  • I'm excited to share my latest project with you. I have a big show coming up. With collectors interested in larger pieces while also having customers with lower budgets, its important to me to provide works at as many price points as possible. To meet both needs, I decided to make smaller artworks using Pantone postcards. I have decided to mount them on wood and this video will cover that process as well.
    For abstract collage pieces, I rely heavily on my colour theory and layout skills to create these pieces, and sometimes the process isn't perfect the first time. I trust my intuition and continue to experiment until I find the right combination. I'm excited to give new life to scraps that would have been discarded in the past.
    I will also try out multiple glues to see what works best to paste the collage to the wood panels.
    I'm grateful for the opportunity to showcase my work at my upcoming show in April. I hope you enjoy the creation of the first 10 smaller works.

    Thank you Flanzella for taking your videos to the next step. I find most do not include the details of finishing a piece. I really appreciate your taking the time to show us how you prepared the wood blocks and tried the different gluing techniques. I think finishing is a neglected area and there is so much to learn. Thank you so much!!!!

    I'm obsessed with the Red Plum piece. Using these Pantone cards are a cohesive base is such a great idea! I once had someone say to me they thought collage took skills from improv and having that "yes, and..." mindset. Grabbing an image to use in a piece because it happens to be right next to your workspace--going with the flow from what you stumble upon and trying it in places. Does that resonate with you at all?

    • @flanzella
      @flanzella  Год назад +1

      I'm so glad you like that one!
      That definitely fully resonates with me deeply! After going back and watching my process videos, I notice a lot of the time I change the narrative / direction I was going because of something sitting on my desk. As I say in this video, collaging is problem solving, and problem solving is improv! You have the be flexible to new opportunities. 😀

    I love working on wood. Believe it or not, a bag of rice is super for weighing down collages. I use one when I’m collaging on mixed media backgrounds with layers of texture underneath. Just lay it out over top dispersing the the rice in its bag evenly til your collage is dry. Works great. Your pieces are coming out super!

    I'd also recommend white woodglue. We used it in architecture school for models a lot. Glues woods, papers and cardboard AND it dries clear. You can also carefully scrape it off the wood if anything spills over. Since the cards are a bit thicker I think it could work really well. It doesn't smell, it's quite sticky but adjustable for a little while.
    But your method seems to have worked as well. Love the idea of the little cards 👍🏻👍🏻

    Leah this is a great take on the Pantone challenge. Ihave tried it a few times using the Box of 100 Pantone poscards. But have never thought to tackle the pantone collage with collage,but watching you create brilliant pieces on the postcards has inspired me to do this challenge again. I did actually just get a set of the postcards (this will be my forth set) A lot of my work is postcard size anyway I like working on a smaller scale.Colaging on a smaller scle could be challenging. I love that you used the colours of the postvards to inspire the pieces you used to create each collage,and using negatiive pieces is an inspired idea too.I hope the show is a success for you and your work finds new homes with people. A great way to use up your scraps and smaller pieces. The completed postcardslook amazing. I am going to push myself and use all 100 cards in the set,but you have definitly inspired me. I have a feeling people will love the pantone pieces at your art show.(matt)

    A couple quick suggestions, 1) maybe spray the paper not the wood because the area around the edge that is not covered with paper might pick up hair and can stay sticky or react to humidity) use some parchment paper between the piece and any other surface
    That said I really like your pieces. I have to get better about saving scraps. I just have so much paper that I'm afraid of becoming a hoarder and never using it up lol. I guess there's always masterboards for backgrounds and pieces to put negatives over the top

    • @flanzella
      @flanzella  Год назад

      Thank you, these are such great suggestions. It's always a learning process. Definitely try out using your scraps, it feels like a whole new kind of art ☺️ to avoid "hoarding" I try to use the scraps from recent pieces and if they don't work I just throw them out.

    I try to use dry adhesive whenever possible. I do like UHU glue stick a lot, but for larger, more uniform pieces (like sticking your collages down onto the wood, for example) I use double-sided signmaker’s tape. The product I use is acid free, very durable, and comes in different widths, up to 4” wide, I believe. I generally use the 2” width. The only down side is that once you stick something down, it is DOWN. There is no window of time at all to move it around. I get it from Amazon.

    • @flanzella
      @flanzella  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks for sharing, I am definitely intrigued to give it a try. I guess this is where the wallpaper glue may work better in terms of being able to move it around after. Next round of these Pantone collages will be a big experiment of different adhesives!

    Really enjoyed seeing your progress! Thanks for sharing. Can you do a video on how you set or seal finished products ? Also with the bigger pieces, do you frame them or put them on a hard backing ?

    • @flanzella
      @flanzella  Год назад

      For sure. I've mentioned it in a few videos but could definitely do a video on my finishes. For papers I use a fixative to seal it that is UV protection since these papers were not meant to last long with sun exposure. For larger ones, I mount on wood and then resin the top usually. I so far have framed the artworks vs a hard backing.

    This video came at the perfect time, I recently got some paint sample cards similar to the Pantone ones, AND I was given some wooden tiles similar to your pieces! I haven't jumped into using either yet. My collage style is very similar to these pieces you've made, more about shape and colour and texture than telling a story. It's nice to see examples!

    • @flanzella

      Wonderful! What are the chances! Give it a try. I am even thinking of putting resin on them to finish them off. 😀 Hope you are able to experiment!

    • @KyraThomsen
      @KyraThomsen Год назад

      @@flanzella Resin could be cool! I've been trying to google what people use for decoupage (on furniture) because I don't currently seal my artworks in anything 🤔 I'm sure it'll be trial and error! Good luck with yours!

    • @flanzella
      @flanzella  Год назад +1

      I seal mine with a workable fixate to protect for UV and such but it definitely doesn't preserve it for keeping the pieces attached. An acid free / archival glue will help but I have only been able to experiment for a few years. I worry about yellowing over time and exposure to light.

    I love working small in analog collage too. How do you organize your negative-shape pieces and keep them from tangling? Do you find that your mood or surroundings influence your compositions, colors or choice of material? Or do you have preconceived ideas/themes/stories in mind? So enjoyed this video and will like and subscribe.

    • @flanzella
      @flanzella  11 месяцев назад

      Hi! I am glad you also like working on the little collages. As for keeping the negatives non tangled, I generally have a bin and separate them with papers and then lay them out. When I am lazy, they all go in a big bin though! I like to not keep too many but enough to work with. I find this keeps me from becoming overwhelmed.
      I am definitely an "internally motivated" artist unless working on commission or a certain theme. I'm quite imaginative and like to focus on the pages in front of me guiding my inspiration versus finding it in my every day. That said, to make my best work, I need to be out doing things and not just cooped inside.
      Thank you for subscribing and liking! 😀
