    For the first time on Abandoned & Forgotten Places I've implemented... maps!
    Well... actually, (a map). Yeah, it's rudimentary but it's a start and its something I'd like to experiment with more in post production in the future.
    A 3D rendering of the mines I explore utilizing software called Cinema 4D will eventually be the ultimate goal of the channel. I've looked into "lidar" mapping systems (as you guys have suggested) but it's just too expensive and it would require me to explore the mine twice and that's something I just don't want to do because I would be doubling my risk exposure in these areas. Because of how dangerous these places can sometimes be, the goal is to capture the entire exploration with only one visit.

    Abandoned & Forgotten Places
    Documenting abandoned mines like never before!
    Let's take abandoned mine exploring to the next level!
    With your support you can help make this the best abandoned mine exploring channel on RUclips!
    Shot entirely in 4K! ...so, turn up those video settings!
    On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
    A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
    DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
    Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.
    Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST. (that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that subscribe button and bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!
    Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT! All these things help grow our channel and your financial support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob, thanks you!
    Ok, now for the ugly stuff...

    “Gly”: On screen maps is a new experimental feature and I’d appreciate your input good or bad. The biggest problem I see with OSM is the image is too small if your viewing on a phone or tablet but if your viewing on a PC or smart TV at 4K resolution the map is sharp and clear. Your thoughts?

    • @Reziac
      @Reziac 2 года назад +5

      You could put the map image on a website with link in description, and let people flip back and forth if they want to see high resolution. For inside the mine, low-res transparent overlay would be good enough. Also, if it's transparent you can do 3D, when you get that far.
      I couldn't read the text on my PC screen (shit connection, 720p maxes me out) but it was still good enough to see the layout, which was interesting as I was noticing geology (I think?) marked on the map.

    I remember when I was a kid, we took a vacation up to New England. Aw we were driving through the "mountains", my dad told, then showed me that all the mountains we were driving through were waste rock/tailings/slag piles from all the coal mining. It STILL blows me away that it was all man made and yet for the most part, looked like natural mountains.

    The addition of a mine map is always interesting, but may I suggest just popping it up at major junctions or features? As you have it, it blocks too much of the view. Bring it up for only occasionally and do it full screen so us old, half blind guys can actually read it, then move on.

    The comment about lumber mills in the area tells me that at one time there was quite a bit of timber covering those hills. Given the amount of water in the mine it isn't surprising that it was much greener in the late 1800's. Cutting off most of the timber changed the local climate so that now it is much more arid on the surface and it will take many years before it might return to what it once was like.

      I grew up in the Outer Banks, N.C. People are usually amazed to learn that the islands stretching out into the sea were once lush and forested. Now they are all basically sand dunes. Sadly deforested over the last several centuries in order to build ships up and down the islands for fishing, pirating, etc. California was basically deforested of Sequoia up and down the coasts to build its large cities. Like the Outer banks and Nevada proves, unless man intervenes or disappears completely, they will likely stay barren.

    • @Dave_9547
      @Dave_9547 2 года назад

      @@CokeCheese Good comment, something I didn't know about , at least the outer banks, since I lived in Calif for a long time. Mankind was slow to understand, or maybe wanted to ignore the realities of what trees grew where and why they did. A good example is the state of Oregon. In the NW and on the west side of the Cascade Mts., there is a lot of rainfall and the predominant tree is the Douglas Fir. They grow like weeds and they grow fairly fast. On the east side of the Cascades it is much drier because of the rain shadow and the predominant tree is Ponderosa Pine. Lumbering cut the Pine trees and of course they didn't grow back quickly without mans assistance which was slow to happen. Early lumber mills competed for who could produce the most lumber in a year with no regard for sustained forestry. We are starting to figure it out, but changes in climate also has an effect over many centuries.

    Gly, I LIKE the mapping feature you've added. Our "mental GPS" tells us - in general - where we are, but you're there while we're watching the computer screen. That feature REALLY ADDED to the realism of the size and depth of the mine, and where we were, relative to the entrance, etc. Good job, Maynard!
    So, that was NOT a ceiling collapse at the back, but a slippage of mud and water through a fault? I must have missed where you discussed that in the past. Interesting. I can see how and why it happened... again, thanks to your expertise.
    NO, Do Not go where it's dangerous. I'm not a thrill seeker like that 'other guy and his wife.' I much prefer your style of 'education, along with exploration.' I think I speak for all of us when I say --- we want you around for the long haul, not the first person beyond the next collapse. You're the best at this... the very best, and Saturday mornings with your shows are one of the highlights of my week!

      “Gly”: Thanks Carl! There’s another 3000 feet of mine past that fault gauge and I’m going to attempt to find it in a future video. I’m certain I know where the shaft is but it’s nearly 1400 feet deep to that haulage level and I’d be really surprised if it still has an intact manway. Most likely it’s all flooded down there and I can only imagine just how much water is welled up behind that clay plug. If you tried to dig it out you’d probably be spit out the haulage adit like water chasing through a soda straw. Lol

      @@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces Not to mention the hydaulic overpressure, mud and debris you would be riding in! Kind of like a flash flood on steroids - in a tunnel.

    I think the maps take up a bit too much real estate of the screen, especially when fully opaque. It is still visible when the opacity is lower (maybe

    First off I have watched all your videos, I absolutely love them… the new drone footage is stunning. One thing though the bing on the map is a little distracting, not a criticism just a note. But the map is great, not sure where you get them from but would love to see more.
