    That was one of the best outboard reviews I've seen, very nicely and professionally done.

    I'm no expert, but, a "tinytach", or similar, gives you max rpm for the right propeller for your loadout. It also gives a basic hourmeter to keep track of useage and oilchanges. Max rpm sounded just a bit low, but I could be mistaken. I went for a lower pitch, and from 3-blade to 4-blade propeller, and got a "new" boat, responsive and 8-10 km/h faster with my rpm's closer to max recommended! I have a 20hp yamaha on a 16' glassfibre boat.

      You're correct. Trimming it up would be good too. Or notching it up a notch.

    Nice review! Well done! I'm picking up a used 2011 Sylvan 13' which is the same as the SmokerCraft. It has a 2015 Mercury 20hp four stroke. You review helped me see how well that motor performs in a similar boat. Thanks!

      6 NORTH OUTDOORS
      Thanks! Went to try it in the water before closing the deal (a Ford dealer had it on a trade) and it would start right away, but would not run off choke. Tried for 30 minutes or so. So, no boat. They will get it fixed and call me back. It’s probably an ethanol issue. We’ll see!

    • @bgqc31
      @bgqc31  6 лет назад

      I had to clean my carb twice due to ethanol.
      Easy to do after watching a few videos!
      I have just traded my motor in on a Suzuki 20hp EFI.
      No more carburator To clean!
      I hope to do the same type of review on the Suzuki.... Stay tuned!

    • @MattMolnar10
      @MattMolnar10 6 лет назад

      Sounds good on the Suzuki! The dealer just took the boat to the Marina and they confirmed that the carb was all gunked up. They putting a new carb on and I'll buy the boat, same price, of course.

      I only buy Shell premium gas (only fuel guaranteed free from ethanol)for all my small engines and use a fuel stabilizer as well. No carburetor issues at all

    I bought this motor after watching your video worked great on my zodiac. Would the motor work well on a 12ft aluminum boat with a 4ft transom? sold the zodiac but still have the motor and want to use it

    Were you dragging the trolling motor head? I pretty much had that same setup and would always tilt the trolling motor in the boat. Not stand it up like a flag pole.

    • @bgqc31
      @bgqc31  6 лет назад +1

      smokinhic - the trolling motor is not submerged in the presentation. I find when it is tilted it is dragged for a short period out of the hole.

    • @smokinhic
      @smokinhic 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the reply. Didn't even cross my mind to run that way. Always just tilted in. The tug is the drug, tight lines.

      Looks like a trail in water behind the trolling motor head was at least part way in water

    I’m about to purchase a 2018 smokercraft Alaskan 15 with a 20hp efi merc! How stable is the smokercraft on the water? I plan on fishing and duck hunting with it

    • @bgqc31
      @bgqc31  6 лет назад +1

      The Alaskan is very stable with one or two people in the boat. With three men aboard, weight distribution is a concern. 20hp four stroke is the right power for this boat. It is the right combination of power and weight.
      Note: this is a light boat so trim angle is critical to maintaining stability while on plane.

      I have 30hp mariner/yammy on mine. Works wonderful with 2ppl. I suggest putting a dolphin on the outboard with a bow mount trolling motor. Ipiot if you can swing it. One heck of a fishing machine. imo

    Do you happen to know what the dial does that's half way down the throttle arm. Thanks!

    • @bgqc31

      I no longer own the motor. I believe it is a tension adjustment for the throttle handle.

    What is the wheight of your boat??

    • @bgqc31
      @bgqc31  6 лет назад +1

      pink panther fan - The weight of the Smokercraft 15 DLX is 270 lbs. That weight does not include the swivel seats I installed, gas, battery or the motors.

  • @watercool5
    @watercool5 3 года назад

    That motor is smoking, even after the choke is open. I think it’s running way too rich at idle. You should not see the exhaust fumes.

    Motor was already warm. Didn’t need the choke. Why didn’t you make the video when you actually launched?

    • @bgqc31
      @bgqc31  6 лет назад +1

      HOTSAUCE - I had to wait for the fog to clear. As for the choke... I am curious why you assume the motor was warm.
      Thanks for watching!

  • @searider9922

    To achieve just 32 Km/h with a 20 HP motor it's a very poor water performance. My 450 Mtr Rib with a fixed load of 1,100 lbs powered with a 2 stroke 18 HP Tohatsu motor runs 41.5 Km/h on flat calm water cond. If wanting to follow, is the current prop the original one that came factory installed with said motor, is it a 20 pitch one ?

    • @bgqc31
      @bgqc31  3 года назад

      You are correct... I switched to the Suzuki and got much better results!
      Thanks for the comment.

    • @searider9922
      @searider9922 3 года назад

      It's not a motor issues, it's a prop issue, if current prop is a 10 pitch, install a 3 blade 9 pitch with same diam. Will bump up wot revs and better the hole shot and current top speed...Try it if still having the Merc 20HP motor.

    All Mercury’s 30 HP and under are made by Tohatsu in China. they a decent motors. Not great but decent, reliable and affordable. Yami’s are definitely better but more $.
