On the open palm mittens I found that making a lengthwise cut in the bottom of the wrist part (along the wrist artery) solves the cramping problem. The wrist part, when worn over your wetsuit, just restricts the blood flow way too much for comfort. The cut prevents obstruction of blood flow.
We used to use “shrimper’s gloves” with cotton liner gloves underneath and old fabric Trophy sailing gloves. This is simpler. Tested various ideas in 35 F temp driving on the Highway at 55 mph.
I remember that advise to use kitchen gloves for windsurfing was given by italian champion Manu Maxia (wife of Klaus Maran) more than 30 years ago... Not (only ) for winter surfing, at that time Windsurfer One design had square section wooden boom... I have been occasionally using kitchen gloves since then
in winter time i sailing without any gloves , just sail fr 5 min back to the land defrost fingers and then finger dont frost any more. but interesting to try kichen gloves
For me O'Neill Psycho Tech full neoprene mittens 5mm or 7 mm when air temperature is below 10 Celsius lets me windsurf for over 3 hours non stop with no cold fingers. Makes your skin look white and wrinkled though. Rip Curl mittens are just as good. I sail down to 4 Celsius. I've tried all the neoprene finger gloves and they don't work below 10 Celsius, maybe help a little for a short session though. I've never had a problem with cramping or sore arms wearing gloves, can't relate to that issue. I don't do forward or back loops or other aerial stunts though, could imagine that mittens wouldn't give enough grip for that but don't know.
Decathlon has very affordable thick gloves for surfing. I've cut the palm out of them with scissors. Works good for me. I've used 2 pairs of Pro Limit open palm mittens before, but they tear very quickly and are 2-3x more expensive. Tried kitchen gloves but did not work for me (cramp).
The most underestimated detail of using gloves in windsurfing is the grip on the inside. Best solution to keep your hands dry (no thermal insulation) are disposable nitril gloves with grip (e.g. stronghand). You can even use them underneath open balm gloves. If it gets even colder I use neoprene gloves in claw form (ion). Major upgrade for these is to apply some liquid latex on the inside.
Great video😊. Is it possible that you could do a video on which teknik you use when you go in the back footstrap. Is it not that i cant get in the back footstrap, but sometimes i struggled with it. I know there is a lot of these videos, but a video like you did with the powerjibe could be very nice🤙🤙
It is a question of brain training. You should imagine where the foostrap is, and put your foot inside without looking. Put your back foot against the strap just before the move.
Try a pair of thin fleece gloves under the dish gloves. Tuck the dish gloves into your wetsuit. You'll stay warm and dry and won't get the arm cramps. Works in cold Rhode Island water!!
All body warming cloth work on same principle - creating a layer with low thermal conductivity. Rubber has quite high thermal conductivity. That is why you still feel cold after you took rubber glows on. Water also has high thermal conductivity. You need to create air layer underneath the glows. Get larger rubber glows and some thermal liner glows made of soft fabric underneath. And may be you do not need to wear neoprene mittens on. Another source of coldness - evaporation of water from surface. The rubber glows should be somewhat water repellent. Water should not stick to its surface, so it will be nothing to evaporate. Many neoprene glows have fabric surface, water fills that and then evaporates intensively on wind. That is why they are cold. Neoprene with rubber surface is better in this regard. Also, mittens are always warmer than glows.
Black, thick surgical gloves. Note: Not the thin ones. These deteriorate after one session. I am referring to the thick ones that are used in catering. These cut the windsheer, and keep the hands dry, hence warm. And if you are careful they last quite a while.
We went surfing with yellow gloves on the 90'. The theory is like this: You don't want to wear thick gloves because they make your arms getting cramped. Therefore the thin yellow gloves. They are not actually insulating but they prevent the hands getting wet and drying in the wind afterwords, which sucks all warmth out of your hands very quickly, because vaporizing water needs energy. In the end you have quite warm hands with no cramping.
Tried those, but they are quite stiff and you dont have a lot of grip on the inside. Also important is the length of the sleeve.shouldnt be too short, otherwise water gets inside.
Dude about cramps because you have to squeeze so hard? Do I missing something. Because I thought that your weight will hold the sail downforched. Then the only thing you have to do is hold the boom whit your fingertips and put your dumb on the boom not around the boom. This causes the heavy squeezing. Cookie from the you tube channel : Ride along whit cookie told mee that in one off his video, s. He calls it piano playing because piano playing you only do whit your fingertips. I tried it out and it makes sailing after years of heavy squeezing so much more easier. I sail the point 7 ac1 too and whit that sails It must be easier to play the piano because the sail is so steady and stable.. But it's difficult to learn yourself something new if you do it all those years. So I hope it gives you some insights whit that. Just sharing the knowledge. I surf in the winter too because I don't want to quit when it's getting colder.. Like your video, s love your sailing.. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the ideas. But take into consideration, that we were a) heavily overpowered and b) it was freezing cold. Cookie sails in warm waters on small gear, its not comparable in any way. If we touch the water once, our hands completely freeze and we can´t move the fingers anymore. Just to give some more context...😄 But yes, with a perfect trim, it should be easy. However its all different with slalom boards and so on..😅 Thanks for the feedback anyway, next time I will pay more attention to sailing easy. But this time the gusts almost made me fly away...🤙🏾
I know you guys wanna look like pros, but sailing without a lifejacket in that cold is pure stupidity. Harness crash, broken whatever, water is Really cold and you’re screwed. But cool video as always 👌
a great video with lots of technical details. Super ride surf scenes. Everything is well explained. These are great videos. Thank you very much. Wigand von vogelandfriends.

I remember that back in the old days, you could get neopren finger gloves, which were pre-bent to prevent cramping

Hey Nils,
Great Video 👍
10:17 what a beatiful panorama. Just perfectly blasting in front of this view (Kulisse?😂)

Nice 👍
I don't like neo gloves too.
Yellow gloves 😂 habe to try it soon. Amazing 😍
Thanks for not cutting the jibes!!! 👍👍👍
I use just some dishwasher gloves with a rubber band around the wrists surprisingly warm
Nice!
I don’t know but orange ones do 😊

You have choosen the "Klein" :D ...take XL (very rar) and take a thin and flexible gardenhandschuh below...works better :)

Cuuute ❤
How cold was it??
I think between 5-8 degrees air temp and 3-4 degrees water temp.😊
@@MarioKuempel that's quite cold 🥶
What goes up?
The world wide kitchen glove sales!😂
Wo wart ihr Surfen (Surfspot) ?
Das ist der Zwenkauer See - am Ende des Pulvermühlenwegs. :-)
I only Surf without gloves, because of the GRIP and less Diameter. If there ist enough Wind my hands are warm
Was meinst du mit Einfädelhandschuhe?😅
google "Weißer Profi Baumwollhandschuh" :)@@MarioKuempel
Was für Trapeztampen würdest du einen Anfänger empfehlen?
Point-7 Vario Tampen sind so ziemlich die besten. Einfach in 24-30 Inch nehmen.

Try using your open-mit gloves but with pinky and ring finger NOT inside.Thank me later😉
