  • The famous story from India of Harishchandra, the king who loses all, including his wife and child in following his dharma, illustrating the commitment to God through Truth. Told by Seattle local Bangalore storyteller extraordinaire Murali Venkatrao, who will carry you to ancient and sacred India.
This was the Wednesday afternoon satsang at Ananda Village during Ananda's 50th anniversary celebration week.
Please note: At 19.48, 31:14 and 31:33 there is a small slip of tongue and Murali said Vishwamitra in lieu of Harishchandra.

Came across this by accident. Very good narration.. people plz do t mistake this to be mythology.. it is history . Great Satya Harishchandra belongs to Ishvaku dynasty just like Shri Rama. Let’s celebrate our history and share it with the world. 🙏

As a westerner initiated into bhakti path i received name Harishchand after this king.. It was given to me by my Satguru ofc., Paramahamsa Vishwananda.
Far i am from ideal of Harishchandra to be honest, these are some crazy times we live in, Kali Yuga, but nevertheless TRUTH is most prominent topic of my life.
As a kid i was always searching and asking myself: What is the truth?? I could not stand people lying and i got into many troubles..
Hearing this story beautifully narrated made me cry so much and gave such beautiful new details and insights... Thank you soo much..

Sir, you have summarized the epic story very short due to time constraint as I understand. it reminded me the forgotten days of my college days 30+ years back in Andhra Pradesh villages (assume the practice was there in other states as well) wherein we friends used to go to Satya Harischandra drama which used to run for many days - these dramas used to happen in the night usually on certain festival times and performed by famous drama actors and people used to wait for their performances year after year.
Harischandra's smasana ghattam (or crematory episode of his son) is the one people used to wait for it especially the conversation between husband & wife used to go on for hours. There wasn't any person who didnt cry as the act was so natural and heavy emotionally.
Eventually, the culture and memories gone.
Nevertheless, Harischandra remained forever in Hindu philosophy and there is no other such parallel personality in the world in terms of truthfulness. Sometimes I wonder why would anyone be so naive sacrificing his luxurious life and comforts.
But his character is so great and he and his wife remained great personalities to rever for generations & for many centuries.
One observation - i remember Harischandra's wife's name is Chandramathi unlike what mentioned by sir. Also Chandramathi's mangalyam (thread worn by married women) is visible to her husband only and Harischandra prompts the lady to give her mangalyam as she doesn't have money and that's how she recognises her husband.
Anycase, thank you for a wonderful story in short duration.

Today's people are very selfish, greedy for wealth and money, must learn from King Harischandra.
      There is none like Harishchandra.
In the end he was rewarded in surrendering his sweet wife, son and his Kingdom from Vishwamitra. That was one of the test taken very harshly, no man has ever been tested like him.

I must bow down to our culture and to Monk Murli for his so enticing explanation of all the stories that contained a moral and ethics!
If the movie HARISHCHANDRA was made in the year 1913.
Anyway, my privilege to hear and know about the great Sanātan dharma from the stories told by revered Murli.

Dear Sir Murali you are a great story teller. To learn complex things in life all we need is a good teacher who can simplify things for simple minded people. And you do a great job at it.
