@wwswhl773 indeed. The White and Black Guardians played very important roles in the eras of Four and Five. There are more of them, but we haven't met them on television unless the Toymaker is one of them, as spinoff media has implied. The Guardians of the Universe are likely the most powerful beings in the Whoniverse. They represent universal concepts like order, entropy, chaos, dreams and the like. They're essentially gods, but they have to work through intermediaries, as in the Key to Time saga.
Zed Cars not Zee Cars, it's a British police series that ran from the 1960s for two decades, and in early episodes features Brian Blessed, as one of the police car officers. It was set in a suburb of Liverpool and many well known actors starred as guest, just like The Bill, which was set in London. @@timelordsalad I didn't say anything about intent, you could be right. The vid also suggested RTD could say Toymaker is a TL, that's what my comment directly addresses. WOTC worked closely with BBC, if BBC were going to release a detail like Toymaker being a TL they would've ensured WOTC didn't 1) preview it early 2) label it the wrong type
"Zee" Cars?????!!!!!! C'mon Sean, it was our show not the Yanks ;) (Also Purves going on to be a well loved Children's TV Presenter could have been worth mentioning, including being a Blue Peter presenter (though I prefer to remember We Are The Champions!))
One thing I felt was absent in this video was the covering of where in a novel we get to find out about that first meeting with the toy maker when the doctor and two of his school friends managed to go to the celestial toy room after steeling a tardis and only the doctor escaped with one of them being turned into a doll and the other becoming the toy makers new body this lead to the doctors expulsion from the academy
Although as far as I remember, the Doctor didn't escape, the Toymaker let him go because they knew the Doctor would be a much more worthy opponent when he was older.
I knew most of these things! But I have loved the Toymaker since I first saw the original episodes. Also, celestial isn’t even a racist slur. That’s a relatively new myth. That serial does however have a racist slur when a character plays eenie meenie.
Did you confuse "Celestial" with "Oriental"? If I recall, in the last era of WHO, we met two more Celestials...the brother and sister...I assumed it referred to the type of Beings they were.
I just looked into it, and no, apparently Chinese immigrants were once referred to as Celestials Because the Chinese government referred to China as the Celestial empire. (In Chinese obviously) And so translating that gave the western world a “poetic” way to refer to the Chinese immigrants. Edit: and based on what I could find, the Chinese also referred to themselves as this? So I’m honestly not sure how this was ever a slur, or why it’s offensive I really can’t find anything on that part.
@@williamkingham3303 It became a slur the way "negro" became one -- hostile usage by people who weaponized it against a minority they wanted to denigrate. You'll find hostile and dismissive uses of Celestial referring to Chinese people specifically and Asian people more broadly in Westerns, particularly pulp Westerns.
I'm 57 years old and never heard this before. I'm sure RTD will be giving his explanation on this when he does his after show party. I'm more interested if this is the story based on the comic. What a blinder to have 2/3 comeback stories from pre conceived material. All that aside, the Toy maker I'd an old favourite and good for the show to bring him forward, looking forward to Neil who is one of my favourites since How I met your Mother.
@@Cee1003 You probably don't read a lot of pulpy westerns for fun, then. I do, so I know this from personal experience with the trope (I'm also 42, so your age means very little to me and isn't proof of anything other than "different people have had different life experiences"). Since I haven't read any of the Doctor Who comics, this is all fresh material to me, and I loved Neil in Doctor Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog, so this is all fine by me.
Have I missed something? Since when is "celestial" a pejorative term for Asian people? The Toymaker WAS referred to as The Mandarin, which certainly smacks of racism. But "celestial"?
The Celestial Toymaker I don't think he ls a Time lord - the way he acts reminds me of The Black and White Guardians. Maybe he's a rogue Guardian that's why he connects with the Doctor.
I’ve listened to the Big Finish audio. It seemed like it could have been a good story, and a departure from the grim and grotesque stories of the Sixth Doctor’s first season (although I’m not saying that Vengence on Varos, The Two Doctors, and Revelation of the Daleks are bad stories).
Idea: The Doctor doesn't come from the series primary universe, at least, not from anywhere in the vicinity of Gallifrey. Maybe they're from some supremely distant galaxy, but while a Time Lord in title, he's certainly not a Gallifrey born Time Lord. Maybe Toymaker is not a Time Lord at all, but another native of The Doctors original home world?
Making Toymaker a Timelord would be a character change. But making The Doctor a 4th cosmology pillar would atleast be cleaner that the story setup in Timeless Child.
I almost wonder if the reason the Toymaker looks different more than just a recasting is because He actually Regenerated also, and that instead of a Celestial He’s actually a Timelord we’ve never seen or Heard of like the Master. Each Timetot/Timelord chooses their Title and to me The Toymaker sounds more like a Timelord Title than that of a Celestial, just my two cents.
I would say it is an avatar. A non-corporeal being of a higher plane can only interact with beings on the lower physical plane by manifesting a physical form that mortals can comprehend. This physical form could be whatever they please. Maybe a stay-puft marshmallow man in the case of Gozer the Destroyer when it delegates the choice of appearance to the Ghostbusters. No reason the Toymakers body should look the same if it is not really his body.
The word "celestial" comes from the Latin word caelestis which means "sky". It also comes from the Latin word caelum which means "sky, heaven". The word "celestial" has been used since the early 15th century to mean "heavenly, very delightful. So who made it racist???
Will they tie the Toymaker with the Timeless Child? What if the Doctor is a member of the Toymaker's race, and the, now, Time Lords manipulated the Doctor's DNA. Just a thought.
Ok, I had to Google that last one I've never heard the word celestial refer to anything other than space. My wife is Filipino and she'd never heard of this either from her part of the world. That's wild. I grew up with Doctors 4-7 and watched what was available of 1-3 but never in all these years have I heard about this. Weird. And yeah, only 3 returning things from the Hartnell era. I can think of 4 from Troughton right now, 4 from Pertwee, and the only thing I can think of from Baker is Zygons... Maybe Ncuti will fix that and face the Black Guardian or the Rutan Host. Would love both of those prospects!
@@TheZodiacz I know BG has his own 5th Doc Trilogy, but I was thinking more of things from old WHO brought back to new WHO. And you're right, Movellans were brought back ever so briefly, good call!
I've often entertained the idea that Time Lords (or a sub faction of same) get to pick a title denoting which aspect of reality they 'manage', all if which traditionally have a definite article: The Doctor, The Master, The Trickster, The Valeyard, The Toymaker. It's as if they're pieces in some game or simulation, each taking a specific role.

There was actually a novel Where tom bakers doctor face the toy maker There's also several audio adventures where different doctors have faced the toy maker It was even hinted at once that the doctor and the toy maker are related

I wonder if Donna is the only real one here, and everyone else is constructed. Perhaps the Doctor is a sentient "repeat" because The Toymaker wants to hash it out again and win... I don't know, sounds like the kind of twisty logic RTD might try! Looking forward to it regardless!
According to ther off screen material the Toymaker is also known as the Crystal Guardian (The Quantum Archangel) or the Guardian of Dreams (Divided Loyalties).
The irony in this situation lies in the contrasting treatment of cultural elements. On the one hand, traditional Chinese robes were considered problematic and consequently removed, likely due to cultural sensitivity and appropriation concerns. This decision reflected a heightened awareness of respecting different cultures and avoiding stereotypes or offensive portrayals. On the other hand, Neil Patrick Harris was permitted to use an awful German accent in a different context. TWhile the intention may not have been to offend or stereotype, using a poorly executed German accent can still perpetuate stereotypes and reinforce misconceptions about a particular culture.
The German accent was meant to offend lol, RTD wrote him as a racist (cause he is) and there is more examples of of being genuinely racist shown in the giggle apart then the changing accents he does

9:30 is it a coincidence that in that part of the trailer The Doctor and The Toymaker are wearing the same outfit?
"Zee" Cars?????!!!!!! C'mon Sean, it was our show not the Yanks ;) (Also Purves going on to be a well loved Children's TV Presenter could have been worth mentioning, including being a Blue Peter presenter (though I prefer to remember We Are The Champions!))
Well i learned a new slur. That... is something i had no idea about.
Interesting! Yeah, that seems like a huge detail to leave out 😂
The first / fifth Doctors Past Doctor Adventure Divided Loyalties.
Although as far as I remember, the Doctor didn't escape, the Toymaker let him go because they knew the Doctor would be a much more worthy opponent when he was older.
The episode skips over any none TV references of the Toymaker.
The video we didn’t know we needed!
Did you just say ZEE Cars?!?!
Ffs, Sean!
I just looked into it, and no, apparently Chinese immigrants were once referred to as Celestials
Because the Chinese government referred to China as the Celestial empire. (In Chinese obviously)
And so translating that gave the western world a “poetic” way to refer to the Chinese immigrants.
Edit: and based on what I could find, the Chinese also referred to themselves as this?
So I’m honestly not sure how this was ever a slur, or why it’s offensive
I really can’t find anything on that part.
@@Stray7 I hate westerns mate, my point was going this long without recognising a racist term that's all.
Zed Cars. Come on guys
Always just celestial, as in space, the cosmos, and beyond for me.
Neil good job... would have been better as the Master 😘
The only real big question about the Toymaker is why he's called the Toymaker instead of the Gamemaster.
I don’t remember this character, but I have seen video clips from Dr. Who of where this character was mentioned mostly🤔.
Great list! I have read The Nightmare Fair. Can't recall if it was good or not.
Glad you had a loverly time overseas but “Zee-Cars”? Lol.
@@markpostgate2551 Lmao the Stay Puft,Nice & Yeah you’re correct,I guess Wel have to wait & see.
Zee Cars? Zee? Really?
After "the celestial toymaker" premiered for 57 years, this is the first time we see toymaker appeared on screen in a TV series episode since 1966
Yeah, w'know.
The word "celestial" comes from the Latin word caelestis which means "sky". It also comes from the Latin word caelum which means "sky, heaven". The word "celestial" has been used since the early 15th century to mean "heavenly, very delightful. So who made it racist???
Didn't you know? Everything is "racist" these days.
"Zed" Cars, Never zee!
Will they tie the Toymaker with the Timeless Child? What if the Doctor is a member of the Toymaker's race, and the, now, Time Lords manipulated the Doctor's DNA. Just a thought.
Or maybe the toymaker is the Drs father 😊
@@Captain.AmericaV1that sounds so stupid
Toymaker does not have race. Just an incarnation he or rather it is a fundamental force.
"Zee Cars"? Where in America is your Irish accent from?
So, they got rid of the trappings of Asian stereotypes to put in the trappings of German stereotypes?
Dude... its zed cars not Zee cars

The Sisterhood of Karn are from the 4th Doctor era, appearing in The Brain of Morbius.
@@derekp308 Oh yeah, but I didn't consider them villains, but yeah, true.
the term celestial is used by Jago in The Talons of Weng-Chiang. The Black Guardian reappeared with the 5th Dr and Movellans with the 12th Doctor.
@@TheZodiacz I know BG has his own 5th Doc Trilogy, but I was thinking more of things from old WHO brought back to new WHO. And you're right, Movellans were brought back ever so briefly, good call!
You do know that show is pronounced Zed Cars, not Zee Cars? Damn, I hate having to be pedantic, but you do make life difficult.
The theme tune is now ear worming me. 🎶📺😁
You are not american, so pronounce the words properly - ZED is how we pronounce the final letter of the alphabet.
I’ve always thought the Toymaker was a Time-Lord. I hope it comes to be true!!
There was a reference in a story that he is an Eternal like those encountered by the 5th Doctor.
he is not a Time Lord. He wouldn't even work as a Time Lord. He is far beyond that
I've often entertained the idea that Time Lords (or a sub faction of same) get to pick a title denoting which aspect of reality they 'manage', all if which traditionally have a definite article: The Doctor, The Master, The Trickster, The Valeyard, The Toymaker. It's as if they're pieces in some game or simulation, each taking a specific role.
Literally the first time ever hearing that "Celestial" is racist... everything is racist now apparently.
Some people are only validated by the accrual of pity points. I have none to give.
"Zee cars". Oh, that just embarrassing.
"Zee cars" !?! OMG, why did nobody correct this????
"Zee Cars"? Did you say "Zee Cars"? I'm Sure that's "Zed Cars".
Only in 2 countries. The rest of the English speaking world says “zee.”
@@schoolingdiana9086you mean like how it’s pronounced “Zed” by the country that made the show?
I mean ZZ Top, being American pronounces the band name Zee Zee, not Zed Zed, so I will follow suit, but Z Cars, based on where it was made is Zed Cars, no matter what country one is in.
8:37 You do know his actor was Malaysian so it was not too serious back then
That's not how racist terms work though.
What is the music in the background?

You called it zee cars 😂😂
Also non cannon- I believe that there was a Fifth(?) Doctor novel which reminisced the younger years of both the Doctor and Toymaker. It explained that the Toymaker was exiled from Gallifrey after an incident involving (three friends) himself the Doctor and a third with tragic consequences. The Toymaker was originally Celestial as he was in the stars on his own world, now He is on Earth in our world (or is it really our world in this???) so he is now The Toymaker.
They stopped using that term back in classic who.
I wonder if Donna is the only real one here, and everyone else is constructed. Perhaps the Doctor is a sentient "repeat" because The Toymaker wants to hash it out again and win...
