    for a home job, this is really well done. One suggestion I gotta throw in is when masking the wheel openings, I've had success with back-taping the inner lip of the entire wheel opening, then sticking the paper/plastic to the tape. There's no overspray in the wheel opening and tire area & it just makes the job look more professional.

    you did a good job. Too many pricks on here saying you did this wrong, you did that wrong, and probably have never tried to paint a car themselves. For a back yard job this is as good as it gets really. Great work man. You've given me the confidence to spray my project car. And probably many others..

      Since it appears that you have never painted a car, how did you determine the OP is right, and the critics are wrong?? Perhaps they want to ensure you don't make mistakes they see here. I was looking for full color-change techniques promise in the title only to find half the important details are not even discussed! Why bother? And as someone who has painted vehicles--in and out of work --for 40 years, I GUARANTEE YOU there are far better videos out there for beginners.

      @@FisherCatProductions Professional car painter for Audi / Volkswagen for 10+ years here, and i second this. The result on this car was average at best, and that is taking the setup and conditions into consideration. Lot of orange peel, and the painter not wearing proper protection is a big issue for me. Snorting paint fumes is not good for you.

      Added humidity can mess with the paint. I've run into issues a few times on that. I hose down the floor and scrub with a dish soap solution and a broom, then pressure wash my floor. Let it dry for a day and then shoot paint.

    He was learning .. if you watch his other videos he is basically showing people as he learns.. he has come a long way since the start. At least he has taken the time to share. I think that’s a good effort for a beginner. Also this is Australia, you guys in US are used to much cheaper prices ... so 1000 respray is cheap for us for a good job compared to 3000

    Yes a swirl remover is a better option after using the cutting compound. It is a finer grade of compound that will remove scratches left from the first cutting compound. Then the polish should go on.

  • @customspraymods
    @customspraymods  12 лет назад

    @RAJSTA81 Hey thanks for watchin.. You might benefit from clearing black or a dark colour to give it some depth but otherwise there is no benefit to clearing a solid colour. Just sand it and buff it. It will look good.

  • @customspraymods

    For someone that enjoys working on their car and takes pride in a job they have done themselves, the price is worth it. Dont forget you will get to keep the compressor, the spray gun and the Buffing machine for future jobs. These items alone account for half the price mentioned.

    @bigboy5998 use a 2pack matte finish. Either the sem hot rod black or the alsa soft feel clear. Using an acrylic matte finish will scuff really easily and can crack and fade over time. hope it goes well for ya.

  • @customspraymods
    @customspraymods  12 лет назад

    @thabliz77 it could have come out rough for a number of reasons maybe gun setup. Mixing ratios. Type of thinners. Also of its really hot the paint can almost dry as it hits the surface. Try wind in all the nozzles on your spray gun then wind the fluid out about 3 turns. The fan about 15cm wide and the air about 45psi use 60 parts thinners to 40 parts clear and do about 4 coats.Try sand back the car with 800g and give it another coat of color and clear. Dont dust it on try and be slow and smooth

  • @SatansSpatula
    @SatansSpatula 12 лет назад

    When I painted my motorcycle years ago, I thouroughly swept and washed the entire driveway (including the retaining wall). When I was ready to paint, I sprayed down the surrounding surfaces and bushes. I ran the risk of increasing moisture in the air, but it really helped trap dust and pollen.
    There's nothing worse than getting something stuck in your first layer of clear, only to spot it after your third or fourth layer! Of course, a light sanding between layers helps, too.

  • @customspraymods
    @customspraymods  12 лет назад

    @xcharles1 you can do everything the same but you only need to paint the outside of the car if the inside door jambs are in good enough condition.

  • @mycomputersaddicted
    @mycomputersaddicted 11 лет назад

    By cutting back so often and several times it generally ensures any light dust or debris that settles is removed... this is great... can't wait to get another cheap project car to have a crack at...

  • @shifty1016
    @shifty1016 12 лет назад

    I painted a fender in my backyard. Primed it and knocked the primer down with sandpaper. Shot color and then clear. Orange peel everywhere. Then, I sanded it and sanded it and sanded it... didn't turn out too bad for having AutoZone lacquer and a Harbor Freight gun...done outside. Unless you're Chip Foose, you're gonna have orange peel.
    I should give you a break, though. You probably missed the sanding at 16:34. And you probably missed the previous comment about it.

  • @customspraymods
    @customspraymods  12 лет назад

    Yes thats right it is a finer cut. Yeah a hand polish should last about 6 to 8 months then will need to be reapplied. A spray painter would use a 2K clear that dries glossy. So there is no need to cut and buff. But Most of the time to get a really glossy finish they will cut and buff.

  • @customspraymods
    @customspraymods  12 лет назад

    @PureDeer95 this car is used for VG Auto Paints free lessons the students have a go buffing it and repairing and blending so its never really finished.

  • @customspraymods
    @customspraymods  12 лет назад

    Yes humidity could be a reason for that, it will eventually go away. You can sand with 800g wet and re apply the clear. If you can heat the cans in warm water before using the paint.

  • @customspraymods
    @customspraymods  12 лет назад

    @ugkistheclick Hy mate, thanks for watching. A good way to make sure the new colour isnt noticeable is to blend the paint. First use the grey scotchbrite with some flatting paste over the whole panel next to your newly painted parts. Then overlap the paint into the panel without going to the edge. Start small then spray a larger area with each coat. After 3 or 4 coats clear the whole panel. I will be doing a video on this but ill post a video reply of one that VG Auto Paints did.

    As long as you get coverage with your paint and enough clearcoat on. You can always sand and buff it to look glossy and smooth. I have seen clearcoat that is really bad and you would think it needs to be redone. But a good sand and buff brought it up maaad.

  • @customspraymods
    @customspraymods  12 лет назад

    Hello, yes wet sanded the car with 600g, using a suitable primer after that is the best option but paint will stick to the 600g sanded area.

    if its not a single stage paint, the clear coat will give it the depth and shine that you see on most cars. it will make your job look alot better with it. but its all up to you!!

  • @customspraymods
    @customspraymods  11 лет назад

    That can be caused by smashing on the clearcoat too heavy and not waiting 10 to 15min between coats. What is happening is the solvent is trying to escape and causing tiny pinholes as it does. By waiting longer between coats and applying a medium coat of clear should eliminate this problem. Hope this helps

  • @KryssTheBeastKross
    @KryssTheBeastKross 12 лет назад

    yea thats true. but after each coat you can wet sand, going from 1200 grit up to 2000 after the last coat of color. then the same with the clear. 24 hours after the paint has been laid, you can then buff it out and polish to get a very clean and perfect shine with depth!

    the color is simple. The clear is where you have to be careful, as you noticed he had someone come in to do his clear, if you go to fast you will get a grainy finish, but if you go to slow, you will get runny paint, just practice on something first, to get your pace, but it is not as hard as it looks, the only way you learn is by doing it

    Well not if you already have an air compressor and spray gun as well as a few other basic materials that I'm sure most people have or can borrow from friends. For just materials and not tools, it should cost around $300-400 for a full respray with primers, clear, and polish. Of course that can vary depending on the quality of paint, size of car, etc. But $1000 is definitely on the high side for a DIY job.

  • @fubarinwar
    @fubarinwar 11 лет назад

    I would say 25 Gallon is the smallest for painting a complete car. over 40 gallon is highly recommended. If smaller you will have to wait between panels and it will cause losing the wet edge and consequently dry spray on clear. Good luck.

    I am in the states also and I have seen paint jobs that go that high and even higher. A friend just dropped $8k on a paint job for his truck and it really shows. I have had a $1k paint job on a car that was in an accident and it looked great at first but it didn't last. I guess it just depends but I usually go with you get what you pay for. I like learning how to do things myself though, really lessens the chance of getting fucked over by someone else too.
