What Persephone Books do is truly a labour of love, so glad they are celebrating their 25th anniversary. I'm not able to go to Bath, but thanks to your video I've decided to celebrate by picking up my copy of 'Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day'. Maybe I'll even have a 1930s cocktail with my celebratory reading!

My favorite Persephone book is High Wages, about an elegant working-class young woman who didn't always get treated the way she deserved.

If you enjoyed “English Climate: Wartime Stories” I highly recommend “Goodnight Mrs. Craven” by Molly Panter-Downes. I’ve read both and actually enjoyed Mrs Craven more…wonderful letters written for the New Yorker by Panter-Downes during WWII from London. A real slice of life. Read this during the first COVID lockdown and so much was still relatable and comforting. Great list Miranda!

Loved hearing about all your favourite Persephones! I am enjoying listening to the recordings of the events from their 25th anniversary festival, so nice to be able to enjoy them even though unable to go to the festival.
Thank you for introducing me to Persephone Books, I have a small collection but it is growing when I find one. I was watching the festival on their Instagram site, and I was a bit disappointed, that we didn't get to hear any of the talks. Just a tiny bit. Then after the festival I received my newsletter and there was note about recordings for the next month. I finally got my wish and I was able to hear a good percentage of the talks, I still have two to go. I just received my order of The Homemaker and William, an Englishman is on the way to me. I am very excited to read them and add them to my small loved collection of Persephone Books.
Hi Miranda! My sister and I went to the Festival of Books at USC and were so excited when we spotted a vendor with Persephone books! You’re recommendations helped us select books to purchase. They also had Slightly Foxed books! Double excitement! I retired a couple years ago and wanted to start reading more. Discovering you has provided such direction and inspiration. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge and love of books. I try to read the Comfort Book Club books, then watch the video with you and you Mum (she’s fabulous too). Great video. I went to Persephone last year when Nicola Beauman did a brilliant talk on Domestic Feminism which I really enjoyed. I was delighted recently to see the whole talk has been transcribed in the new edition of the Persephone Biannually. It's a fascinating read!

Such a good introduction to your favourite Persephone books. I'm always amazed how good you are at remembering the plots of so many titles! I am an avid reader and make a note of every book I read but often look back at a title I read only a few months ago and my mind is a blank as to what it was about 🤔 I've reserved The Fortnight in September from the library which will be my first Persephone and R C Sheriff read. The bluebells have begun to bloom in my garden too!

What a fun coincidence that Friday I picked up the movie Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day from my local library and plan to watch it today 📽. Thank you for so many wonderful recommendations. I like Persephone books, they look so beautiful. I have two grey books by R C Sherriff, Greengates and The Hopkins Manuscript, they are wonderful, especially the later. I definitely should buy The Fortnight in September, it’s one of my favorite books and I have read it in Russian. Thank you for your recommendations, Miranda, there is a lot of choices as usual. Persephone books are very expensive here in Australia and I was very lucky to pick some up second hand recently, one was The Home-maker.
I love the Priory and hadn't heard of They Were Sisters. I've had Somewhere at a Distance for Years and wasn't that keen on reading it till your mentions. I read it last year and did enjoy it, tho how she packed so quickly was glossed over. Greenbanks I began around Christmas and will Request again. Thank you for alerting us all over the year or two to Persephone.
That was a really good introduction to Persephone Books, Miranda.Some I have, others I'd love to have! It was a pleasure to see that quite a few of these books are now available through Blackwell's, as their prices include postage to overseas countries, therefore making Persephone editions much more affordable.
Thank you for a super Persephone recommendation episode. I have quite a few Persephone books but am always looking to grow my collection. Sadly I can't make the Persephone Festival either but I'll definitely be ordering a few more books to take on my holidays. 😊

A lovely homage to Persephone! I loved The Hopkins Manuscript but wonder how differently it would feel now after the pandemic years. My favorite chunky Persephone is Lettice Cooper’s National Provincial and I’m currently really enjoying Frances Towers’ story collection Tea with Mr. Rochester.

So many wonderful choices, I simply need to read them all now 😆 I think I may start with The Priory or They Were Sisters, as I cannot resist a book compared with The Cazalet Chronicles. The Hopkins Manuscript and To Bed With Grand Music are must reads as well, as I loved The Fortnight in September and Little Boy Lost, I would like to read more of R.C. Sherriff and Marghanita Laski works.

I'm reading Sian Davies book at the moment and thoroughly enjoying it. Dorothy Whipple is a favourite, High Wages is a good read. Another favourite is National Provincial by Lettuce Cooper . Love your recommendations as always.

Shall I say ”great minds think alike”... I just ordered my first persephone book yesterday directly from Bath! I had been offered ”harriet” by elisabeth jenking some 10 years ago. I loved it...very moving. Persephone books are not so well known in France yet.

Although I prefer the pictorial editions, you can’t beat those endpapers in the grey editions.

Persephone Books is wonderful and deserves support for the breadth of fiction they are bringing back to new readership. I visited their former home in Lambs Conduit Street just before lockdown and was in heaven! Since then I made some purchases and also very much enjoyed Fran’s lockdown readings - a really enjoyable distraction in those strange times. Like you, I love The Fortnight in September and The Home Maker. Many more to discover and they are such beautiful editions. A real joy. Best wishes to you Miranda and your lovely mum x

I have just finished Someone at a Distance from a haul of books I got for Christmas from Persephone. Really liked this book, so will order the sisters book. During the lockdown, I looked online for a reference article about Persephone books to buy, and the search led me to your YT video when you were still in your flat in London. This is how I got introduced to you and to booktube! I already own Good Evening Mrs Craven and A Fortnight in September. I plan to celebrate their 25th anniversary by buying a couple, maybe the Homemaker, and They Were Sisters. Thank you as always.

Hi and thanks for sharing your love of Persephone books. I’ve read many. Absolutely loved Miss Pettigrew, but another emotional favourite was Doreen, about her experience of being an evacuee. Have you read that? Sarah 😊
Yes, it is very good too. Her The House Opposite (my copy is published by Dean Street Press) is another of her works that has recently been reprinted.

Understood Betsy eas a childhood favorite of mine. I wonder what became of my copy! I Avidly reD The Hopkins Manuscript last year; discovered it by chance looking for an RC Sherriff. I Really enjoyed it! I was riveted. It's rather too close to our present age, thought written decades back.
They all sound great! I only wish I could purchase them in my country. I wonder if they are on Kindle or only on paperback? 🤔 I wish to read them at least on my Kindle because I have FOMO now 😂😂

Spent the last 20+ minutes madly scribbling down these titles and authors as they all sound good. I haven't read too many Persephone books, but the ones I have read I have really enjoyed. I think I would like to start with The Hopkins Manuscript as I don't read much science fiction. Thank you for your recommendations.

I love Persephone books I got 6 Persephone books in one of there boxes for chirstmas last year I love hearing some of them I haven’t heard of before knowing more about them . Might try getting some for Xmas or birthday .thank you Miranda .🩷
