- Top 10 Tax-Friendly States
Did you know people like saving their money? For some reason, people like to pay less for things. If you are normal that is a no-brainer. If you are my wife, well the phrase money is no object comes to mind. When it comes to money in the united states it has gotten better for the country almost every quarter since 2010.
The economy is looking better for workers these days too. Unemployment is low, job growth is solid and wages are growing. This country has jobs and qualified workers. About 10 years ago you had to take what you could get when it came to working. For a lot of workers these days you have a handful of companies to choose from. Sometimes to take a good job you might have to move to another state. But before you accept a job offer in another state, make sure you check out the cost of living in your prospective employer's city and state. Look at the cost of housing, and you should do some research on the state and local taxes, and how much they plan on ripping you off for.
In this video, Suki calculated what it would look like for a married couple that rakes in about $150K a year in each state. She gave me about 13 pages that I will oversimplify and add a few strange comments. So if you are looking for the most tax-friendly state
Thanks for checking out the channel. I hope you enjoyed today's video. If there is a state, city or town you'd like us to do a video about let us know in the comment section.

I'm amazed with USA geography. Deserts, forests, ice glaciers, beaches.. So beautiful
True, but that comes with lots of bad weather. Like most of the worlds tornadoes.
Totally agree
dudewheresmyjunk Thank goodness am I right!
I do like that we can freely move about the most diverse environments on the planet. We literally have it all here in the USA. Mountains, forests, deserts, ice lands, islands/tropics, plains, tens of thousands of lakes/rivers, and the list goes on. You can’t find a climate/environment on earth that can’t be found in some part of the US or our territories.
dudewheresmyjunk Yes, territories. Before you go off crying about that word, remember this. No current US territory is interested in leaving the US (losing access to federal assistance, our military, citizenship, etc..) Maybe a few people in them, but those people are a minority there.
10) New Hampshire no sales tax, local high property taxes.
9) Arizona, 4.5% tax rate, sales tax 11th highest in usa
8) North Dakota, 2.9% income tax, 6.8% sales tax
7) South Dakota, zero income tax.
6). Alaska, zero income tax, no sales tax. Lowest gas tax
5). Washington state, no state income tax. Sales tax 9% high gas tax
4).. Florida, no income tax
3). Tennessee, limited income tax, no taxes if over 100 years old, 9.5% sales tax
2). Nevada, no income tax
1) Wyoming, no income tax, low gas tax
No state Tax in TN either
Alaskans also get a dividend check annually from gas/oil resources👀
Where is Delaware, a tax free state
Was expecting Alabama, Mississippi , Arkansas and West Virginia to be up there due to low property tax
Where's texas. No income tax
I moved to Las Vegas Nv from Los Angeles Ca and never looked back. No state tax, low property tax, lower sales tax, I love it.
Without watching this
California will not be on this list
lol I'm in California and you're absolutely right. I was thinking the same thing.
TheAncientAndreios your sales tax is 9.75% but I’m sry California doesn’t even come close to NY in overall taxation taken out of the house hold income. 13% of everyone’s income goes on average towards taxes so if you make 100k a year your really only seeing excluded from taxes 87k
@@Daddyvader7 Yeah. It varies by city. In mine it's 9.5% and I've seen 10.25%. That's good to know. Thanks. We should all use gold and silver bullion and crypto-currencies as money instead. Tax-free. :)
You’re hatred for California is overflowing. California is not that expensive to live in unless you you’re within 1 hour from the coast. Sure. They have the best beaches in the country and we have a lot of people in this country that make good money that will pay for it. Live inland and you can buy a nice house for $300K to $400k. I hope you don’t think $300k for a house is expensive.
AZ66GT350 Mustang hatred for California no
Hatred for California government? YES
This is list I have been waiting for. Paying less tax is always a priority.
Sounds like a stupid priority when government workers, roads, police, libraries, and parks are funded through taxes. Guess it’s good you aren’t in charge.
@@CaliGirlJade All those things are necessary and I am not opposed to paying tax to cover them. The problem is that most governments are horribly inefficient. With the right government, you could have all of those things, and more, and still pay less taxes.
I just hate that I work 75 hours a week and only get paid for 40, then I still have to pay property tax, sales tax, fuel tax, tire tax, and so on. I'm not saying I could fix it, but there are people who could.
Cowboy Xavier Well I agree that in a perfect world we could do all that and still pay less in taxes. But yeah I hate how much corruptions fills Washington and politics in general
It's getting more n more yearly. The survival rate will slowly diminish.
Timmy Turner and half the money vanishes
Good thing you aren’t in charge because you are oblivious to the funneling of money in 60% of local governments .... Detroit itself is pocketing atleast 4 million +
Thanks Briggs! This was a similar conversation we were having on your last video. Its important to understand which states tax income, property, ss, ssdi, pensions, Inheritance etc. 👍👍
Kiplinger. com usually runs an article on that every year. I'm presuming that if a state taxes Social Security, they also tax SSDI.
Used to live in NYC and now live in Gilbert, AZ. Since I know how to avoid sunburning myself, I can say that it's tgreat for me. As a tax accountant, I love their charitable contribution tax credit.
dkmenace1990 Great to hear!
A good friend moved to Gilbert from Chicago a decade ago and his only regret was not doing it sooner
What I would love to see is an update to this list for pandemic-strapped states having to reinstate taxes to make up for revenue shortfalls over the downturn; how many of those shoestring budget states now have to bleed their citizens for the crime of not being able to move?
Love your videos. Feature request: when you are talking about a state and doing drone flyovers or other views, can you add a subtitle with the name of the city/town shown?
Thanks Briggs I needed this for planning my future move? Love the education + humor!🤗😉💖
Thanks for watching.
I love your sense of humor.

Naomie Moore Agreed!

CXK YES we did considering I'm thinking about leaving my state (Connecticut) for a more tax friendly one because of the ridiculously high taxes here. They tax everything here---and when I say everything I mean EVERYTHING 😔😔.

@@cocotaveras8975 Id say South Dakota. Summers are great untilllll ya that winter season brrr. Sure your winters suck just as much tho.
Phoenix Rising YES they do. But sometimes I like it because if we get bad enough weather NO SCHOOL 😁😁😁😁---So I say BRING ON THE WINTER.
I think in Wyoming they watch paint dry and grass grow for excitement.
There are some advantages like in winter just keep your food outside and you can turn off the freezer. Now if you left something out side and find it missing that was in your yard like say your car you might want to look in Nebraska or South Dakota for it as the wind might had been blown it there.
You are amazing Briggs, thanks for another great video!
Thank you for this video. I very much appreciate it. From Anaheim California 😊💕💞💟👍
Lots of stats and percentages to juggle along with tax laws. Great job.
We were looking into New Hampshire to get closer to my wife's family who live in Rhode Island until I researched both the property tax and the electricity cost....both were nearly twice the rate of Idaho and West Virginia. We finally decided to move to Morgantown, West Virginia, which is right below the Pennsylvania border in the Spring of 2021.
Morgantown is the next Burlington Vermont city.
👍👍 great information as always.
Thanks Sonny Girl
Thanks Briggs! I love your videos!!!

Great video Briggs! You had some very helpful information. You should do a video about the states/cities with the most thriving millennials
Dimitrius Harrington Great idea 👍👍
Great information Great job 👍
Thanks man. I liked it
I love ur videos! I wish u did 1-50 ratings since most the places I’m looking to move to are kinda average in a lot of areas. Typical the cheapest places to live have before weather or lack jobs or there’s some other reason they are undesirable so on soooo many things I’m trying to find something in between! ^_^
People in Wyoming may not mind if they ban cars but if they try to ban pick up trucks there would be an insurrection.
It costs over $1000 every year to renew your car registration.
They really hate modern transportation here....lol
Partner, you have that right...
@Mustafa Alam
Subway?
We barely got an airport last year.
1 daily flight out of Cheyenne.
Everyone has to go to Denver for normal air transportation.
@Mustafa Alam
Yes. Wyoming doesn't have an airport.
The one here in Cheyenne opened a year ago. Offers 1 flight to Dallas per day, one return flight from Dallas per day.
Denver Colorado is our closest airport.
Wyoming has many airports lol wtf are you talking about? And I’ve never paid 1000$ for car registration.
I always appreciate your videos. You always add humor, wit, facts, and keep it efficient. Gotta love them haters. Stay true to what you want to do and say what you feel. You’re entertaining to the open minded.
Briggs your videos are awesome.
Thanks Briggs👍👏🤓💖 You forgot the property & death tax for the cowboy State. Come on....🤓
You forgot to add the downside of Wyoming tax.
House prices are higher than average...for example, 400k would get you a new 3 bedroom house.
Property taxes are average...but when you factor that you are paying more for a house...it reflects on the tax appraisal.
Also....8-9 months of winter increases utility costs.
And every year to renew your car registration, it costs over $1000 .
Thank you for the info. My god. That car registration fee is just theft.
@ReddNekk13
You are right
......I purchased 3 new vehicles on 3 consecutive years.....that's why I thought it was the norm.
But on the second year of the last one purchased.....the registration was $170.
What a relief....lol.
I was ready for another $1000.
But overall, still the worst place I have lived my entire life.
Arrrgh, the "personal property tax"...
Seemed too good to be true.
8-9 cold months? That's a bit extreme
@@trwoody1
You get used to it.
Some nicer temperatures squeeze in between sometimes.
But the property tax is still super low.
My point was that it could've been even lower if the properties were not priced as if they were in Denver.
A few weeks ago I was quoted $1100 combined, to renew the registration on my 2 vehicles.
Missouri's personal property tax was ridiculous. You could own a piece of junk to drive & it would be hundreds of dollars every year, if newer, could be upwards of $2,000. Left for Texas, $35-$65 per year. Property taxes are much higher, but we homestead & it lowers it significantly. I would never live in a decent sized town in Texas, they HAVE to have a university-sized football stadiums for every high school, property taxes are atrocious, places like Dallas suburbs, Houston, San Antonio, etc....
100% Briggs , I thoroughly enjoyed your video here , I love the way you speak and the sound of your voice ♥️
Nicely done.
That intro, watching it after COVID I'm thinking to myself "oh boy get ready"
Super underrated state: South Dakota. No income tax, Sioux Falls has a great job market, and the cost of living is really cheap
I love South Dakota would love to move soon from NYC
Great video!
I found your channel and I’m loving your videos. Can you do a Top 10 Green living/friendly states or cities?
That’s not how the tax laws work in Oregon/Washington. You can’t live in WA and work in Oregon without getting taxed, you pay income in whatever state you are generating income in. That’s why the real tax avoiders live and work in Vancouver and do all their shopping in Oregon.
And yr avg daily commute time is? Time tax in effect.
@@videogalwatch they're literally just a river apart lol
Exactly this; why Vancouver is not the largest city in Washington state and hasn't drained Portland of citizens boggles my mind. Hell, even Canadians know about that trick; Linus of LTT fame joked once about the only reason to go to WA was to drive to shop in Portland.
@@Shalefist Yeh, I thought the same. I don't think that I can buy a car in Oregon and get a Washington tag without some kind of obstacle.
@@howellwong11 there are forms for that you'd have to fill out, either at time of purchase or at tax time, to account for taxes skipped on for buying things out of state. Only usually applies to big ticket items, and most states have similar, reciprocal rules. However, depending on the math, it might still be cheaper even with deferred tax payments included (since you can find ingenious ways to shuffle the costs around on your taxes). There's always the commercial route, and I'm sure other deductions like 401k or charity contributions can easily eat the difference (assuming a certain income and expense cost equals out the difference, of course).
california taxes so much it wouldn't surprise me if they taxed the amount of oxygen you breath.
Please don't give the California government any bad ideas, they have enough of thier own.
believe it or not we actually already do have something of that nature in place
If you can’t afford the taxes here then go be broke in another state. Taxes take care of the place around you and government spends it on basic day to day operations and we have way more amenities like parks, roads etc to maintain.
@@CaliGirlJade shut the hell up timmy turner you dont have to worry about jackshit with your fairy god parents. plus all of this taxpayer money is just going straight into the corrupt politicians pockets, where im living these roads are being maintained by a 5th grade class or something because one road that i frequently commute was tattered before i can remember and was PARTIALLY fixed a year ago. not to mention how so many things are under construction but stay under construction for year/years.
ONLY STUPID IDIOTS LIVE IN CALIFORNIA.........LEAVE WHILE U CAN.........
No taxes on products here in Fairbanks but go 15 min south to North Pole and they do. The only gas tax that sucks is diesel. They put an additive for winter in it so it doesn't gel up and that makes the price go up 30 cents or so. Great video!!!
Hey nick. love your videos, How about making a video on the states with the least rules and regulations most property rights thanks
I would like to have seen business taxes included for us entrepreneurs but still a good list.
"You may freeze to death in the winter, but that's a small price to pay for low taxes." Couldn't agree more.
It was too big a price for us. We moved from NH to FL. It's a trade off, for sure.
@@iignorerepliesfrombores4010 How's the humid heat? Where else did you look?
@@coopergates9680 Actually, we went on the road with a camper, volunteering from NH to Kentucky
to Mississippi, TX, Iowa, and PA.
Our last stop was North Florida where our money from the sale of our NH house ran out. Had to settle down and get respectible.
The summers here are rough. After living in Greenville, SC during our college years, I think I'd pick that area for a milder climate and cultural and recreational activities.
Gas is super cheap in SC, as well.
@@iignorerepliesfrombores4010 Greenville is relatively near a little town I wrote down for SC (Pickens), though SC is low on my list as I expect it's still toasty and humid in the summer. I think I'd prefer certain places in TN or NC that are at higher elevation and thus cooler. I did write down Asheville (not super far from Greenville anyway).
@@coopergates9680 I'm guessing TN
is cheaper to live in than NC, If that's an issue for you. Unless you want to have quicker access to the coast, then it's NC. Good luck!

love love love the video and channel. Just wondering if having the state in question floating across screen for respective state info bc it kinda get confusing when trying to take notes to try and compare....who knows maybe it's just not that important....thanx for the information
I just thought about this. Could you do the US counties with the best taxes? I could be wrong, but I think there are actually some places where you could avoid almost any local or state taxes(unincorporated boroughs of Alaska...)

This was a great list. Looks accurate
I almost fell out of my chair when you put Washington on the list.
Stand up to the Internet Bullies I believe that is California! Texas ain't even bad unless we talking about property taxes!
@Stand up to the Internet Bullies in king county there a sugar, soda, vice tax. Our gas tax is high. There's a tax for using plastic bags in several areas
Stand up to the Internet Bullies Air Tax? Did they legalize pot where you live, Dude?
@Stand up to the Internet Bullies Only high Tax in Texas is Property, and it's not even as bad as I am typing this comment in Illinois. Since 2018 property tax has jumped up by 30% and the gas tax has doubled.
Master killua
I know you have plenty of comments to read, I have a top-10 request. I am a snowbird person you know what that is. How about doing a top 10 places that are friendly to RV people and a top 10 that are not friendly to RV people. I know there are states and towns that welcomed us. I'm enjoying the lack of state income tax in Reno. I'll stop typing, but Emerald Bay is on the California side of Tahoe...couldn't resist! Keep the great videos coming!
You make me laugh. I like your humor
"Wyoming has the lowest beer tax in the country"... wait what😳🤯
Can you do a list of top states for homeowners? I own a starter home in California and plan on selling the home and buying a house for cash in another state.
You should leave California. Find a state you like. Take a road trip and look around. That’s what we did. We are heading to eastern Texas or Oklahoma. We are putting our ranch house in California on the market I. Spring and leaving this expensive hell hole.

Property tax in Wyoming is very low as well and social security income is not taxed either.
My hubby and I are looking to retire in Wyoming. Tired of being ripped off in Colorado!!!
Property tax is average...but house prices are insanely high....so you end up paying taxes on that inflated price.
I bought a $350k new build 4 bedroom that would cost $225k in TX or FL.

For shopping, food, entertainment, we have to leave the State.
I don't think I'm benefiting from living here.

@@Dangic23 I agree, prices are high for what you get and it may be too cold in the winter as well. May not be worth it in the long run.
@S S I heard it was not too bad if the vehicle is over 7 years old, yearly license fee should be enough and the older a vehicle is the lower the fee should be.
If you've ever been hanging out in Jonesboro for awhile and want to go somewhere it's Memphis Tennessee. Good video had to watch the last half of it twice.

How about one on states that have the most areas without building codes? There's quite a few people who would like to build their own off grid houses unconventionally, i.e. cob, earthbag, etc.. that have problems finding land in areas that let them build.
Gypsy B Great idea 👍👍
I miss almost everything about living in Wyoming. I’m in Georgia now..The only thing I don’t miss was the extreme cold. I had no problem paying a little more taxes and leaving behind the amazing scenery in order to enjoy the warmer weather

Briggs, do you have an opinion on Van life?
I do. And I have been tossing around some video ideas for a couple months.

Also in Alaska in certain localities if you are 65 or over you get a pretty good tax exemption on your primary residence.
I have really enjoyed your channel I uaually watch on TV so can't comment :) I am in WA ans am always interested when you talk about us, sadly this year the governor wants to add state income tax, .30 to gas tax UGH!!! lovfe the channel I am retired and always enjoy videos about that, cheapest places to live etc I would love to see one for low cost beach towns or at least affordable for a retiree :)
When I did these calculations about 10 years ago, the total tax for everything across all states was a lot closer than I thought it would be when disposable income, amenities, probability of success are considered. Hey, they got to get their money somewhere. It depends on what is important to those paying the taxes.
For example, Taxachusetts high taxes and their spending of those high taxes in all the areas needed for high paying companies to be created and thrive (schools, world class universities, world class hospitals, research, medicine, arts, startup, financing, etc etc etc) now has the highest income per capita of any state. Mississippi has lower taxes and none of the business creating amenities, thus the lowest income per capita. Everything is a trade off. A person can always move.
A person can game then tax system by not needing certain amenities and exploit the areas some states do not tax (like no schools in retirement towns).
Bc Brett Farve steals all the Money

it could be property or sales taxes

Exceptional job! Its no coincidence that some of those States are phenomenal for opening a business, anonymity, trusts, etc...
Can u rank all state taxes 1-50! Plzzzz I’m weighing out crime vs weather vs crime for where I wanna live!
Usually less crime will be in the northern states except their cities.
Pauly P Yeah I know that but the sucky thing is is if you wanna good paying job you’ve got a work in the city and not to mention all the snow they get!!! It really sucks most of the safe places or the cold places!! 😬

NWA is booming. Little crime and is spread out. They only get maybe 6-8" of snow all yr. Believe it or not, Madison MS and Oxford MS is nice from experience.
