I wanted to keep the tree that fell down in the storm, but I don't own a chain saw and don't know how to use one without cutting off my arm. I bought a new wood stove last October, but it's sitting in the garage and won't be installed until next month (labor shortage, only one stove installer within three counties...). Do you have one of those fancy wood splitters, or do you have to do it the old fashioned way - by hand?

      The only wood that I have is some dead 50' tall pines. They are not good for fireplace wood but if I cut them to size, my brother will burn anything. My neighbor, who lives in Chicago but has a cabin here, lent me his log splitter. I am not very good at starting gas chainsaws, so I bought a couple of electric ones. There is about 20 more trees to go and that will be it for the dead ones. It is a lot of work but if I do not take them down, one day God or the wind will.

I think you can use concrete to "glue" the two pieces together, other than that there might be something at a big box hardware store. Thanks for the great content. From what I’ve seen in all the papercrete/concrete videos you should be able to glue them together by making a slurry of your concrete mix. (Make sure you have water on those areas.) At least that is what I’m trying with my Lipka concrete clay. Jonni, have you tried making hypertufa? It makes great outdoor pots and I figured since you’re the gardener it might appeal to you, they’re a lot of fun and a little addicting. I did make a large leaf impression with but it started to disintegrate, too much sand I think.

He worked in the concrete industry for years, so he probably had a good recipe for his mixture, but I've heard that it isn't easy to get it right. I've been avoiding making anything that sounds like concrete because of the big heavy bags, but now I may be hooked. 😊

    Joni, you could call it "Outdoor Paper Mache Clay". "Papercrete" is already an established product type patented in 1928 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papercrete). I would try using a wad of Apoxie sculpt to attach the frog to the leaf.

      @UltimatePaperMache  2 года назад +1

      Thanks, Rebecca. I've seen videos of people making papercrete to build houses with, so I had no idea it was trademarked. Thanks for pointing that out. I used Apoxie sculpt to attach my squirrel to a concrete block, and the bond failed after a couple of years. I think the epoxy shrinks or expands at a different rate than the cement, so they popped apart. But I've now been told about a couple of glue products that are supposed to work really well.

  • @CreateAgain

    Enjoying your channel. To "glue" the two pieces together, maybe you can purchase a small bag of cement repair mix that has the lime and other additives already added to join them. I may be trying that as well, so I don't know if it works, but seems logical. You should call your mixture "paper cemache" or cement paper mache.

    I worked in a garden center and we had two very large concrete urns out front of the door. They were planted with ornamentals and looked very nice. We knew they were vulnerable to being taken from us, even as heavy as they were.
    Here's what I did: I made some epoxy "paste" from PC-7, a 2-part epoxy and put that on the underside of the base. The urn was then placed on the concrete sidewalk and sealed down.
    The upshot is that at some point, someone actually did come by and take both vases despite our efforts! But, here's the important thing: while one was dislodged from the sidewalk fairly cleanly, the other one held so well that the thieves broke the urn from the base, which was still held fast to the sidewalk. We laughed at them for breaking the urn, but they took it with them anyway. :-D
    IDK if you would have a use for the rest of the cans of PC-7, but I could not recommend a better product for a super solid seal.

      Thanks for the idea, Raymond. I just looked up the product and it gets great reviews. I am sorry you had to go to so much trouble to slow down the thieves. I've only had one thing stolen - it was a concrete face that I put out in my front yard. I lived on a street that had lots of college students who walked down my sidewalk on the way home from the local bars. I hope they put it to good use - but I also hope they feel guilty every time they see it, if they could remember where it came from when they woke up from their hangovers. 😊

      @@UltimatePaperMache I hope they regret it too. You'll probably be served well by a regular "clear" epoxy for your frog, but when you want something stuck down good, PC-7 is my go-to. BTW-We had to take a sledge hammer and chisel to get that base off the sidewalk LOL.

Well, long story short I dropped it and it landed on the base which crushed the base in a tad, but make a 6" long crack around the outer and on the inside a hairline crack. I intend to paint it in a matte linen after repair. SOOOOO, watched your bird leg repair so ordered the Bond glue and have news paper. Any thoughts I can prick your brain to do this better? It's perfectly imperfect and that's ok.... and again, I'll be painting it in the, "linen," tone matte paint so..... I got in to watching all your other videos after I found the broken bird leg and LOVE all of them. The yarn bowl is amazing too!!

    I was watching a show on pbs about how the Great Wall of China was made, They added salt to the grout/binding in the formula. I am not sure how this works, but I put some salt in the papercrete and it works. I did not add much...just a handful for big leaves. I will try to find this show if you would like...

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  2 года назад

      What is the purpose of the salt? When you say 'it works,' what does it do for papercrete that wouldn't happen without it?

    • @janerios3497
      @janerios3497 2 года назад +1

      @@UltimatePaperMache it was used to fortify and strengthen the concrete blend. I used it in my leaves to make them stronger so I could use them in the garden. There is some speculation that this is why the wall still stands. I was concerned that if I used my projects outside they would not hold up in the weather. So far they are still in tact. The papercrete without the salt is showing some wear. I figured it could not hurt to try.

    When you make the cement clay, does it stay usable/pliable over time? Can you store it to use later. In a plastic bag?

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  2 года назад +1

      No, the cement will cause the clay to harden after a few hours, depending on the temperature in the room. However, I have heard that a different recipe called Lipka can be used for a long period of time. Do a RUclips search for it, to see how it's made. I haven't tried it myself.

    Hi Jonni, I'm hoping you'll see this message and have some advice for my project. I'm making a photo display for a dog agility trial and it's pumpkin themed. I'd like to make some vines and leaves as well as pumpkins big enough for the dogs to pose inside of. Pumpkin lid hats, too. I'm thinking of making the vines out of big cotton rope, maybe wired, and covered with fabric that'll be dyed/painted to look like real vines. Then repeat with upright stalks for the leaves. I was excited to see your video on casting leaves but I need it thin like a real leaf and was wondering if you had any ideas for casting off real pumpkin leaves. What recipe would you use for this? I've also seen some videos on fabric mache and was thinking I might try something with single layer thin cotton with casting somehow. Any help or suggestions with which recipe or method that you have experience with would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so very much!

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  7 дней назад

      I've never done anything like that, but it might be possible to use your cotton fabric dipped in wet plaster, and then press it onto the back side of a rhubarb leaf. You could trim the edges after it hardens completely. They would be somewhat fragile, but you could make them more rigid by adding a thin layer of my paper mache clay over the back side of the leaf after it was hard. You can find my newest recipe for paper mache clay here: ruclips.net/video/3oF_tKaRiBY/видео.html

    I just subscribed. I may be a day late and dollar short with my input, but in Sculpey we used baby powder or cornstarch to keep the clay from sticking to the mold. Would it help to put a light dusting of powder on the leaf first? Since the leaf itself contains moisture it may be why it is sticking to the concrete so much. Just a thought. I do love your videos. You give us all the info we need to try these projects ourselves with confidence. Thank you and God Bless you!

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  Год назад +1

      I don't really know how to measure it - it's going to be used as a thin layer over an armature, usually crumpled foil, so it shouldn't add very much weight. Warren Eggleton, the fellow who gave us the idea for this recipe, thinks it's about 50% heavier than regular paper mache clay - but I'm sure he was just guessing.

    If you want to put that leaf on the wall, how would you do it?

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  4 месяца назад +1

      You could put a wire in the paper cement clay while it's still wet. You'd want to bend it into a U shape, and then bend the ends again so they wouldn't easily fall out. Like the Omega symbol, I guess you could say. My father used to make a lot of concrete rhubarb leaves, and that's how he did it.

    • @UltimatePaperMache

    Just discovered your channel and subscribed 🤗. I really wanted to make some tree faces for my trees. Can you show us how to make it? I wanted something I could put on my trees during Halloween. I live in Houston, Texas where it’s very hot and we have a lot of humidity. Would something like this survive outdoors in our temperature? Would like to hear your thoughts.

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  2 года назад

      Hi Elizabeth. This is still an experimental recipe, so I don't know if it would work in Houston. My toad and leaf are sitting outside now, and they've been rained on four times. One of our rainstorms broke a record for the amount of rain in one day, but the sculpture is still doing fine. It was made with this paper cement clay recipe, and sealed after painting with Rustoleum. Matte Clear Enamel. That's not really proof that it would work during your Halloween, but it's definitely worth trying. Just remember to seal it - and come back after Halloween and let us know if it worked. I love that idea, by the way! 😊

      I didn't weigh the leaf before sticking the toad to it, so I don't know exactly how heavy it is. Our friend Warren, who inspired this recipe, says it's about 50% heavier than the original paper mache clay.

  • @adriennealine

    Instead of gluing the 2 pieces together, couldn’t you use more papercrete mache clay to join them?

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  2 года назад +1

      That might work, but I haven't tried it yet. I'll probably know as soon as I get started putting the skin on the top of my toad. I got held up by a big garden project that had to get done - some irrigation pipe that I should have finished building months ago but held off until it got really hot. It couldn't wait any longer. But that may be a good thing. Now the underside of the toad is very hard, so it will be a good test to see if the new material will stick to the part that's already cured. 😊
