  • This is my favorite AR platform ever. I love the carry handle and the triangular handguards. This rifle can shoot either 223 or 556 and has a 20 inch barrel.

My dad still has his SP1 that he bought new in 1977... In 1984 he had it "drilled"... I grew up with a legal happy switch. It was good times.
I can't, at 46 years old, imagine owning a gun, and just being able to spend a few bucks and making it legally full auto.
I would have been broke had I been old enough to buy my own toys in the early 80s.

I have an original 1981 and of all of my AR's it is still my favorite to this day. It definitely out-shoots all of the new "Gucci" carbine custom builds with the lights and optics that the kids love to bring out to the range these days.

Cool video brother, and you are two years younger than me lol. Seriously I just inherited my dads 70SP1 a year ago and haven"t fired it yet since I was a teen. These are beautiful rifles and it"s pretty sacred to me, but the best part about it is every time I look at it I remember my dad and how much he loved that rifle. God bless.

I understand what you mean about the 1st gen of a gun. Also get owning something that's the same age as you. When it comes to it not having all the bells and whistles of the new guns ..it's sort of like owning a classic car in that the whole point is that it's from another time. IMO the best thing is to keep it original and build the state of the art version so you have both ends of the spectrum.

I inherited a 75 sp1, Vietnam bayonet/sling and a box of those 20re military mags new in paper.
One thing about alot of those 20rd mags, especially the early military ones.
They are thin, soft and made to be disposable.
I have a couple I like to use but the rest are collectors items IMHO.

6 Years ago, I completely dumb lucked on a MINT! 1971 SP1 at an estate auction.
They held up the SP1 and the auction started at $100,....I asked to look at it, they stopped the bidding, (ugly looks from everyone) looked it over and thought "I'm buying a fake, airsoft, or a unicorn." One of the mags is still in the packaging, maybe one box of ammo ran through it.
$500 out the door, when I ran the SN on Colts site, I literally could not comprehend it was a 1971, its nearly new, I had been looking for ANY SP1 for nearly 30 years.
The sale was to settle the estate of a Vietnam vet, shame I don't know his name, but THANK YOU!

I looked for 30 years after I got out of the Army. I found one with less than a hundred rounds through it. They first time I fired it. I picked up a 20rd mag and slapped myself side the head. I had never fired an AR without tapping the mag on my helmet. Old habits are hard to break!

@@grayharker6271 When I was in Iraq 05-07, I showed the kids that trick, but modified it to tapping the mag on our sapi plates, or the steel toe boots the Navy mandated we wear.
