- This was an easy project, and I know I'll be using this yarn bowl for years. In fact, I'll make myself a few more, because I'm trying to learn how to do Tunisian crochet with multiple color yarns, and that means more yarn bowls to keep them from getting tangled up. Aha, I always wondered how the Curley bit was formed. I can honestly say I have pondered on that many times. Thank you. I like it white too. I would also like one with paintings on of your animal sculptures. that would be interesting to see. I just thought too that a piece of fabric with your animal heads printed on would be really fun to use, maybe on an upholstered chair in a child's nursery or a bedspread.
Interesting ideas! I've never done anything with fabric, but it would be fun to play with it someday. I've been thinking about making a graphghan with crochet, and put some animals on them, if I can figure out how to do that and make them look realistic.

My Mom did Japanese Brush Painting on rice paper. I scanned some of her works of art and edited them. Then I used Spoonflower to print some Chiffon Scarves. I roll hemmed one already for my daughter. And plan on finishing the other 4 for my sisters❤. It's a real learning curve but fun and a great remembrance of Mom and her treasured (by me) artworks. ❤❤❤
I love this project! Not sure why I didn’t watch it sooner. But that’s my life for ya… you probably don’t remember I commented on another video about how I used your clay recipe to fix my husband’s bad trim cutting job on our crown molding? It worked like a charm! And I used the leftovers to make a little tree trunk.
I found your channel when we were making a bigger tree years ago (I added a link to your how-to video in my video of the tree build). But this might be my next project… as I have a ball of yarn rolling around my latest tree, who’s leaves are crocheted!

@@UltimatePaperMache yup! I’m pretty obsessed. lol The one I’m working on is a 2D tree made of chicken wire, brown paper, and green yarns that covers our DVD shelves. It’s mounted with hinges so it can swing out of the way for access. Plus another one in the middle of our house is life size and you can climb inside! With the murals and toy trees… 🌲🌳🌿 there’s a whole forest in here!

@ I do have the original video language set for English, and some of my older videos do show automatic subtitles in other languages. But it isn't working anymore. There must be a trick to it - I just haven't found it. And hiring translators costs too much... :(

I too can't really afford to pay for one of those wood turned bowls. This is a real lifesaver. I've been told that there are kitty & bunny yarn bowls where the swirl represents the tail (or multi tiny swirls to indicate a puff) and ears that rise up from the rim. Any suggestions on how to create kitty ears that won't easily break? I watch your wonderful videos but haven't done any paper mache since 2nd grade. (I'm 54 now sooo it's been a while.) This I'm going to make this for sure!!! Thank you AGAIN for yet another beautiful and useful works of art!!!
I found some of those kitty bowls when I did a google image search for yarn bowl. If you have a really narrow area without much support, you might need to run a light wire around the edges of the ears before you add your paper mache clay. Good luck with it! 😀

I have a question for you - I create more abstract/organic sculptural forms and I am wondering if you have any suggestions for doing something like this that could be fully enclosed. For example, something like you did in this video, but maybe a full globe. I imagine I would make two bowls and then join them together somehow, but do you have any tips for combining the two seamlessly? Also in a way that would be structurally sound, since I could only do it from one side?
Lastly - if I wanted to drill a hole in it after the fact, is there anything in particular I should keep in mind in terms of structure/preventing damaging?

Hi Allie. I made a globe with plaster cloth and paper mache over a rubber ball, and it worked well. I didn't cut it apart to get the ball out, but that would be possible by cutting the plaster cloth globe in half. You've need to reinforce the seam with more plaster cloth, of course. If you make the form with two bowls you can then put the two sides together the same way. If the sculpture will stay in the house, you can then use the paper mache clay to smooth the surface. The fibers in the plaster cloth add a lot of structural strength, even if you cut holes in it, but if you're looking for something that would be super-strong, you could use a thin layer of epoxy clay over the plaster cloth instead of paper mache clay.

@@Allie.Kushnir Yes, you'd want to wait for it to dry. The plaster cloth will fray and you'll get plaster dust flying around, so be sure to do it outside or over a piece of plastic. When you put the pieces back together again the little threads that will stick out will get covered up, and the piece should be quite strong.
Love this idea! Does the bowl have enough weight to it to stay put as you pull the yarn through the swirl?
It's working OK for me, but some other folks have suggested that it should be heavier. I think you could make the bottom heavier by pouring in some plaster of Paris before adding the paper mache clay. I haven't tried it yet, though. I'm going to make another one tomorrow and test it, just to see if it works without getting wet plaster of Paris all over my studio floor... 😄

Y cuando está terminado ¿Se lija para que quede liso? ¿O hay alguna otra técnica? ¿Cómo cuántas capas de papel maché utiliza?? Tengo muchas preguntas 😅 también eh visto que utilizan una masa??? Para hacer la forma de la cara??? No entendí muy bien esa parte, y en qué casos se utiliza la masa de papel maché y en cuál solo las tiritas de papel maché? Y como le añada el "pelo" a los animales

No, this is not a waterproof bowl. You would need to use epoxy clay or some other waterproof material instead of paper mache clay.

It looks so beautiful, but I was wondering why a plaster cloth is required. Can it be substituted with something else? I am absolutely new to paper mache and I am learning a lot from your videos.
The plaster cloth reinforces the paper mache clay and makes a hollow shape really strong. You could probably put a layer of paper mache clay directly over the plastic wrap and then reinforce it with cheesecloth. After the first layer is dry you would add another layer of paper mache over it. Or experiment - it's even possible that the paper mache clay would be strong enough all by itself. I just haven't tried it, because the plaster cloth method is so easy.

My kitchen scale says it's 12.5 oz, and it's 8 inches wide at the top. 😊

I don't know. I used the plaster cloth because the paper mache clay will normally shrink (and crack) when it's placed over a solid form like a bowl. When it's applied over plaster cloth that doesn't happen. If you put it on the inside of the bowl instead of the outside, it might work - but I don't know how strong it would be, because I haven't tested it. Go ahead and play with it, and let us know how your experiments turn out. 😄

A good yarn bowl needs to have a little weight to it so that it doesn’t move around. I’m wondering how heavy your bowl came out. Could your make the flat bottom thicker if you needed to make it heavier?
Good point! The easiest way to make the base heavier would be to pour some plaster of Paris in the bottom of the bowl. After it hardens and dries, you could cover it with the paper mache clay, or just add a few coats of varnish. If my bowl moves around when I use it, I will try that and see if it works. 😀

No, you don't need to use the plaster cloth, but if you put any water-based material over flat cardboard, the cardboard tends to warp. Look on RUclips for someone who makes fairy houses with paper mache so you can see how they do it. I've never tried it myself.
Im really curious have you ever coloured your air dried clay??
I have tried coloring it with acrylic paint, and it didn't work very well. The materials in the clay are really white and wash out the color. I want to try some pigments made for concrete, but I haven't had a chance to do that yet.

Your local community center might have classes. You could call them and ask. My book Make Animal Sculptures is kind of like a class, because it starts with really easy project and builds up your skills, so you can sculpt any animal when you're done. How can I make this water proof so I can use it as a planter?
You would need to make it with a waterproof material instead of paper mache clay. It might be possible to coat paper mache clay with an epoxy resin, but it makes more sense to start with something that's waterproof, instead. That way, you wouldn't have to buy an expensive product to coat the paper mache, and then hope it doesn't crack and let water in. Epoxy clay, like Apoxie Sculpt, is waterproof.
Can you wash things made with the clay?
No, it's made with materials that absorb water so it isn't waterproof.
You do not make pieces only with mache paper, when you are going to do work using only pure paper mache?

Sorry, but I have no idea how that would be done. I did a fast search for "plastilina," and it's evidently a mixture of wax, oil, and powdered pottery-type clay. If you find a recipe for it or make one up yourself we'd love to hear about it! 😀

I think that must be part of a video game - am I right? I don't do any video games, so I wouldn't be the right person to make something like that. I wouldn't know enough about the character's character, if that makes sense. The Ace of Clay might make one. He'd have fun with it. 😄

You'll need a good armature that creates all the shapes for you. Then add your paper mache. Sometimes you'll need very small bits of paper and paste, and it may need to be rolled to create details. But yes, it can be done. Do a google image search for papier mache sculptures to get some inspiration.
Maybe use a finer grit paper ...? SAY 400?
If you like it really, really smooth, that would work great.
