I have never before heard anyone explain about the air hole, and why it is needed! Thank you so much for your excellent instruction; I always learn something new when I watch your videos. 👍😊
The Sakura Koi waterbrush has a plug for the reservoir, so that you can carry the filled reservoir very safely when travelling (I personally find this feature quite useless, but I know some people who really appreciate it). The full size Koi also has a 9 ml capacity, while the most other Japanese waterbrushes, including the Pentel Aquash and Yasutomo Neji (the latter of which I despise) have a 7.5 ml capacity.
The flat brush is designed to have the outer inside cover of the brush removed to make a much bigger bristle wash brush which is great. Try taking that outer plastic off the brush for washes.
Another wonderful video! Very, very informative! You are providing a wonderful service, especially for people who are newbie. I just discovered you today. Can you please give me some advice or idea on how one can learn to sketch (w/o enrolling in art school). I traveled a lot, now have the time to sketch (if I knew how) of all the places I have memories of. Will be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks.
+mibello aleman You can get this book called 'Keys to Drawing' or if you prefer learning by video I have a beginners course on drawing from observation at gumroad.com/parkablogs
Great review, tfs. Interesting that the Niji brushes are identical to the set of 4 Kuretake/Zig waterbrushes that I have (bought in UK from Kuretake), even the colours are the same. I read somewhere that they are the same Company but forget who owns whom. They also have the pen-holder clip moulded to the cap (maybe designed to put a string through it. Who knows. The 2 same sizes of the set of 4 have the air hole too. I find that strange as to why they would put the air hole in only 2 of the 4. My flat/broad brush cap does not fall off, however.
thanks for this comparison of waterbrushes, it will help in my decision of which one to buy! what brand of palette are you using and would you recommend it?
Maybe three months to six months depending on how often I use them. The holbein one is the least durable, or maybe because that's the one I use most often.
+Joe Liang It is not really a problem I suppose, unless it starts growing algae. Sometime if you have paint on the brush tip, it will diffuse back into the water compartment, making the water there dirty.
It depends on which country you're in and if the paint brands are available there. If you're buying the box set from Arters. I would recommend you get the 10-colour set under by my name "Teoh Yi Chie" - do a search on their website. Ask if you can replace the Viridian (useless) in that set to Phthalo Green (Blue Shade). Or you can get the 10-colour M Graham intermediate set from Amazon which cost USD $75.
I just rewatched and he said it's a Windsorand Newton heavy weight box (not sure the heavy weight part is accurate but he did say it was Windsor and Newton)
Thank you so much for this review, Teoh! I recently got the Holbein brush, and the problem with it is that it releases the water continuously, and there's no stopping it. After a while, I am not able to make pigmented mixes or lay a lot of pigment on the sketch - instead, I am having puddles, backruns and washed out colors. I was wondering if you had the same experience with it? I'm not sure if I got a bad brush, or is it actually normal for all Holbein brushes. The brushes I owned before this one (Derwent and a flat Yasutomo) had stoppers in the barrel. To fill them with water, I had to pull out the stopper, and then put it back on before screwing the barrel to the bristle part. My Holbein, however, lacks a stopper. Does yours have a stopper on the barrel?
I try not to press much first. Then I use tissue to dry off excess water. I don't use waterbrushes already because of this water-always-flowing problem.
Hello thank you for comparison video. I have had a bunch but either worn out or for me too hardGail new subscriber to squeeze. I never knew Holbein had a water brush ! 😆
Nice comparision, i have the Pentel one and i find it not so good, since i found it very hard to control water release, i liked the Yasutomo one, i think im gonna buy it and take a try
bought the pentel ones and regretted it so much 😭 they can make finer lines than koi, but it's really hard to control the water. even when i don't fill them up with water and just use it as normal brushes, the water retention is very weird
hi teoh. im thinking of getting a pentel waterbrush just to try it but i dont know which size to get. what is the size closest to size 6 normal brush? thank you!
Get the biggest possible size. The small ones are really too small. You can easily paint details with the biggest brush too, because the biggest isn't that big.
Very helpful video! You did a great job of showing the strengths of each waterbrush, and showing the differences compared to a normal brush. Also, what kind of paper are you using in this video? The texture is pretty neat.
hello, your video is really helpful, i would like you to help me with something...im lefthanded and im learning calligraphy..i can only do it with brush markers because my pulse is not very good, i have the pentel waterbrushes but i cant do the thin strokes..could you recommend me a brush pen that could work as simmilar as a marker , i dont know if u know what i mean..that the bristol doesnt open much! thanks so much
@Teoh Yi Chie please update this. I trust this comment and bought sakura koi. The tip is nothing like Pentel and it leak everywhere. Sakura koi waterbrush is the most disappointed art supply I have bought. Others warned about the leakage but I trusted your channel.
Sakura koi is nothing like Pentel. The tip is not as pointy as Pentel and it leak water everywhere. I am not the only one have that problem. Please pin this if you find it's true.
+Santiago RUclips I'm not sure if I'm going to make individual waterbrush reviews. They are all pretty similar except for the Holbein which has much longer bristles and higher water capacity, but bristles wear out faster.
+Teoh Yi Chie OHH THANKSSSS! :D I always use this for painting but the annoying part is that few of the color is permanent in the brush so I can't remove it, I want it to be clean and white. lol xD
I have some pentel brushes. When I press on the compartment the water comes out of the breather holes. This is not supposed to happen right? Does anyone else have that problem? Also I‘m guessing this is not happening with any of the brushes in the video is it?
Can anyone with a Pentel waterbrush tell me if its normal for water to drip from above the bristles when you apply more than a little bit of pressure to the cartridge?
Thanks for the reply Teoh. I haven't had an opportunity yet to test them out properly as I'm waiting on my watercolours in the mail. Good to know that my brushes aren't defective. =)
+Natasha Kavanagh I own the Pentel and Sakura brushes. My Pentel brushes will drip if you squeeze the water cartridge, if you don't squeeze they won't drip. I find them harder to control the water as its more of a constant flow. I enjoy the Sakura brush more because you can squeeze those if you want more water.
excuse me, by the way, what do you recommend to me? I don't know what to purchase: Derwent 3 pack, Pentel 3 pack, Sakura 3 pack (short version waterbrushes), or kuretake the 3 Blue of them, or the Zig 4 of them?
+Santiago RUclips Pentel and Kuretake are better. No need to get the sets. Just get the one with biggest brush tip. The big tip is capable of small details too.
I have never before heard anyone explain about the air hole, and why it is needed! Thank you so much for your excellent instruction; I always learn something new when I watch your videos. 👍😊
I never noticed the breather holes before! Thanks. Really useful summary

Wow! This is the first time I have heard about the water holes and how they impact the water. Thank you! Your reviews are always valuable.
The flat brush is designed to have the outer inside cover of the brush removed to make a much bigger bristle wash brush which is great. Try taking that outer plastic off the brush for washes.
Created a video review for the waterbrushes I have
Like Yoda you're speaking? Lol
Dominique Vias Observation, keen.
The Niji brushes nowadays are the Zig H20 brand from Kuretake. They are the same thing.
Very well explained. I am at the point of buying a water brush for the first time, this review is very helpful.

Thank you very much for the info!
Ohhhh my sakura koi waterbrush dosent have breather holes thats why when i wash it out theres pigment in it!!
Wow thanks now I know why my derwent sucks back the pigment, never happened with pentel which I think is medium.
Did you know that on the flat brush the plastic sleeve around the brush comes off to give you longer bristles...try it!
+Eileen Goldenberg Thanks for the tip!
Thank you so much for making all these videos!! They're very informative!! 😊🎨

Ikr?! That palette is awesome! I have been hunting for it but I don't know which he used
Wow.. So many brushes. I want them all :D Thanks for the review on all those brushes.
ian chio Do not buy them all. Just get the good ones, the Pentel and Holbein
How often do you replace your water brushes? I have a pentel but not really happy with it but then I might just prefer my regular round brushes.
Maybe three months to six months depending on how often I use them. The holbein one is the least durable, or maybe because that's the one I use most often.
Great video! I have a question: are there any problems with leaving water inside the water compartment when not using the brushes for a long time?
+Joe Liang It is not really a problem I suppose, unless it starts growing algae. Sometime if you have paint on the brush tip, it will diffuse back into the water compartment, making the water there dirty.
+Teoh Yi Chie Okay, thanks! ^^
Just a quick question....whats the most common size of escoda travel brush people use when urbin sketching
Thanks so much for your really helpful replies! Btw, would you recommend purchasing the enamel box and what paint brands do u like

Holbein does not have stopper. I find it easier to use if you don't squeeze. Water will still flow, slowly.
I see. How do you avoid too much water on your sketches with this brush then?
I try not to press much first. Then I use tissue to dry off excess water.
I don't use waterbrushes already because of this water-always-flowing problem.
I've recently ordered me a 4 pack of the Pentel waterbrushes I'm so excited to try them out
Hello thank you for comparison video. I have had a bunch but either worn out or for me too hardGail new subscriber to squeeze. I never knew Holbein had a water brush ! 😆

can you review the arteza waterbrushes compared to the pentel?
bought the pentel ones and regretted it so much 😭 they can make finer lines than koi, but it's really hard to control the water. even when i don't fill them up with water and just use it as normal brushes, the water retention is very weird
can i put diluted colored water in the pentel brush? will anything bad happen to it?
+Ace Lee Don't think it will be a problem. Just that the pen may leak so be careful.
I can't find the holbein waterbrush please add all the links.
+Santiago RUclips Holbein is difficult to buy. I think they are from Japan. Check eBay.
+Teoh Yi Chie I did, but there no one selling it. I found it anyways but reading your last ,essage about the water I'm gonna think about it first.
I know that this is really off-topic, but I love your accent! You sound like my Singaporean friend. Also, great informative video. Thank you!
+Heggleston Rose Thanksh 😁
Thank you for the video. If no one said, I think you can just clip that plastic bit on the cap of the one. They may mean for you to do this.
your favorities whaterbrush is the Pentel? This is it?
That is great info about the breathing hole!
hi teoh. im thinking of getting a pentel waterbrush just to try it but i dont know which size to get. what is the size closest to size 6 normal brush? thank you!

+Diana Gaitán You can get the Copic markers with brush tips or the Pilot pocket brush pen ruclips.net/video/DZgqjEkYEA8/видео.html
thanks!!!!
you forgot to try the sakura ones, so far I see there are 2 package versions of them, in white and blue plastic bags.
+Santiago RUclips Sakura is not very different from Pentel and Kuretake.
+Teoh Yi Chie oh i see then thank you very much :).
@Teoh Yi Chie please update this. I trust this comment and bought sakura koi. The tip is nothing like Pentel and it leak everywhere. Sakura koi waterbrush is the most disappointed art supply I have bought. Others warned about the leakage but I trusted your channel.

can you make a video about the kuretake blue (s/m/l) ones?
+Santiago RUclips I'm not sure if I'm going to make individual waterbrush reviews. They are all pretty similar except for the Holbein which has much longer bristles and higher water capacity, but bristles wear out faster.
+Teoh Yi Chie understood, thank you.
What do you prefer more the Holbein or the Pentel? I already got the Holbein one but I want to know what is better. :)
+Danna Frilles I prefer Holbein because the brush tip is bigger but I feel that the white bristles wear off faster.
+Teoh Yi Chie OHH THANKSSSS! :D I always use this for painting but the annoying part is that few of the color is permanent in the brush so I can't remove it, I want it to be clean and white. lol xD
+Danna Frilles After going through a few brush pens, you will learn to ignore the stained white bristles. lol
+Teoh Yi Chie Yeh. I spent 10 minutes cleaning the bristles and it did'nt work. I was still a noob 😂 lol
danna frilles: I feel the same way! The staining bothers me too. ☹️
My Kuretake looks exactly like your Niji and so glad it has a breather hole! 😂🤣
Kureake Zig H20 brushes are the same as the Niji ones....they rebranded them I think.
I have some pentel brushes. When I press on the compartment the water comes out of the breather holes. This is not supposed to happen right? Does anyone else have that problem? Also I‘m guessing this is not happening with any of the brushes in the video is it?
It's not suppose to happen. Don't press too hard or the water will rush out from the breather hole. But if I want more water, I just press hard.
It's not suppose to happen. Don't press too hard or the water will rush out from the breather hole. But if I want more water, I just press hard.
Which ones have breather holes? Is that better?
Actually I'm not sure if they are better. Just press slowly regardless of which you use so that the water won't rush out suddenly.
@@teohyc thank you! I'm trying to find what works best before tying, like most people I suppose.
Where did you get the Holbein one?
+victoria garcia I bought it at a local store called Straits Commercial in Singapore.
Singapore based also yes that mean I can find the thing easier if not later so hard to find
Can anyone with a Pentel waterbrush tell me if its normal for water to drip from above the bristles when you apply more than a little bit of pressure to the cartridge?
+Natasha Kavanagh If you do not press it, it should not drip. To control the water, press it lightly.

Great review. Thanks.
Thanks :-)
im new with waterbrush. but im glad i did survey first with ur reviews and some other youtubers. thank you for reviews
+Miss Lenny Cool 😁
excuse me, by the way, what do you recommend to me? I don't know what to purchase: Derwent 3 pack, Pentel 3 pack, Sakura 3 pack (short version waterbrushes), or kuretake the 3 Blue of them, or the Zig 4 of them?
+Santiago RUclips Pentel and Kuretake are better. No need to get the sets. Just get the one with biggest brush tip. The big tip is capable of small details too.
Actually you don't need to push waterbrush to clean . just drag it on tissue few time it cleans up itself
So helpfull! Thanks a lot!!!
What about Kuretake?
I've the Kuretake waterbrush review here www.parkablogs.com/content/waterbrush-comparison-which-best
"the useless clip they stick on the cap." lol
I have the medium size one and I had not noticed that detail.
Thanks for the link.
The pentel water brushes also have a flat.
Singapore based?
Yes?
Omg same
ty!
I thought it was Kuretake, but it's Niji 😂
They are pretty similar
add the direct links to purchase them.
Yeah, you can even set it up with some retailers that you make $$ if they click product links through your vids! Great reveiw, very helpful! Thanks
Great job I had to Subscribe
+Essie Bell Thanks!
I get annoyed when you say bristles or however you spell it it's probably pronounced and brissles
I need to check out those pronunciation youtube videos. lol
Teoh Yi Chie You are fine. Her sentences in English are incorrect, but no one is telling her they are annoyed! 😒😊
