The one thing that stuck out was obviously the Rutan redesign which was pretty cool and much better than the original followed by the more believable ship striking land. Always enjoy seeing these.

There can be truth to that. There was more freedom to imagine with the less-advanced visual effects of the times as opposed to most overwhelming effects nowadays. Especially where classic British sci-fi shows like Doctor Who are concerned.

For 1977? The same year Star Wars came out? Yeah, no, the effects were ropey when they were new. They would've been okay for 1967, but not 1977.

The ship crash is a bit lifeless. The rigging collapses in the original and there's more movement to match the crunching of the hull on the rocks. The new shot there seems pointless if it's actually less dramatic.

Thanks for uploading the comparison video so soon!
I like the new effects - except the ship crashing into the rocks. The CGI ship looks too big. The original 1977 version was a smaller yacht or clipper?
The original effect was also more violent, showing more damage to the vessel on impact.
Was that Skinsale’s dead body behind the Rutan Scout, as it climbed the stairs? Nice touch, if it was?
When I get my set, I’ll edit a hybrid cut, keeping the best original and new effects together.

No doubt the original effects were classic efforts for the technology of the time in what was a wonderful period episode that used the ALIEN formula of a group of people trapped in a small environment and having to deal with an alien creature that picks them off one at a time.
The new effects overlays definitely breath new life into this story.

They look in-keeping with the production values of the time, and give a feel of what the story might have looked like if they had a better budget. This also (hopefully) makes them less likely to age badly as modern technology improves (as happened with The Ark in Space)

Regarding "hiding"... I was surprised how some of the "new" effects were how they "fogged" up the camera view. Suppose it does help in some respects mask the Indoor Studio feel some. In others it seems like the Rutan or the setting POV is needlessly visually impaired. Realize they want to hide model work or "feather" the Video some for the Rutan POV...
Maybe should have gone with Predator Vision or something. Taking the cleaner "1977" studio video and overlayed a Negative Image and/or IR view for "Reuben the Rutan"... Instead it looks like it just has Cateracts.

I like how they made the new Rutan still look like a puppet. Like I can imagine the strings above it helping it move. It's a nice touch.
It's funny because it nearly fooled me into thinking they made a puppet, shot scenes with it and inserted it back over the original Rutan.
However, I do remember some VFX artists saying that in order to make a CGI creature look real, you make it move like a puppet or like an animatronic... you know something tangible and believable.
Overall, it's a very impressive display of CGI. 😌 Too bad they didn't touch Underworld. That story needed all the help it could get.

New fans can watch the classic series without being too put off from the poorly aged effects, while older fans can re-experience episodes closer to how they remember them (with time, the brain can often trick people into remembering visuals looking a lot better than they actually did).

I might be in the minority here but I don't like the new effects for the Rutan when it is disguised as Ruben, I prefer the old effects to be honest same goes for the boat it's too large in the new one and it doesn't evoke a sense of danger like the old effects do, yes the old effects for the boat are far from perfect but at least you see it get damaged. The other effects are quite nice although the TARDIS looks more like the modern TARDIS props than the one from 1977 which at that point was the Newberry prop.

From my point of view, their are several inconsistency's to this video that doesn't fit to the storyline of the episode.
    1. The shooting star of the Ruton ship was ok, but it was to far off in the shot. Needs to be a bit bigger or coming in from another angle.
    2. The fog was perfect the way it was, their was no need to add more to possibly block a shot.
3.The steam ship render was good, but the red flares were just blobs of light. It needed to have a red glowing smoke trail going over the boat highlighting parts of the boat red.
    4. The electricity the Ruton gave off was to showy, it should have bin like arcing bolts of current, highlighting & popping out of random points of the victims body like a plasma globe.
    5. The Ruton Transformation, this is a biggy point to make. The Ruton human shape is most likely a holographic projection from its own body like a bioluminescent fish, which was mentioned in the episode, not a splitting human body suit.
    6. The Ruton itself, another biggy of mine. The Ruton is suppose to be like a grate jellyfish with electrical stinger cell barb tentacles that it uses to pull itself along threw the scene. You could have had the tentacles shoot out, grabbing things to pull itself threw the shot. With a little glow or arc of green electrical sparks were it touches, like a live wire on the floor or metal hand bars up the stairs. Not a floating octopus with a googly eye.
Anyway, that's my opinion, my view of the effects to the episode. And don't think of what I said as a disappointed anger to the video, more on the lines of, another possible view to contemplate.

As usual, some of the new shots are pointless and appear to be there for the sake of doing something different.
I do like the new Rutan, but the over-the-shoulder shots of it talking to the Dr are disappointing. There is far more interesting detail on the original's "head" and when it dies, what on earth is taking the new one so long? At least the original melted and slid down the stairs.
Oh, and as it climbed up the outside of the lighthouse - the new one was more shit than the original. That certainly wouldn't have become a defining memory in my 6 year old self like the original shot did.

I haven't started collecting the new ones yet so I didn't know they did this. I like some of the new effects, and they're obviously trying to make the styles fit. But I think they're give and take.
I actually don't like Rutan design they added. The old one has a charm, and the new one looks too generic--they should've kept it as more of a sea-slime that slides across the rocks and the stairs. That and the extra fog they added in post is just unnecessary.
But I do like how the last shot shows the sun coming up on a now lifeless lighthouse. Very moody.

I prefer the original. All they should have done was add in some CGI jellyfish-like tentacles to grab the stair and walls like it's pulling itself along. The body was effective as it was. The new Rutan looked too much like a stiff rubber toy. The zip down the middle of Ruben effect was just silly looking. Won't be watching it with the new effects.
The spaceship looks kinda cool but I believe the books describe their spaceships as as crystalline. The new boat effect was a little more realistic looking and about the best part of the update besides the spaceship.

But honestly having the rutans fling it's tentacles up the staircase and hall itself up would feel more realistic
I know it's sci-fi and not real but the way they have it basically floats the way they had it do, just takes me out of the story, at least with movements inspired by other sea life I could accept it more

Many many people, notably nearly every interviewee who actually worked on the programme in some capacity, have expressed an interest in seeing what could be done with modern technology, (some of those have even been involved on these updates), so if It can be done why not try it? Hardly pointless. Granted some re-dos work better than others but it’s a nice extra and the originals are always there if you can’t handle it. A lot of us parting with cash like having the option.
As for the b/w stories there’s still 5 seasons to come. Personally I wouldn’t be keen on something like that ghastly Daleks re-edit but I can see a few stories where a touch up in the vein of DIOE would be interesting.
