    What is your favourite brand of mop brush? Let's see if we can work out which one is the most popular from everyone's personal experiences.

      Now that I've seen the whole video: If I hadn't my Japanese calligraphy brush, I would like the classy squirrel brush for making washes, and the synthetic mop as allround brush. Do you know meanwhile how the synthetic mop performs with washes?
      Will you receive products from the current Panart assortment of goods?

    I appreciate what I think you've attempted here, but I have to ask: Why would anyone evaluate thick synthetic squirrel hair or natural squirrel hair brushes on their ability to hold a point and to draw "detail?" These brushes are designed to create large, lush, smooth washes as well as large scale shapes. You might as well have compared loose charcoal powder to an 8H pencil and compared them on their ability to hold a point and draw detail. If a painter is seeking a brush that is middle-of-the-road at everything, then synthetic will be fine: it won't be a great detail brush or a great wash brush.
    That said, I genuinely enjoy your other videos!

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  Год назад +1

      Thanks John, I just went off the item description at the time when it states they can be used for details, so I had to give them a try, even though my main brush is a small size oo synthetic. But I have to agree with you, these are more wash brushes than fine detail brushes.

    I'd go for the cheap but I do have squirrel, and often find them too soft, I think I like synthetic best and I couldn't cope if I stuffed up an expensive brush

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  Год назад +1

      My thoughts exactly! I would hate to ruin an expensive brush as well, another reason for my sticking to the more affordable ranges. 🙂

    The mop brushes look almost like Japanese calligraphy brushes. 👀
    I always thought the brushes are soaked with gum arabic. I didn't know it was in fact glue. You said so in various videos, but I didn't think about this until now. Thanks for the information.
    I like your self-made brush stand. I made a wooden rack with short wooden clothespins. I screwed them staggered onto wooden slats, which I then attached to a board with screws. The clothespins hold my brushes in place with the handles facing up. I couldn't find anything that would suit me, so I built it myself.

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  Год назад

      Hi Lisa, yes you are right sometimes it is gum arabic, but sometimes a dissolvable glue can be used. I've seen this with some manufacturers, who have sent me their brushes to test out. I like the idea of your brush stand, very clever. 😁

    I like the synthetic squirrel brush because they snap back into shape much better. They also don't soak up all your pigment when you know you are not going to use that much.

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  3 года назад

      I do agree with you Deborah, as you watched here, I also prefer the snap rate for the synthetic brush. I much prefer a brush to return to it's set shape after each stroke. Paul 🎨

    Thanks for this comparison. I have decided that I would like both. I have always used synthetic brushes and have always had great difficulty with large flat washes. The squirrel brush was so impressive in the amount of paint that it loaded.

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  3 года назад +1

      I agree Jennie, the Squirrel hair brush did seem to hold more water, plus easier to apply a large, smooth wash as well. Paul 🎨

    I use the Black Velvet brushes by Silver Brush Ltd. I’ll never go back to using other brushes now, as these are far superior. Made from squirrel hair and synthetic Risslon fibres, they hold lots of colour and water.

    I definitely would chose the cheaper synthetic squirrel brush because of the way it performs & the price. I used a fairly cheap set of brushes (set of 12) to begin with before moving to my Princeton Neptune brushes that I chose for specific reasons.

    I think the real hair brushes are a lot more porous, so you end up using more paint in the end to get the result you want. Great video!!

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  3 года назад

      Thank you Jane, I do agree they do soak up quite a lot of water and of course pigment, so if you don't need all of the paint, it can turn out costly as well. :-)

    would the solid wood handle make that much of a difference, beyond the weight of the brush itself?
    I never use a writing or drawing instrument as is. i always fix em up to make them more ergonomical.
    it's baffling to me that a handle of a brush could affect me that much, when I've made myself adapt all of my utensils regardless of technicality. I've even broken brush handles to fit em in a different housing to make it move easier.

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  10 месяцев назад +1

      I agree with you regarding the solid handle. Yes, the weight does feel nice in hand, plus there may be less change of the paint splintering on the handle due to getting wet, but to me, that all really. I do prefer thinner handles and not too longer either. Oh, you are not the only one who has broken a handle on purpose, I did the same thing so it fitted within my paint's tin once, albeit a light sanding on the break to make it safe. 😂

    • @SJ-dl6uc
      @SJ-dl6uc 10 месяцев назад

      @@TheDevonArtist your comment about breaking brushes made me laugh so hard. i just can't imagine you sitting on the floor, staring petulantly at the brush, loudly complaining why they're not comfortable.

    Brother,the 1st one is a classic mop not a round,the brush you compare it to is a round,not a mop,that's a completely different tool. The inly brush type that comes close to that mop,is the Quill mop. Mops are a completely different tool than round brushes.

    Also,you should have done a proper backround wash like a sky with clouds,thats how you test a mop. The cheap synthetic sucked,because it couldnt release water nut only pigment. That means,that the reason these type of brushes are used, sets this brush to an almost unusable level and not at a "not so bad"...it was very bad. These kind if washescolour ,must look trensparent and not like if it was an acrylic opaque paint...Thats why natural always win,in watercolour brushes,its a big gap.Synthetic must be expensive,to kind if work a bit like natural,but it still will be an inferior tool. They dont last either,which means they are more expensive in the long run.
