    I think this was right after they played one of the loudest gigs of the 60s: A triple blitzkrieg of deafness and hearing loss from the MC5, The Stooges, and Blue Cheer at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit in June '68.

      This reminds me of watching bands on tv as a kid in the 60s. They first used to put 95% of the camera on whoever was singing, then maybe the other 5% you might get a quick blip of the rest of the band.
      Then it progressed to getting all artsy with a lot of effects and you might not really see the band much at all.
      I remember watching local tv show with local bands and my sister getting mad because all the camera was on ugly creepy lead singer and none on the cute guy playing guitar

    I saw these guys at the Cow Palace in '68 with Canned Heat, Credence Clearwater and a Haigh-Ashbury band called the Wedge. The ticket was a buck and a half. Summertime blues was getting played on Top 40 AM radio and the brand new underground FM format on KMPX played whole album sides. These guys were loud! Hendrix loud, Who loud... with virtually no PA... just a monster stack of amps on stage.

    These guys were amazing, just a power trio, and everybody notices what a monster Paul Whaley was, but Leigh Stephens was creating a wall of sound like no other guitarist at the time, and Dickie Peterson established a standard for bassist/vocalists that nobody has exceeded. The various incarnations of Blue Cheer produced some great rock and roll that was never as widely recognized as it should have been.

    • @On_Dust
      @On_Dust 3 года назад

      I wanna be in a power trio. Except for better money. You don't need to practice all the time for other band members changing their parts. And if all 3 members of the trio can sing in tune, you'll end up with some pretty good harmonies.

      There's nothing sinister about it. It's Acid Rock made by people taking LSD for people who were into LSD. And I mean pure doses around 350-400 mics. The average dose today is 50 mics. You couldn't listen to anything evil or scary sounding back then or you'd freak out...........This was brain wave music and turned into something beyond music when you listened to it on a trip.

      This was LSD music. The Acid we got was made by Owsley , pharmaceutical grade and almost 8 times stronger than it is today. Blue Cheer was a special batch of Acid Owsley made for them. That's how they got their name. You wouldn't believe what happens to this music on a full blown Acid trip........I can't describe it but it's wayyyyyyyyyyy beyond mere music. As soon as I finished watching this, I hit Subcribe to your channel. I couldn't believe that someone actually had a video of my "Heroes" in their "Golden Age" Thank You so much for posting this-It's a Dream Come True! Try to find more footage from this time period-The 2nd Album "OutsideInside" (I played a Black Rogers Double Bass Set in a Midwest Band called, "Travelore" in the 1980's).

    I think I saw this "show". It was free at the Avalon Ballroom. Blue Cheer did two songs {Out of Focus was the other} over and over as it was being filmed for T.V. Steve Miller Band also played two songs a number of times.Is this film from that show? It's been 50 years!

    Blue Cheer was on The Mike Douglas Show and played Out Of Focus. The sheer impact of the volume on the studio equipment caused wavy lines to appear on the TV screen. Mike Douglas was pretty liberal as far as letting acts like Blue Cheer play on his show and all the performances were live. I doubt that he had much Blue Cheer in his personal record collection.

    Wow, this was heavy for that show. This was obviously taken from the unedited tapes with the time cues. This is the only live performance video I've seen for this song. There is another video performance for a song from this album (The Hunter), but Randy Holden is on guitar and I can't remember if it is lip synced. There is a video of Summertime Blues from American Bandstand but quality is very poor.

    if you dig this there's word that the Owsley Stanley Foundation is in possession of some dynamite live Blue Cheer from their heyday, engineered by Owsley, or at least blasted to the max through his primo sound system, which was the best at the time. You can search them on the web and bug them about it, I did. The foundation is presently going through thousands of recordings from Owsley's archives, they are restoring and digitizing them for official release YAY!!!!

      The technology wasn't that advanced back then. But we are lucky to have this kind of quality for this time of period. We are even more lucky to have it in colour. Most videos of gigs and concerts are in black and white.

    You're right , Randy Holden is on "The Hunter" clip from Geman TV , and "Summetime Blues" from Beat Club(German TV) , he's just miming Leigh's parts , as they did a tour of Europe shortly after he joined , and they were still promoting "Outside Inside". The Bandstand clip ,I have a VHS copy , but , there is a better copy on You Tube. This thing , here , tho' , seems live to me...Could have been assisted , but , does'nt seem that way.
