I own two A80Ls (77 and 83) and they are not dim by any stretch. Too many people who don’t own them say that. Additionally I own an A90J 83 and I’m happy with it as well.

Do you notice that the 83” A80L is brighter than the 77” A80L because of the included heat sink or do you find the brightness levels of both sizes the same? Thanks!

I have the 55 inch A80L in my bedroom and don’t find it at all dim. I mostly watch at night but even during the day (and it’s a pretty bright room) it’s still plenty bright. Couple that with the XR Clear Image processing, I feel I chose a great TV. Does this mean the C3 is not brighter? Probably not. (I haven’t actually seen the C3 and can’t make a conjecture.) But I don’t find the brightness lacking at all in the A80L!

Fellow NU8000 owner - also upgraded over the holidays to s90c. Even did a side by side the first night we got it. For HDR content, especially dark scenes on a dark room, it really is a night and day difference.
After moving the NU from the basement to the living room though, I got to give props to this old edge lit tv. Its bright, things pop, and depending on content, blacks are decent to really good in a regularly lit room. When its bad though, its cant-see-what-im-watching bad.

I'm in a very similar situation regarding picking the A80L vs the C3, although I'm planning for Black Friday 2024, so it'll be the A80M and C4. Obviously, no one's compared these yet (as of Jan '24), but all things being equal, I'd be upgrading from a 9 year old Samsung "LED LCD" 1080p TV (no HDR). My viewing room is dim, and can be darkened, so I'm thinking the brightness difference between the 2 new TVs won't be even close to either new one vs. the old one. Also, the Sony magic has me more excited than the extra brightness of the LG C3/4.
I'm leaning toward the Sony paired with a Panasonic 4K Blu-ray player

Same situation here. I've been holding out too long with upgrading my 2008 1080p Sammy. I just visited the electronic store, Abt, and was overwhelmed and impressed with all the offerings that are out now. Even the Sony X90L looked impressive. The A95L is a fantastic TV but way too much for my budget, and the A80L, C3, and S90C were all amazing from what I saw. The A80L is also my top choice, and I had my mind set on the 77", but then I saw the 83". I'm also waiting to see what it's in line for 2024, but I'm willing to buy a 2023 model if the changes aren't significant enough for 2024. Good luck with whatever you end up with. Cheers

Yeah, but... brightness was an issue with TVs that barely did 150 nits. It's not as much of an issue with TVs that push 1500 nits or higher. Also, the switching times of the panels were an issue... and it isn't for OLED. 3D looked great on my plasma, however the brightness was... well, it was dim. But cutting the S95C brightness in half it's still going to be really bright.

For my 2 cents I will say that size has a quality all its own. We have 4 TVs in the house. One is a 3 year old LG OLED 65”. Another is a high end Sony LED at 75”. Newest TV is a TCL S5 98” which replaced the Sony in the family room. The 4th TV was a $200 55” TCL S4 that I bought refurbished from Walmart several years ago for one of our kids who has since moved out. I put it in the exercise room and it is great for that. My point is that, on paper, the S5 is a cheap TV. For us though the S5 is the best looking TV that I was willing to spend money on. Due to the fireplace location the couch has to go at least 14-15 feet from the TV. After much adjusting the TCL looks quite good. The biggest downside is the limited viewing angles but from the couch or the loveseat it’s fine. It’s bright enough (relatively dark room) and in some ways I prefer the look of it over the Sony and the LG. For me it is much easier to adjust than the others. It definitely handles reflections better than the Sony. The best part is that from Best Buy my entire cost was $2100 including the wall mount and installation. We’ve had it a month and have zero regrets.

Very much disagree that "Most folks didn't like the experience" for 3D. I would argue that most who actually experienced it did but very, very few of the people who bought 3d tv's actually ever watched actual 3D content on it. Had conversation with a number of people who saw mine back then and were wowed. Turned out they, and likely most everyone else, didn't realize the only way to actually watch 3D at the time was buying a 3D player and 3D movies. They simply had their TV doing a 3d effect on 2D content which sucked. An that is the core problem, people didn't experience it because the content was limited to one medium that required them to rebuy movies and the studios were trying to milk it as they were charging 50-100% more for 3D discs. Another issue was of course the studios that saw it as theatrical cash cow and did crappy conversions.

Is the C3's processing really better than the Nvidia Shield Pro's AI Upscaling? I watched some videos of the Nvidia Shield Pro last week (I had no clue it existed before that) and it looks really good. In fact, I was scratching my head that if Nvidia can do that with the Tegra X1+, why aren't my PS5 and XSX doing AI upscaling duty to give me $100,000 TV processing?😀 Any console will run circles around a Trinnov in sound processing so the consoles should run circles around any TV's processing.
But if you want to really see something special, check out Mario Kart on a video comparing the G3, S95C, and A95L. Pause the video to see the craziness - I have some timestamps in the comments... It's amazing how our eyes can fool us that 2 images are identical when one looks like it's from a decade ago. The strangest part - in a blind test, people picked that TV as the best TV.

I recognize that it is an absolute massive jump in both size and quality, but I will not say that this Sony oled is dim at all. Give me an 8K/60 glasses-free 3D that can also convert any native 2D source to 3D. For movies, streaming TV, games, photos, family videos, etc. You listening Sony? I want you guys doing that because I love your special video processing sauce.
Failing that, then you need to do your own high-end version of the Apple Vision Pro with similar hand(& finger)controllable interface and zooming features for most immersive experience. Including panoramic.
And I'd like to be able to go vertical so with the visor, we can pan our heads not just left & right, but up & down when zooming in close. For instance when examining super-highres, medical diagnostic equipment like MRIs and anything else.

I’m still waiting to upgrade and every time I’m about to buy a new TV, I do 2 things. I sit closer and watch some content and realize how much easier it is to move 2 feet back and see the full image. I also put an Oled laptop on my lap that has no brightness issues full screen and compare them. The Tcl have better picture out of the box, better HDR due to 2000+ nits and Dolby Vision but it doesn't perform as the OLED when showing something like Windows starfield screen saver. Then there are some blooming. But who watches crap like that anyway? 😊
The bigger drawback is that I've noticed vertical bands from the backlight. They only show up slightly on solid colors like a blue sky and aren't noticable in regular scenes.
