I love the look of this. I am wondering if the granny square is to measure 8” across before or after the black is crocheted around the coloured granny square?

Why not a slip stitch to bring the two sides together? Using a single crochet will give a thick lumpy seam.

I have found when I slip stitch the granny squares together they don’t lay flat. I think it’s because my slips are too tight but definitely a good option to try !

Would this pattern be the right size for a girl ages 10 to 11?

This would be more suited for an adult size. You could probably replicate it by making the actual granny squares smaller!
