I left a lengthy comment on part one. One more cleaning tip. On the back of the cabinet is a cover over the cabinet temp sensor. I remove that to access the the temp sensor. I clean that so it is bright and shiny. Reason that sensor reads the cabinet temp to feed the pellets. A clean sensor better, temp control. I'm sure you've don that with your 3.

I'd recommend a pellet grill for that. Take a look here: bbqguys.sjv.io/5b06rn

If you live in a damp area be sure you empty the hopper and make sure you burn off any pellets in the auger or the will become hard as a rock and you'll have to take it all apart and take it out of the auger...... Yes it happened to me

What steps are required to empty out any unused pellets? I've read multiple times where people didn't empty it and it got hard or a mushy mess

On mine there is a trap door at the back at the bottom. I push out as much as I can an what I don't get out I crank up the heat until it burns off what left.... I hope that helps.... I do it Everytime I use it because I don't know when I'll use it again and I don't want to forget.....
