WOW! You look so different here! Still beautiful. This is the author you mentioned in today's video. Now I am really curious about her bks. Thanks Alice 🙂
I like to think we shouldn’t ban books just because we disagree with the author. I’d like an all round education and to make up my own mind.
I appreciated this so much!! Put two of them on my Wishlist!!!
Yaaay, I really hope you like them when you get to them! :D
Wonderful idea for a series, Alice. Thank you. I like old movies so will search for those also. Personally, I don't think an author's whole body of work should be cancelled because of hurtful comments. Where will it all end? Their work can be discussed, along with the comments, and then readers can make up their own mind.
Thank you! Totally get that and it's true that people have to make up their own minds for sure :)
I’m a huge Dorothy Whipple fan ! I’ve read someone at a distance , high wages and random commentary and I’ve read her short stories loved them all. Great video .i can’t decide on which to read next 🥰
She's the best! And thank you so much
I'm already loving the author series! I put two Whipple books on my TBR already! I picked They Were Sisters and Greenbanks. I think you should still do an Adichie video- you introduced me to her with Americanah (I LOVED it!) and I'm looking forward to having a video dedicated to her. In my opinion, I don't think comments she made about topics elsewhere negates how very well she dealt with other subjects (race, being a woman, identity, family, immigration) in her books. For what it's worth, my vote is to keep her in your series. Looking forward to more of these!
I'm really glad you like the series! And thank you for sharing your thoughts, you've got a point!
Great idea. The books sound really interesting
Thank you! :D
Cool! I just ordered a couple of days ago “Someone at a Distance” can’t wait for it to arrive!
How fun! Really hope you enjoy it! :D
Loved this video, Alice! Whipple is one of my favorites and you perfectly described her writing style. I’m excited for your upcoming videos in this series. I would love to see a spotlight on Adichie. I think you could do it with the disclaimer of the harmful comments.
I'm so glad you liked it! I love her books too :D
They Were Sisters is the only Whipple book I currently own, so I'm excited to get to it after hearing your love for it!
It's such a great read, hope you like it! :D
Hi Alice, love your idea of making series of special authors. Especially of authors you do like and that you can recommend.
I always wanted to read something by Dorothy Whipple, since I heard about her. And I just found out that in Mai this year, a first book by this author “someone at a distance” (der französische Gast) will be published by Kain & Aber in German. I am already looking forward to it. 😊📚
How fun that she's been translated into German! :D I really hope you like it if you read it! :D
Interesting, something different. Well done
I would be interested in a video about Haruki Murakami because I would like to read their books but am a little intimidated.
Aaah, interesting! I haven't read that many of his books, but I could try to make one either way. I'll add him to the list! :D
Äääälskar ”High wages”❤️❤️❤️❤️
Jaaaa :D
This is a great idea!!! Very much look forward towards the series. Hope you will replicate this on your blog too. :-)
Oh...and Isabel Greenberg. Hope you do a video covering her spectacular works.
Thank you! Will definitely do one on Isabel Greenberg at some point! :D
I read someone at a distance which was written and set in the early 1950s. The characters were really well written and the character of the French woman, Louise is a recognisable narcissist.
Jane Harper would be great!
I'll definitely do one on her! :D
I think you can talk about adichie, but mentioning the transphobia and maybe how it changed you view?
That might be a good way to do it, thank you!
That's such a tough choice about Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I don't think there is anything wrong with doing a video about her, but I think I might personally skip it. Given that talking about how much you love her books is likely to have more people pick up her books to try them, and thereby providing her more income and power, I might not want to do that when it's unknown how she'll use that money and power (and we've seen how transphobic legislation can be supported by big names recently). It's also possible to just preface any video you make about her with that info, though, and leave it up to watchers to decide what they want to do.
My thinking exactly. It's difficult and I'll think I'll just put it off for now and see how I feel in a while!
I say skip Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie... I've read two of her books, and I enjoyed them both. However, I won't be supporting her in the future. I won't buy her books, read her books, or recommend her books. There are so many phenomenal and talented authors out there, and I just think we don't need to be uplifting the voices of people who say harmful things.
P.S. I know some people may not believe that what Ngozi Adichie has said is harmful, and I disagree, which is why I don't and won't support her from here on out.
Totally get that, thank you for sharing! I don't agree with her views either.
