I was 16 years old (now 42) with a fresh driver's license in my pocket when my dad said, "Son, I'm going to buy you a new vehicle for you and the only requirement is that it has to be a truck and, of course, reasonably priced." I was so stoked that I shopped all over town but eventually settled on a new, 1998 dark red Toyota T100 with a 6 cylinder engine. I put over 125,000 miles on that truck during the 7 years I owned it going back and forth from high school and college. The engine was bulletproof and I only ever had 2 problems: the brake cable needed adjusting once because it got too loose and the heater had to be replaced because it sounded like a flock of pigeons going crazy in the glove box when I turned on the heat. Only $600 of repairs in 7 years for a truck that I averaged driving 50 miles per DAY? Not too shabby. Very often, people would randomly ask me if I was interested in selling it and finally, when I put a for sale sign on it, it sold within a week for $7000. Best truck EVER. Thanks for paying homage to a great truck and bringing back the memories Scotty!

Lived in a small town too so any entertainment or hanging out with friends I had to make the same trip. After that, it tapered off but made plenty of 4 hour weekend road trips between my parent's house and college. It was heavily used for 7 years and I loved it.

It is always great to hear of people's experiences with particular vehicles. My father had a car assigned to him, a company car. They ran out of vans and gave him a Ford Taurus Wagon. He piled the back with his tools (heavy)- he was a large generator maintenance man and sales guy driving all over Florida. He drove that car for many years. He put over 250,000 miles on it and was on the fourth transmission (he said they lasted about 75K each) when they finally got him a van. He is a firm believer in that car. He had to replace a few engine mounts. Two close friends of mine had Toyota trucks in the late nineties. They liked them but they were really rusty- the lower part and especially the beds. There was some kind of recall on them for rusting out I believe. This was in FL.

I had it for 30 years and finally sold it too my son 3 years ago and he is still driving it today with close to 400,000 miles on it. It has had body work and new paint. Best truck I ever owned but I am getting old and wanted air-condition since the Toyota never had it. I now have a 2013 Ram Express 5.7 liter, 4x4 with 140,000 miles and still running great. I owned the first model year of the Tundra (2000). I sold it to my neighbor after 237,000 miles. Only one issue which was a recall - the parking brakes were misadjusted out of the factory, so I got a free set of rear brakes. Loved that vehicle. Later model changes added depth to the truck bed, which made their capacity more like what you find in American-made full-size pickups. Too bad Toyota ditched the V8 engine for Tundra. I had plenty of power - even when fully loaded. There's a reason the Big 3 American pickup makers hardly sell any V6 full size pickups.

The new Tundra with twin turbo v-6 is having problems with wastegates, involving removing the whole cab to replace. I would have been happy if Toyota would have made a turbo diesel v-8 Tundra rumoured they were going to make. T100s are awesome. I actually think the early Tundra was more like 7/8 size.
