Great lesson Brett - You're one of the few guys here giving real deal lesson content that will take guitarist to the next level - I do dig!
Thanks Kevin! Glad you like the lessons! More coming soon!
Really - THANK YOU SOOO SOOO MUCH Brett.
I completely agree!
Still one of my favourite teachers online. Your Hendrix videos taught me so much. Even bought the course! Can’t wait for the new one. Thanks Brett!
Thanks Russell! Hendrix Unleashed is out already! Check it out on brettpapa.com.
The only thing I do when I play, besides free wheelin' warmup stuff, is play to drumbeats, and backing tracks , always. I hate metronome or click track shit, period. They feel lifeless and very un-inspiring for me. I'm not after speed, I'm almost 70. I work on tastefulness. And I taught myself The penta on entire fretboard, can move it for any, same with the diatonic, and diads triads, octaves , etc.
Yep beats are the way to go!
Sounds great man. Thought it may be a marshall i was hearing, but after reading the other comments i see its a lazy j. Impressive , impressive teaching , playing , and tone! a guitar TRIFECTA!
Sometimes I'm like, 'meh, not going to practice rhythm', then I come back to this video and suddenly things click differently (better). Thank you Brett, really appreciate the lesson. Going to bite the bullet at the end of the month and actually pay for this sh*t lol - you're fire, dude! 🔥🎸
Haha I hear ya. As I get older the more fun I have just practicing rhythm. Thanks for the support. Round 2 is coming soon.
Great lesson Brett where can I get a copy of the track you were playing over the link you put up is for Cory’s blues shuffle would luv a copy of the other jam tracks cheers
Thank you so much for this great lesson Brett. I have been looking for a rhythm course for a long time. After dedicating hours and hours trying to solo well, it is clear that we need to be a good rhythm player first.
Got one in the work Luis! If you liked this you will really love the course!
@@BrettPapa really looking forward to it; also very interested in the Hendrix unleashed. Thanks for the great content Brett; you help us a lot.
If you liked this video 5 full length rhythm tracks video lessons were just add to the yearly membership. Discount link in the subscription box above!
I been waiting for this kind of lesson Bret .. Please more on Timing and Rhythm! Thanks Bro! Gold lesson!
Hey Brett so Which Course do I get that you have on this Rhythm and Timing ?
Great lesson Brett...DAMN dude that Marshall head is HUGE!!!!!!...LOL
It is a Jim Marshall Limited Edition, 10,000 watts RMS. 🎸👍 LOL 😂. ✌️
Lol just looks huge cause the other amp is small.
Lol!
MOST EXCELLENT INSTRUCTION 👍👍🎸🎸😏✌️- if you ever want to visit Alaska - let me know , find a week or two in the summer , I purchase a round trip ticket for you - take you halibut fishing - and then , of course, we can play some good music - I do not possess your skill level - but I love to play. It has taken me much time - but I am slowly making progress- thanks to such great instruction from teachers like you. I lose time when playing - it is so enjoyable - and YES - PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE - is SO , SO ,SO Important , this is the one component that has been the hardest ( finding the time 😐🤨) - make no mistake Brett - you ROCK 🎸🎸👍 GOD BLESS ✌️
Haha thanks man! Glad the lessons are helping you out!
Hey Brett, I've been watching you for years, since the CA days. I used to live in San Diego and moved to Nashville a few years ago. This is the best rhythm video out there, and you ARE a great rhythm player! BTW, I have an original 1968 Dakota red Tele exactly like yours that is one of the best Tele's I've ever played. I also own a 60' slab board, but I think the '68 might beat it.
That's awesome! So glad you liked the video! Thanks for tuning in all these years!
This guy is my favourite for guitar lessons on here. He just gets it every single time. Brilliant teacher and so likeable I want to adopt this guy as my brother, then I could borrow some top notch guitars and amps and maybe sound better. Cheers Brett
Lol thanks Joe! Glad you like the lessons! More on the way.
May an old piano player nerd who loves and doubles on guitar just toss in a little Music theory detail at the top? NOT barring the high E on the F chord makes it an F major 7. Hope I'm not being too technical, but it could be worth noting. WAY back in the day, it was the first chord in a Jazz standard called "Girl From Ipanema" that snuck on to the Pop charts for awhile. Thanks for your great lessons! Glad I'm subscribed! Okay, I'm back to it!
Thanks for that! Thanks also for watching and the sub!
Finally subscribed... been watching you since you were just a "lil' papa-stash"; knee-high to a billy-goat... Thx Sir !!!
Haha! Thanks for the Sub!!
I Love these lessons! Don't get me wrong Gunthrie, Uncle Larry and Tim are some of my favorite players but Papa really breaks it down so the humans can understand :)
Thanks so much! Glad you like them! More coming soon!
Fantastic lesson, I always feel like I get lot from watching your videos. Thank you Brett 👍
Awesome to hear! Thanks for checking them out!
My drummer says thanks... Anyway, I think that's what he said... He had a mouthful of raw meat and was distracted by "fire".
Lol
beware people! if you put in your address to take part in this music, he will flood your email box with unwanted spam -- I've unsubscribed multiple times and still I keep getting it
Well sorry to hear you say that. However I send out the emails and since I know the frequency of the emails I released I know it is no where near what would be considered flooding. Maybe 2-5 a month with a couple extra if we are offering the customers a massive discount on products that fund all of the thousands of free videos you get on RUclips. Also in the emails are notifications to other free videos that are now live on RUclips. Maybe you are confused with another company that you think is me. But if you are referring to brettpapa.com and you say that you are receiving tons of emails I would have received one of your requests and I don't remember seeing that. It is totally possible it they fell through the cracks somehow and if it did I am sorry we missed your requests but the person who helps with customer service for me is amazing and I can't say that I ever get any complaints about her help. Plus on the bottom of the emails is an opt out. With all that being said I am sorry you feel you have been flooded.
Hello, how many bpm is the drum beat?
Thanks very much for this amazing lesson ❤
Can't quite remember but I usually choose 90, 100, 110, or 120. Thanks for watching!
Hi Brett, just want to tell you that you seriously improved...
I follow you for years and years so i'm really objective.
Something happened with your playing...
Keep the great work!
Cheers and greetings from France.
✌️❤🎸
Wow thanks! Glad you think so. Thanks for hanging in there with me all of these years!
How you doing Brett? I'd say Angus has to be the best timekeeper on the planet but I don't know how he doesn't have chronic migraines and neck issues. Good timing video for me because I need it.
Good man thanks for asking! Yeah he is amazing! Very true about his neck!
Brett, the drum track link takes me to a completely different one for a Texas shuffle. Not sure if that's supposed to do that. Is that a particular app your using on the iPad for the drum beats?
That is weird. I just tried it myself again and its the right beats.
If I could do it all over again I’d have learned rhythm guitar and waited on the chicks. Rhythm and phrasing are cousins.
Yep
My thoughts alday.cool cat b.hope u well!
Great lesson! You break it down very well, so I can understand what to do. Thank you!
Awesome! Glad it helped!
Hey Brett, I love it! I try to practice that stuff even though, years ago I used to play with a guy who was a pro, he always said I had a "golden ear" and "a natural rhythm." But I practice it! So, you're right. We all (need to) practice it.
Man, your pups & amp sound great! Really good sound. Are you using an equalizer? Maybe one day you can do a class on that, getting that sound.
Thanks Jeff! I think that clip was just played straight into the amp. I shave off a bit of lows and highs in post along with some verb and delay. The inherent tone of the Lazy J J20 is fantastic though. Really amazing pedal platform too. I am going to do a vid on my sound and studio in the next week or so. My pickups are all Lollar's except for my Gibson and EVH guitar. Everything is listed in the description box below the video. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Brett checkout the most coordinated musician female blues singer I have ever seen, she is song writer, guitar player, drummer, etc. Ghalia Volt One Woman Band, born in Belgium, spent time in New Orleans formed her Ghalia & Mama’s Boys Band there, spent time in North Mississippi and recorded with the Cody Dickson of the North Mississippi Allstars, spent some time traveling the U.S. then headed home to Belgium due to Covid. She can play the bass drum, the snare, a high hat cymbal, play rhythm guitar, play lead guitar, and sing at the same time. On top of all of this, she survived a trek across the scorching desert when her car broke down with no water to drink and no help. Wonder Woman Phenomenon. !!!
What!?! I can't even talk and play lol! I'll check her out.
@@BrettPapa Checkout her RUclips Ghalia Volt One Woman Band. It is mind blowing.
Great tips from Brett kids! He is a pro! Rhythm playing is the most important foundation to have. Nailed it!!!!
Thanks Chris! More like this coming soon!
Hey lovin ya stuff , first time someone has made some sense on this sort of material
Just wondering what drum app or similar are you using
I m pumped about this 👍🏻
Awesome thanks! EZ Drummer 3 is pretty freakin amazing!
You and Late Night Lessons are probably might favorite teachers on RUclips. Always fantastic and practical lessons.
Thanks! I'll have to check those lessons out never seen them before.
Thank you for all the amazing videos! You’ve helped me break through plateaus and kept it fun! I’m having a hard time getting the drum backing track that you used for timing. Can you send me a link? Thank you!!!!
Yeah someone else said that so I tried it myself and it worked. Email the support page on brettpapa.com and we will get you taken care of. Thanks for watching!
Great lesson! This brought me back to Hot blooded by foreigner
Thank ya sir!
I know people who don't tap (feet or nod their head or.......... what ever) when they are playing and they are not that good at time keeping.
It helps to move!
Brettpapa is this what i would do continously if i continue guitar lesson sessions at guitar center one hour per week? But the guitat instructor wants me leaning sight reading instead, what do you say
Do both? I mean no reason to do one and not the other. Site reading can be great if you want to be able to play anything. Some music isn't tabbed and it can be a great skill. However practicing rhythm and to a beat is also terrific. I know tons of pro musicians that can't read music at all however I do don't know any pros that can't play to a beat.
Definitely the lesson that I needed And that I need to practice I was falling into a bit of a rut It gave me a lot of new ideas Thank you so much By the way that blue scale you taught Really opened a lot for me
Awesome to hear Greg! Glad the video helped ya out!
Excellent lesson. Whens the rhythm course available?
Thanks! I am in the process of making it right now. Shooting for the end of April if all goes well. It is uploaded as I go in the yearly membership though if you can't wait. Plus you get access to all of the other courses from me, Tim Pierce, and Corey Congilio.
Hi. What is the device you're using for the drum beat?
I make the beats in Superior Drummer and then turn the beat into a mp3 and put it on my iPad.
That's right up my Les Paul junior's alley
Haha!
One of your best lessons to date. If this is the free lesson, I can’t imagine how great the paid one will be!!! Can’t wait! 👏
Haha thanks! About to drop six more in depth videos like this one in the membership in the next week. Membership has tons and tons of content!
No one has mentioned what an amazing time that Tele has! Pure Tele…
Haha! Teles are amazing!
This is really dope Brett! And boy do I need it. Always inspiring, thx man
Glad you liked it!
Hello Brett :
Older drummer picking up the guitar .
This will take me to my next step .
Have a Great Day !
Subbed Cheers
Based on my comment , perhaps you would suggest one of your other lessons from your play list . Thank You for your time .
In the meantime , I’ll be working on this :)
P.S Great tutorial
Awesome to hear! Thanks for the sub! I am going to be doing more stuff like this soon. I have some more in my yearly membership at my website too.
Thanks!
Thanks Brett great video with out a
doughty, timing is ever thing
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
This is such a fantastic lesson and so useful. Thanks Maestro!!!
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
This is such a great lesson. Thank you Brett. So glad I discovered your channel.
Sure thing! Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Love the tone you're getting on that Tele! What is your signal chain? Amp/Mic or Modeler?
Thanks Louis! It is the Nash into a Lazy J J20 with probably a Nobles style OD or boost into an OX into the Apollo.
@@BrettPapa Thanks for the quick response! I was hoping you'd say you were using some modeler or plugin, as that's how I'm currently setup and I'd love to try and cop your sound, but man, that's my dream Tele tone, thick, but also chimey and articulate. Those chords you play sound so good with that tone. I often struggle with thinking my Tele or Tele's in general may be too thin or anemic, but this tone you're getting reminds me again of why I'm playing a Tele in the first place, hah. Gonna come back to this video as a reference point in my tele tone search!
Brett this is such an awesome video all around. Appreciate you brother 🤘🏼. The Bridge pickup in that Tele sounds sooo damn good! Enjoy your weekend sir 🙌🏼🙌🏼✌🏻
Thanks Jason! Have a great weekend as well!
Hi cannot seem to locate the stash of licks courses in your store. Thanks
I believe it is only in the Yearly Membership now.
What kind of tele are you playing?
Nash
Great video man. Thank you.
Sure thing!
13:20h, Figaro, Figaro...
Brett you are the MAN !
You've taught me so much
keep up the good work
Thanks Thomas! Glad the vids have helped ya out!
All guitarists move their bodies except Robert Fripp LOL
Haha! That guy is crazy good!!!
@@BrettPapa And you a crazy good teacher :) Thank's for another GREAT lesson !
Big Help ! More when you can Pappa Bret. Thnx. Bear
Will do Gary! Thanks for watching!
Alright, it’s been over 2 days!! I’m just recovering from the shock of… 💫NEW CAP!💫NEW CAP!💫NEW CAP!💫 Ha Brett, from the guy who offered to buy you a NEW CAP! Great Job on the latest video! 👍🎸✌️😎
Lol!
Great lesson! Really dug this type of lesson.
Thanks Blake! More coming soon!
Great tutorial! Because it's so dam true. Once we said that, Jwinter, status quo, Kiss,Boston , Ufo, Msg, acdc, Molly Hatchet, Allman Brothers, lynyrdS, zztop, Thin Lizzy, JudasP, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Alice in chains Ratm, that's me mastered the references of the "Rhythm" guitar to learn the 4/4 on rock. But for the melody and the solos everything is in classical music! Most of the greatest have all graduated in CM. RR, EVH generation and so on... you can't do without listening to at least a few references if you want to learn to understand what the melody is in a piece and how to deal with it.
Really apreciate also all the linked pages ...is it a senn tele you play on cause it seems ? Keep on Broth cause you got it dam right !
Oh by the way i would add something about your tutorial : "RECORD YOURSELF" cause you can play hours and hours if you dont hear what you played , you never be able to know where it's not done well .Also it gives you habits to add knew ideas to "link" from some parts you played .
Thanks for checking it out!
Such a great lesson, brother! You are a class act. Thank you so much!
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
hey man....
I really really hope you read this!!!!!
hands down this has been the single most ear opening lesson I have ever...EVER EVER.... watched .... YOU ARE THE MAN!
you're the greatest teacher
I can't believe how you made everything click in my head ...
Thank you for being so cool thank you for spending your time to make these videos
and thank you for making my life just a little bit brighter
That's amazing to hear! Glad it helped ya out! Thanks for tuning in!
Awesome lesson Thank you . I needed this. This kind of teaching is what is needed.
that Tele and general amp tone sounds crazy good.....dang. Great video as usual....thx Brett!
Thanks so much!
Hey Brett. I joined your Membership recently and it's awesome. I'm just wondering if you are going to add the Rhythm course anytime soon. Thanks, and keep up the great work!!
Awesome! Thanks for the support. Mixing Major and Minor course and rhythm course are up next. Both are being filmed right now.
Somehow, I missed this one but it l brilliantly came up on RUclips once again. Thanks, Papa. I love it,.really musical and a proper lesson
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Sorry, another comment: When you started with the syncopation I just wanted to say that, after you get warmed up, that becomes so much easier! It's more natural. But ppl should warm up first. I like the stuff you're adding, too! Get it!
Thanks man! Thanks for watching!
Hi using the link here and go through PayPal and when I return to the site it’s not gone through
Ah I’m in!
Awesome!
Brett, I am new to your channel but everything you put out is pure gold. This is such a valuable lesson. Thank you so much. BTW your tone is amazing, what is that Tele and what amp/ pedal are you using? Thank you and keep it up! 🤘🎸
Wow thanks man! The amp is a Lazy J20, guitar Nash 60's Tele, and as far as pedals go I am not sure I was using any but if I was it was either a Rockett Jeff Archer or a Nordland ODR-C. That amp sounds fantastic on it's own.
Brett speaks. I listen! No matter the subject, Brett has the innate ability to convey important guitar subjects and super practical real-world concepts. This most recent offering by Mr. Papa is no exception. Jim C.
Wow thanks Jim! Glad you liked it! More on the way.
Kinda cool that you're always upgrading your gear, after years you finally invested in a new hat. Reminded me of my grandpa. About every 5 years my grandma would throw away his sweat stained hat and he would be pissed at her for about a month. I can only imagine your California cap in a landfill somewhere. Good lesson Brett. Thanks
Haha! Thanks! I actually have a bunch of those same hats and keep changing them about every 6 months. I meet so many people wearing this hat that I don't think I'll ever stop lol! My buddy gave me as ton of them.
This is AWESOME Brett....what i've needed to get me to the next phase as a beginner, i was in a rut until today!
Awesome to hear! Glad it helped!
That Tele sounds epic 😇 What pickups are installed in it?
Lollar Tele Specials. Great pickups!
@Brett Papa Thanks for the information and for the great lessons 👍
With this lesson, I end up playing, turn up the radio, by autograph. Lol, just love this jam.
Sweet!
Aloha Brett, great video as I really need help with my rhythm. One line you said is something like “May be an intermediate player and can do riffs but means nothing without rhythm”, of course I am paraphrasing. Watched it 3 times in the last couple days and went ahead and took advantage of your course, purchased it yesterday and am looking forward to diving in. Rock on man, thanks.
Awesome! Thanks so much for the support! More on the way soon!
Love the lesson, but I can't get the grooves by clicking or copying the link, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I just checked on that and it is working on my end. Hit up support at brettpapa.com and we will get you taken care of.
Your timing is perfect. This is exactly what I need right now. Thank you!!
Thanks Bill! More like this coming soon!
I bet you described most of your subscribers, can play some licks but can't hold the rhythm to save their life. Your lead lessons are excellent, but your rhythm lessons really set you apart. Nice job!
Thank ya! More of this coming soon!
Great lesson !!! So basic really, but so valuable to help get out of playing ruts. Thanks brother, love your stuff every time !!!! 👍🏼
Sure thing! Thanks for tuning in!
Great lesson.. Brett. Very cool stuff.. let’s have more stuff like this.. the best from Denmark 🇩🇰
Yep more coming soon. Whole course in the works on this and lots of it in the yearly membership.
Thank you , Brett. You are the best guitar teacher in the world. I foliow you from Argentina
Thanks so much!
Totally right. Basic and therefore so strong. Get this right and you are off. Thanks.
You are welcome!
Such fun to watch you play. Learned so much from you. Thanks and hopefully more chord/rhythm vids from you in the future.
Thanks! Yep more like this coming soon!
You’re the best teacher on RUclips
Wow thanks! Glad you like the lessons!
Great lesson on a not so easy art .
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it!
Excellent lessen Brett ! Time is everything. And Great Tone ! Question - What pedals and amp are you using in this video ?
Thanks Kenny! I was just plugged straight into a Lazy J J20 I believe. That amp is incredible! Had a touch of verb and delay in post. Usually the Sunset Sound Reverb and some sort of an Echoplex plugin.
I played a ton for about 11 years. Just picked it up again after a 3 year hiatus. It’s like looking at the guitar with a new set of eyes. Love your lessons, getting more out of them now.
Awesome! Welcome back!
Thanks Brett for this video. This is the kind of stuff I've been looking for. Good rhythm lessons accompanied with the riffs that go with it. It seems like 98% of all lessons on RUclips are about lead. And of course we all know most guitar playing is rhythm with licks and lead sprinkled in. Hope to see more like this from you. I have a couple of your courses and you are one of my favorite guitar teachers. Thanks again. And BTW, absolutely love the /13 tones
Awesome! Thanks so much for the support! Yeah there will be more like this soon. Also I'm going to be putting a ton of stuff like this in the yearly membership!
Such a cool, helpful and practical lesson! Awesome share - thanks 🙏 Papa B 🍻 I’ve downloaded this clip and the drum tracks. Sound quality is awesome 🤩 Cheers beers
Thanks Brett! Glad you liked the lesson. Yeah that drum program sounds amazing!!
ALways a real pleasure to hear you saying "welcooome welcooooooooome" and listen your leason. Thank you very much for the precious thinks you learn to us.

Hey Brett, did that David Gilmour series ever happen when you got you single coils strat?
Gearing up to do bunch of Gilmour after these couple of Van Halen videos I am doing.
Thanks Senior Papa
Need to get my rhythm in time. Lots of help Brett. Keep it coming 🎸
Will do! More on the way soon!
Nice to see the Nash again!!! I bet the tootle is really hard to put down. The Tuttle, I’m sure is amazing though.
Both are awesome. I play all of them every day. They each have their own thing for sure!
Thanks you😊
Sure thing!
Thanks Brett! Great lesson! I was attempting to play Tattooed Lady by R. Gallagher the live version & the intro was stumping me somewhat till I saw you play those riffs. Thanks!
Great tune! Rory is amazing!
We should play a game where we freeze the video and try to find the funniest Brett face 😂. You're the best Brett!
Lol! People send me stuff like that.
God that tele sounds great!!
Haha! Thanks Brian! It's a good one. Tough to beat a good Tele and amp combo!
