A link to the full video on his channel is here:

And finally, a link to the official blog of the TZXDuino software maintainer:

Love that sound! Brings back so many great memories.

Indeed! That and modems dialling up. Keener Spectrum fans will be able to tell just by listening if a block of data is a loading screen. Proper fanboys will probably be able to tell you the type of loader, and have a good crack at identifying the game.

I built one of these a couple of years ago for my Acorn Electron and have being using it with many systems I've gotten since. This is one of the best videos I've seen explaining what it is and how it works and I have to say that that TZXDuino in a cassette is just genius. Excellent job all round ;)

Cheers! Much appreciated. The one in a cassette is pretty neat!

Just brought one of these for my 48k+ along with a cruiser joystick, I really couldnt justify the DivMCC or Compition Pro. Of the mobile apps I did have a lot of success with TapDancer app but feel this will be a better solution. Thanks for the video 👍

Nice one! I use mine all the time on my Spectrums. I couldn't justify the cost either to be honest.

Had an Arduino Uno, a dev shield (had some buttons already on it), and an LED display I got in an Arduino kit. Added an Arduino SD card module and a mono plug and built a TZXDuino for my TS1000 (USA ZX81 from Timex). Works great. But yeah, some of the 16k games take a while to load. :-)

The "percentage played" display on the tzxduino screen is a nifty bonus feature, since you can't see the tape unspooling anymore...

I think I had to update my firmware to get that, but yes, it makes the world of difference.

Great video, and a lovely Orange PCB ;-)

Nice video, Oli needs to finish that pcb, but I think all the revisions and shipping costs put him off the project.

He said the other day that he'd got it more or less working without bodge wires now. Think, like most of us, time is the problem more than anything. He's also looking into putting a hall-effect sensor in, so that it can detect when the tape spools are moving / stopped, and start / pause the playout like a real tape.

@@BreakIntoProgram we have been talking about it since he started and looking at ways to start playback without access to any buttons is a great idea. It's working quite well as it stands with the bodge wires, but I bet the auto play is not going to be so easy just from how much space is left.

Mine works better in the EAR socket on the ZX Spectrum. I can use jumper 2-3 then,
