Strictly speaking this is more a lick that belongs in the Diminished scale, or if you look at the two triads as a 6 note scale that is often called the Tri-tone scale. The altered scale doesn't have a perfect 5th anymore so there is no A triad. On a side note: This exact lick is also in used an Arch Enemy riff on Doomsday machine, but I am not sure which one anymore 😀
I came down here to suggest that this trick works because Eb is the tritone substitute of A. Great to see maestro Jens Larsen here - check out his channel if you want to learn more about jazz guitar.
I need to rethink my subscription for this channel :P ... this channel is way beyond normal human beings tolerance level of youtube channel addiction and awesomeness :-) .. you rock Uncle Ben ..\m/
DUDE. We have nearly the exact same idea AGAIN, though you have a much better understanding of what's going on than I did when I first played this. I called it "a major triad ascending up a whole tone scale" xD You are definitely my biological step dad.
I caught a video on here about movie music using two chords. This follows the M6M pattern (Major triad then 6 semitones up Major triad, or two major triads a diminished 5th apart). This was described as 'outer space'. You just made an awesome outer space music.
You're the best Uncle Ben there is. I bet you'd never get shot and leave your superpowered nephew all alone to deal with that great responsibility bullshit. Would love to see more exercises on pick-slanting, like maybe a longer exercise spanning the entire fretboard that can be looped, to really get the technique under our fingers.
I have to apologise for the question i'll be making here in two seconds.... For the question is: if i want to play this exercise on a Db tuned guitar (Drop C# tuning) with 24 frets.... Does the shapes change? Or i can keep the shapes that you used? If not, how do i do the calculations? Please and thanks
I am trying to decide between getting an AxeFX or a Kemper. I have heard killer tones from both. I don't want to spend too much time tweaking and I heard that the kemper is the easiest especially with a great profile.
check out bias fx... free trial.. save more money and still have killer tones. kemper and axe are botjh stupid expensive, awesome yes... but pricey. if your not at "Uncle Ben" Levels of playing or touring then you likely dont really need one, also I wager set up right youd be hard pressed to decern between the axe fx, kemper and Bias... only difference is that you will have more cash in the wallet with Bias Fx.
better IMO, cause now I have more cash for other stuff. :) If I were going to shell out 2 G for something at this point I would get the Bias head ( still cheaper than axe or kemper ) :)
Can stepchild chumps like me who've only been playing a couple of months get some easy peasy lemon squeezy licks to impress all the cats at the guitar store?

Stuart Jones Thank you Stuart! I am very happy you recommend my channel! ☺️
another reason to look forward to Fridays and very concise lesson thanks Ben
Mark Bayfield exactly dude. Uncle Ben has made fridays just that much cooler.
Great vibrato on that last note !
Yay! A new lick to try out while I mess around with my new valve amp! (used, but new to me)
This exact riffage is at the end of a Yes song too. "I'm Running" from Big Generator. Very Cool!
That Suhr is a nice guitar.
That's a really mysterious sounding lick
Uncle Ben, your're the man!

Whata great vidya game! And cool lick!
Great stuff. Thank you sir!

Great explanation dude, thanks!
I've always called this the Banjo-Kazooie sound.
WIIIIIISE FWOM YOUR GWAAAAVE!
That's a good one Ben!
The first time I heard this lick was in the soundtrack to Jaws. John Williams rocks.

Yooo uncle, I saw in your instagram page that you were modding another Ibanez. Looking forward to that video!
Awesome man!
That is a nice Suhr sir!

great video thanks man
Altered Beast is that Sega Genesis game, right? I always went to my neighbor's when I was a kid to play this thing! 😄
that minor9 is actually great in harmonic minor/phrygian dominant stuff, as the E7m9 resolves more perfectly into the am.
Outstanding. Is that the "Volcano" picking pattern? PS. Do you ever play that Line 6 AxSys? Early days of modelling right there.

Behind you in the most of the video... is that a Frank Zappa portrait I see!?
Blue you dang right it is
One hell of a virtuoso. you should totally do a weekend wankshop episode on one of his songs!
Ben Eller love the Jazz/Fusion flavors in this and the most recent videos. Anything that expands beyond typical note selection is always cool.
Nice.
Nice
Is your sound via the Kemper and studio monitors?

MrDmadness Bias is very good. Probably just as good as axefx.

MrDmadness I'm not really worried about the price. I paid 3500 for my Marshall halfstack so compared to a tube amp axe and kemper are very affordable.
What bpm are you playing at full speed?
Try Rush - The Spirit of Radio intro. Tricky to get it just right

Teach more theory stuff.
