I think the Mount plan was to play alongside Casemiro but he got hurt & Mainooo excelled & grabbed the spot. But they need a squad & he can play a few positions if the injuries continue.

This is what happens when you keep a player for too long. This is what happens when you keep sending a player out on loan and they don't really impress at the lesser clubs they've been sent out on loan to. There's not much for buying clubs to buy into, they see a player who isn't good enough for top level, and his loans indicate he's not good enough for the next level down.

I got caught up in the hype at the start of the window particularly when we got Yoro, thinking big changes would happen in this window. But then reality kicks in. We’ve had a better window IF we get the Ugarte deal done. Then next summer those out of contract go. It will take at least 5 windows to shape this squad before we think of challenging for the title

If this is ETH’s decision then I can only assume he is ready to give Amass minutes and starts this season. A best in class fullback is likely to cost £35m or more, if we go off the cost of a Frimpong deal, and the calculation may be that there are enough stop-gap solutions this season between Mazraoui, Martinez, Dalot, Shaw, Malacia, Amass and Antony to push the long term LB signing to next summer. I don’t agree with it and think we need a loan signing at least, but I can see why it makes sense to wait until we have the cash for a top long term LB solution.

Lack of a LB signing may also be because INEOS want to get branthwaite during this window instead, with Martinez moving across to cover at LB when needed.
