I saw Jo Jo Gun , Grand Central Station and Rare Earth at Hara Arena in Dayton Ohio back in the 70s . What a concert ! Boy was life better back then
Remember when bands played live warts and all? Miss this...
I was just about to post the same thought. You nailed it.
It was the best!
i'll take "real" + "live" music played by teenagers ANY DAY OF THE WEEK
I love that there are still young bands playing 60's and 70's rock
Devastating track, love Jay Ferguson right back to his Spirit days.
I Got A Line on this band, 12 Dreams ago, with my grand daughter JO JO! Jay, Randy & Company R&R @ it's finest. They did a show in Hazleton, Pa. St. Joe's Gym.
@@billfox4678 I see what you did there, love it 🤣🤣🤣
Only old Stoners are still paying attention.
The rehashed Clapton, Boz Skaggs and all the midwest bands are tired. The Allmans(Tedeschi, Trucks which are as cool as their parents) are the creme de le creme of longevity.
@@NoWayOut55 I’m gonna catch the Tedeschi Trucks band next time they blow through town, missed em last time.
Derek & Susan ROCK! the Blues!
@@NoWayOut55
Hey! I’m going to see Tedeschi - Trucks band this Friday night June 14th in TTown - Tulsa, OK… I told ya ! I’m SO excited 👏 👏 ❤
This is another of the _ROCKIN'_ clips from The Midnight Special that - a half century later - will still occasionally cross-my-mind. It's SO good to be able to once-again actually _SEE_ this clip again.
One of my all time favorites and still so at my tender young age of 68!😎
1972 - I saw Jo Jo Gunne, Lee Michaels, and Black Oak Arkansas all the same bill. My ears rang for days but I was happy as a clam.
In the 60’s music lovers knew about Spirit J Jo Gunne, we had so much great music to keep up on. But now we are old have only sweet memories for our brain to enjoy. May the beat of rock go on. Thank you.
Very fine live performance of the hit single
Great unacknowledged drummer in his day. William Curly Smith.
Still with Boston?
I was scrolling the comments looking for his name! Thank you! I couldn't help but notice how well he played with the manic energy of this song.
@@kearneydillon4803 I had the album Bite Down Hard when I was a kid and there was a drum solo on it that 70’s when you could put a drum solo on a studio album 😆
@@keithpodhradsky1314 As far as I know
Kind of a strange looking bird.
But he plays his drums like a madman!
Just the way I like it!
I actually wish more people knew about Jo Jo Gunne. Run Run Run was their only hit, but it's a damn good one if ya ask me!!
Actually if you can find it, BITE DOWN HARD was a fantastic album that they made after this one...... I think they did 4 in all????!!
Randy California led the way in SPIRIT along with his father in law on drums so Jay moved on. Not a bad idea
Beg to differ, they have plenty of other hits. You have to go check out their music. They were not a one hit band! Period. Way more.
good enough too be covered-- by Leif Garrett!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa outstanding, never knew the video footage existed !
Killer cut from my teens...🤩

What fun band.. I must’ve seen them 4 or 5 times.. in 72 and 73. Good times. Thanks so much Jo Jo
Welll now…. That went nice with my morning cup of coffee.
I saw Jo Jo Gunne in 1973. They opened for Humble Pie at Summerfest in Milwaukee. It was the infamous Outlaws Motorcycle gang riot. Pretty wild considering we were all of 17 and 18 years old. 😁
..>Jo Jo Gunne was an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, United States, in 1971 by Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes after they had left the rock band Spirit. The band was named after the Chuck Berry song "Jo Jo Gunne". The band released their eponymous debut album in 1972 and had a top 10 hit song "Run Run Run" in the UK. They released three further albums before disbanding in 1974. They reunited in 2005 for a time to record a fifth album Big Chain.
Jo Jo Gunne was formed by Jay Ferguson (keyboards, vocals and guitar) and brothers Mark (bass and vocals) and Matt Andes (born February 6, 1949; guitar, vocals), along with William "Curly" Smith (born January 31, 1952, Wolf Point, Montana; drums, vocals, and harp) in 1971.
Following the first album, Mark Andes left the band after a falling out with his brother Matt and Ferguson and was replaced by Jimmie Randall. Randall introduced a brighter bass sound and helped increase the band's overall volume.
..> Wikipedia.. ;)
...IIRC, Mark Andes also had gigs with Firefall and '80s Heart.
@@jazzpunkPretty wimpy stuff musically compared to Jo Jo Gunne.
@@jazzpunk
I Love Mark Andes! 😂 he’s a great bassist and so HOT! 😍
I also like the band “Heart” have seen them 3 times and all were great shows.
1st was ‘78 @ Texas Jamm & in ‘79 opening for the Cars @ Arrowhead Stadium. Last was about 10yrs ago their encore songs were all Led Zeppelin’s / Cool!
Those Wilson Sisters - Ann & Nancy - are SO talented!
Ty...Muzik Hiztory 101... 😎👍
@@joequeer3385wimpy on Firefall and Heart no way they had some outstanding tunes.Heart is huge force with the Wilson Sisters
Got to see Jo Jo as well as Spirit. I feel very fortunate.
likewise!
Spirit is what begat JOJO GUNNE!
I would have loved to see Randy in all of this.
Alas, the Twirly Birds weren't meant for a long shelf life.
I saw Jo Jo Gun and Humble Pie in July 1973
I’m kinda jealous of everyone here, not gonna lie, didn’t see any of the bands mentioned here. Born too late, darn it!
But LUCKY for y’all !!
99 days🔥🔥
Runnin' on a Tuesday morning!🏃♀️😄 Nice rockin' tune! I love the piano player's pants and 👞 😊💜
Check out" Before we get breakfast", live. producer then was Steve Lukather.
When he got up from his piano bench, the (maybe 3-4 inch) platform shoes caught my attention...my memory of wearing platform shoes was in September '73 when I had my Bar Mitzvah...the memories...
Nice Melody Maker
@Todd-qs4s:
~ Although as all of us Melody Maker owners know, you've got to replace most of the cheap hardware (pick-ups, bridge, tuners) to make it an actually decent quality instrument.
Yes sir, I had one with a Bigsby on it...
@@charliebe28 Definitely; I had a 1965 model (similar to the one used by Joan Jett and Pat Travers) that I installed Schaller tuners, a Leo Quan's adjustable wraparound bridge, and Seymour Duncan Melody Maker pickup-sized humbuckers.
@@JNDGuitarman:
~ Yeah - , I also have a Melody Maker in that 1965 - `66 body shape, in what is known as a "Cardinal Red" finish. I bought it 2nd hand (or maybe even 3rd hand) in June of 1972, for $100 (which was a fair amount of money for a 15-year-old kid back then ☺). Over the few years afterwards, I bought for it some Groover tuners (which was the first time that I had ever heard of that brand), two Les Paul "Deluxe" pick-ups (which required me to do some delicate "surgery" on the pickguard and pick-up holes) -, and by 1977, I had bought the same type of Leo Quan "Bad-Ass" bridge that you mentioned. Do understand, during the mid-1970s, at my local music store, the selections of aftermarket replacement parts were fairly limited.
Great performance!
Love this!
I didn't even know that Jay Ferguson was part of this group and Spirit. I thought that he was a one hit wonder with "Thunder Island" and I also thought that Jo Jo Gunne was a name of a person and not a group. Plus the fact that I didn't know the most is that he wrote the theme to the TV show "The Office".
He also did some stage time with Joe Walsh.
@@kickzip Who uncoincidentally played on Ferguson's solo album, notably playing lead slide guitar on "Thunder Island." Like @drummerbraves, I didn't even know until right now that JF was in Jo Jo Gunne. I love these videos of The Midnight Special!
@@marknjp Not only Joe Walsh played on Ferguson's first solo effort but Joe Vitale as well. You can kinda hear some of the 2 Joe's vibe on a number of Jay's early work. Always a big fan since the Spirt days.
He also worked with John Mellencamp, and can be heard singing on the very naughty "Lovin'' Mother Fo Ya" (Uh-huh album). Particularly love all that he did with Spirit, especially The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus.
Jay had a couple of hits not one hit wonder Shakedown Cruise the other.Spirit to this his Solo stuff.Mark the bass player would go on with more success with Firefall brilliant band then the ever bigger group Heart in the greatest decade of all time never to forget miss it so much oh hail the 80s atmosphere could harp on and explain vibes and feelings like no other
Love Jo Jo since back then..had some amperage going
Cracking track
All the great bands are gone forever so sad
Loved this song when it came out. Love that Melody Maker, too.
It sure is a sweet looking lil thing!😂
Awesome thanks
THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING THIS
Early 70's, my first concert. Jo Jo opened for BTO at Long Beach Auditorium. Over 50yrs ago!
Run run rabbit run !!
Wow...really enjoyed seeing this video. Jo Jo Gunne was one of the most underrated bands in my opinion. Their 2nd album Bite Down
Hard was a masterpiece
You made my morning 😂😂😂
Love this song. #1 on my music that I walk to.
Great to at last connect the song to the artists. Was in a band and played that song many times on the same model guitar a Gibson Melody Maker 1958, great rocker..
Had tickets to see Jo Jo Gunn in Mobile in the early ‘70’s /w Foghat & the J Giles band. Sign outside said Jo Jo Gunn wouldn’t be there, I was bummed but figured Foghat &J Giles would be a good show. Announcer came out before the show & told us Foghat had canceled as well. We stayed to see J Giles & were not disappointed. Put on a great show for 3 hours.
What a effin song what an effin band. Love this. 👍🤘😁
Iconic head shaking and fringe from the guitar player.
Wow what a thrill to come across this performance. I had the album this was on and played the heck out of it. My favorite track. Have thought about the group many times over the years. It was cool to find out Mark Andes was part of the band. My best friend in Austin knows him well. Not sure if this album ever came out on CD. Rock on!
Yes CD. Amazon is your friend.
AWESOME!! Couldn’t stop smiling b/c that was a high school favorite of mine! Thank you for posting. Ah… memories. 🥹
Loved this song, had high hopes for this band.
Remember loving Bite Down Hard in high school. Makes me want to revisit it now. Great seeing them here. 👍
Love this channel , some great gems on here including this , no miming just honest music played by great musicians
Watched this on my 18 th birthday
Still got my copy of this somewhere. 1 hit wonder in the UK.
Wow..I always thought this song was The Guess Who. Learn something new all the time on this channel.😋👍✌️
Brings back fun memories of my time in college in the 70's and the Pioneer stereo I had. 😎
Did u have the scope😂
My youngest-older brother had the Pioneer stereo system back then too. Our adjoining bedroom wall would {{vibrate}} from the volume ha! It’s why I love rock n roll music - he had a vast & varied album collection. I’ve got his old stereo system now, thanks sweet bro!
I'm glad to have any coherent Jo Jo Gunne footage, but I dearly wish someone would upload some of the original line-up.
A great rocker , never realized how few lyrics there were .
Man! It has been so long since I heard that tune! Loved it when it first came out.
I was trying to find this song the other day, but could not remember the artist...thanks for posting.👍👍
So raw!!
'Bite down hard' is without doubt a Jo Jo Gunne classic album and stood the test of time both musically and production wise. If you have never heard it then well worth a listen or 20.
Any chance of the rest of the show from the midnight special please ?
Still have this rockin lp from the early 70s...great gatefold!
Excellent. Heard this track but never knew who they were.
I wore this album out in 72 along with Grin. Well. Ay e a few others. James Gang live at Carnegie hall. And
Great clip! Classic song from my youth. Still got the album, vinyl of course…😄
I was a senior in high school. We got to see all the good ones indeed.
Saw them at the Hollywood Bowl with Captain Beyond and Alice Cooper.....Wolfman Jack was the MC....ONE of the BEST SHOWS EVER
The Andes brothers were in the band both in Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne.....my friends and I were TRIPPING on mescaline and the shit was REAL
19 years old 😁
good times
Mescaline? That's hilarious!
Awesome!
Boogie, baby!
"Academy Award" is another tune of theirs that delivers...same album with "Run, Run, Run".
Love this song! I saw them open up for someone in Chicago in the '74-'75 range. Can't really recall who. Uriah Heep, maybe? Humble Pie? Someone help a brother out! lol
Humble Pie. I saw the same tour in Dallas, my first rock concert.
Jay Ferguson..what a talent..check his album.."All Alone in the Endzone"...he also was in the so overlooked band..Spirit...
Platform shoes need to make a comeback
thats funny
Damn shoes gave me the worst shin splints ever!!
I could always dance better, when higher UP! 🥳 🎉
10$ says Jay Ferguson can STILL steal yo woman.
🤘😎🤘
Awesome.
This was one of the first 45s that I bought as a kid. I think I still have it somewhere.

I had an album by Jo Jo Gunne in the 70's!
💯
Saw them open for Alice Cooper at the Hollywood Bowl in 1972. Had the privilege to work with Matt Andes in the studio while recording an album at Can Am Studios in Tarzana Ca. Matt is an amazing artist, craftsman and one of the best slide guitarist ever...
If you go to the top of the comments, you can see I wrote of the SAME SHOW..... Hollywood Bowl.... AWESOME 😎
@@williamriley9904 Wolfman jack came out on a camel and a helicopter flew over the Bowl and dropped thousands of girls panties over the crowd that said we love Alice Cooper, that pilot got arrested that night and the band bailed him out of jail. My best friends cousin was Glen Buxton, so we meet A C at the Hollywood Riot in Hollywood before the show, had front row seats and attended the after show party at the Rainbow on Sunset. It was a who's who of rock royalty. Ah the mescaline, probably that brown stuff in a capsule? What a night...
Check out Before you get breakfast, live. Steve Lukither is producing them.
@@themrkkohler YIP 💯 SMALL WORLD...DAMN
I'm seeing a lot of great content on this channel, and I, for one, really, really appreciate you sharing it with us!
I bought this album for this song! When it was released
Met them in an airport in Jacksonville FL and played a game of pool. They were really cool. Ferguson was dreamy but even though Spirit was my favorite band I told them I never hesrd of Jo Jo Gunn.
I dig it! Great Performance!
Jo Jo Gunne "Jumpin' The Gun" Gunne? Don't remember how they spelled gun on the album but it is a GREAT album for any fans of these guys not familiar with it find it and listen to it. Will always be one of my very favorite albums and one that will always leave me wondering why these guys weren't massively huge!
Kickass baby ❤
Always has been, and always will be a baddassed Rock and Roll song.
The entire album is worth keeping....just a jam a minute.
The 2nd single i brought aged 15 in the uk, ps still got it
First concert I attended, Jo Jo Gunn opened for ELP, had to be summer of '72, Birmingham Alabama..
Kind of a strange pairing although I'm a fan of both bands.
An ace vocalist. Jay Ferguson always reminded me somewhat of Burton Cummings. I can hear a bit of the Guess Who in Spirit songs like “Animal Zoo”.
I always thought they were singing "ride". Great song anyway!
First single i ever bought
I love Jo Jo Gunne & especially this song, so dang energetic almost - frenetic !!!
Jay Ferguson is fine!!🔥🔥🔥 in his leopard print outfit! 🥵 a great lead vocalist and keys player.
1:14 love that part - is that the bass or guitar? Ty
Guitar, but his brother on bass comes in at the end.
@@DAGDRUM53
Ty - Matt Andes on guitar here or John Staehely?
It’s hard to keep the members straight as they changed etc…
Mark Andes isn’t on bass here, it’s Jimmie Randall I believe. I could pick Mark Andes out of a line up anywhere / love his bass playing but he’d already left to form Firefall by this time in the band, he’d had a falling out with his brother Matt. Confusing? Yeah, me too!
I was 16 when Jay sang Shakedown Cruise. Have it on Spotify, and this song too.
yes upload the other Jo Jo Gunne songs live on midnight special really cool to see live, What other bands did the bass player, lead guitarist and drummer come from and go to?
The original bass player played with Heart. The drummer played with Boston.
Jimmie Randall came out of nowhere, that I know of. The guitar player was a stahaley brother who played on a spirit album. Wille Ray Smith ( Curly) is the original drummer.
@@hermanflores6683 Did the lead guitarist Stahaley make a solo album or went to another band after Jo Jo Gunne?
'Monkey Music' did it for me
Just a spectatular track
I saw them open for KISS. Beacon Theater, NYC 1975.
JJG was a great band with Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes from Spirit, as well as Mark's brother, Matt, on slide guitar with a distinctive Spirit-y flavor. But for whatever reason the Andes boys departed, replaced by players that didn't fit as well, and the band's vibe was never as tasty again.
Mark Andes split to join Firefall Neither of them are on this video.
The Andes boys' father Keith was on "Star Trek: Original" and "The Rifleman" episodes, beyond many a 1950s "B" Movie. Smart of Mark to get into the Heart lineup after his time with Firefall.
..and Keith co-starred w Marilyn Monroe
pretty sure that's Christian Staehely on guitar. He and his brother Al played on the Spirit "Feedback' album and they tore it up.
In my opinion, the stahaley brothers never really fit into the band, Spirit.
Yes they could play, but their contributions to the Feedback album and the live performance were, nowhere. @ProggaWoggga
Ok so I'm guessing Jimmie Randall & John Staehely???
Help me out guys!
Still a great rendition!
Cheers!
Nice slide guitar
Saw them with Bad Company and Dave Mason
Wow. I don't remember them.
This and Elected by Alice Cooper were the first 7” singles I ever had. Fond memories of being about 12 years old in the UK.
😁😁😁
We are all still waiting for the follow up.
Slide Guitarists are SO COOL!!! 😅 What’s his name - the one in the shiny pink shirt & blue pants?? TY
i have never heard this song b4, but i do recognize the "slade" hair cut on the bass/rhythm guitar player
