When this song came out, I was 13 or 14 and I got made fun of in school cuz I really liked this song. I'm 28 now o_o
I always heard the "drowning" part as a metaphor for the emotions he has after losing the love of his life. all the ocean talk and everything is all metaphor. Read the lyrics and you hear a lot of words equating what he is feeling to what he is describing.
Like jumping from the bow yea just to prove that I knew how yea ❤️.

Wow, I hadn’t heard this since highs school!
I love them so much. Just got back to LA from seeing them in Texas. Their music saved my life in some ways. This is the 2nd one I ever heard. Only Lost is Found is a spiritual experience but I don’t think it has a video.
In high school during my junior year we all got to pick a song to bring in and dissect the lyrics with the class and this song was my pick!
This is the first one I think I saw you do live. You read off a couple of my comments. Awesome band.
Justin said he wrote this song while on a cruise and in the grips of a period of very deep depression. He said he walked up to bte bow, looked over and the thoughts of self harm were overwhelming. The lyrics came tonhim then and he wrote the song, as they were his actual thoughts at the time.

If you look into his personal life story, it’s intense. Extremely relatable for me, personally. This whole album gets me through the roughest of times. There’s a lot more sustenance & deepness to their music than is visible without knowing any of the personal history. Hate Me is another good one you should give a listen to. ;)

To really appreciate Blue October you have to see them live! I've been to several shows and they never disappoint. This isn't my favorite release as it really doesn't demonstrate Justin's vocal range or grit or the crazy talent of the band. Their best releases have to be the live 'Foiled for the Last Time' or 'Things We Do at Night!.'
