One thing to note NOT to do in a 111 is to "Throttle Off" while there's still current running. Do that one too many times and you'll need another helping loco to tow you away 😄
What "Throttle Off" does is basically emergency-off the traction motor contactor, hence it "locking out" (which is actually a emergency-off).
And with a max current of up to 3500 Amps on 4 traction motors you can imagine the resulting electric arc isn't all that healthy to the electrical contactors.
The taps are a seperate system, being mechanically operated by a small electrical motor turning an axis, which switches the taps up or down inside the sequential tap system (that sound you can hear when tapping).
So what happens when you go to "Throttle Off" is that you cut the contactor instantly while there's still a huge current on it, creating an electrical arc possibly damaging electrical equipment and the Tap is slowly running down because it's a seperate system.
The correct (and for the loco healthy) way is to keep it in "Run Down" until the Taps are at 0, only then should you notch into "Throttle Off".
I hope they teach people that specific in the Loco Tutorial at some point.

Ahhh that's really useful information that I wish I had at the beginning of this! I'll pin your comment. Thanks.

@@trainsimulatordriver I've also skipped trough the livestream and another thing is the Hohe Abbremsung. It increases the maximum pressure in the brake cylinder from 3,8bar to 8,0bar to compensate for the bad braking performance of the wheel brakes at high speeds (111 got brake pads straight on the wheels instead of a disc brake), it activates >70km/h and becomes inactive

@@moshna2301also very helpful, there were lots of guesses on what that was and a few people got it right. Not surprised it has traditional iron brake shoes it is the 70's :). I'm streaming it again tonight (Xbox version this time) I will mention all these things so thanks heaps.

The 111 looks interesting. Thanks for giving a tutorial. I'm looking forward to it.

@@psych_1123 some of them really aren't, this one is a bit of a handful to drive so I like it. I don't like just sitting back and staring out the window while the machine drives itself

Thank you for your enjoyable tutorial. I frequently run into an odd situation with the BR111and I wanted to see whether you ever encountered that as well:
I am cruising at target speed and I pull back the throttle from the normal power section (not taps) to 0. Taps go down as expected. But then, all of a sudden, taps increase by themselves to full power and the engine speeds up, with the throttle still at 0. The only thing which helps is to use the train break, which makes the taps go down to 0.
    What is going on there?
Also, when I have the HUD on, where it shopws the power level set be the throttle, sometimes I see a white "1", and sometimes the "1" is yellow. Do you happen to know what the difference is?
    Kind regards from Germany,
    Mikael

      New
I think I begin to understand what I did... moved the throttle to one "+1 tap" (instead of 0) while breaks where still releasing... once the brakes where fully realized and power came back, taps started to count upwards.
Need to get used to this kind of throttle.

If it's yellow then that's dynamic braking slowing you down. Don't go to throttle off or dynamic braking will (should) stop working.
