- Cant even describe how excited I am to share the first episode of my new video series, A Pretty Normal Day, with the incredibly talented collage artist Luis Martin!!!

Hi Luis, love your art and so enjoyed this video. I’ve been painting for a while but am really getting interested and excited about collages. I’m having fun with the process and was thinking maybe I would bring some to our local gallery and shops to sell as I do my art. If I may ask, I’m just wondering about selling collages with pictures of people or things from magazines and books, some say we can’t do that because of copyrights, could you share your opinion or knowledge on this.

I remember as a Child noticing that Left handed people were always more Artistic .. so many years later I started to do things like cleaning with my left hand to kick start my Creative juicy side of my brain ...and the same with Dyslexic People as well I feel it is a SUPER POWER!! I am also a Witch ..everything is Sacred and everything is Energy!! I love the idea of using Our obstacles as PLATFORMS!!! thanks for introducing us to Luis Martin what a GEM!
Luis, you are speaking for me. My studio is my safe place. When I am there, no other place exists. It's where I can be me; feel safe, creative and in another world. When I am in the world of collage, I sit at my table surrounded by bits and pieces of color, having no particular piece of art in mind. And then it starts to come together. Voila! Keep creating. Talent should not be wasted.

My daughter and I are both dyslexic too. Mainstream would say it's a disadvantage, but we consider it a superpower!
Fabulous video and what an engaging and warm person you are. I’m a mature uni student (in my 40s) studying a degree in art history and recently made Frida Kahlo masks using collage, for an exhibition at our campus gallery (and an assignment). Inspiring, love your collages, your technique and especially how you express yourself. I have been a makeup artist my whole life transitioning in my older age to other art expressions, no longer erased like makeup but to create something more lasting. Your colour palette and sense of texture is truly wonderful!

Luis is very inspiring with his collages but I was wondering if you want to start doing collages and sell them. I noticed that the pictures he uses are from magazines like Vogue and the Dietrich picture he used. How is it that you would not get into trouble with copyright? Interested in how it works. Thank you in advance
That is a great question and something even I had to look up because you got me curious! From what I have been able to find online so far, "Collage is a time-honored art form that utilizes pre-existing materials, including artwork and photographs. Often the materials will be copyrighted. So your unauthorized use of those materials would be copyright infringement unless your collage qualifies as fair use. Unfortunately, there is no legal rule on whether collage as a category would be fair use. It will depend in each case on an evaluation of the four fair use factors with respect to the particular collage." What a lovely insight into how Luis works - very inspiring. I'm curious though, @prettynormalproductions @luismartin is there a copyright thing with using images from magazines even though he is changing them and producing new art from it? Wonderful to watch. Thank you.
I had this question years ago. From my own experience, there is no copyright infringement once the image has been manipulated, in this case, cut/torn and then added to a larger image. But say I have a very specific, popular Calvin Klein ad with a famous model in it, even if I cut out the model's head and use it as the central focus in my college, there is no copyright infringement taking place. However, if I make multiple copies of the original full ad (without any manipulation to it) on good stock paper and sell them as framed art, then I am infringing on the copyright(s) of the original artist (the photographer).
