In fact the myth that Bill Lear was responsible for the Challenger is false. The truth is Canadair took his Ideas and added the wide body and improved the wing. Bill Lear hated it and call it fat and ugly but of course by then he was well out of the chain of decisions.
No. Bill Lear did most of the preliminary drawings and concepts. About the only thing that was changed was the position of the tailplane... which perhaps contributed to one loss during testing.
Excellent video about Canada´s regional airplanes history. I have always wondered why Bombardier had entered into the so-competed single-aisle market being the leader of the regional segment, the answer is: Embraer. Now it is Embraer´s new E2 version who will try to gain a position into the market the new Bombardier´s CS Series is intended to.
The CF-34 8C is a good engine, however for the CRJ 900 it requires a C1 rating and the higher thrust rating and ITT burn out the stage 1 High Pressure Turbine blades. I’ve pulled many HPT modules because of missing blades.

Well, that's because it is smaller than a 737. It is in a totally different segment, the 737 is a huge plane in comparison. The Airbus A220 is also smaller than the 737, and the 220 is bigger than the CRJ. Great history of the CRJ! My only disagreement with your video is bringing the 717/A318 into the discussion. These aircraft are significantly larger, around 45% larger than the CRJ900 and E175, and I don’t think they were direct competitors.
It’s where the market shifted. Those aircraft-along with the 737-600-completely disappeared because there were smaller aircraft that fit markets better. Remember when there were 19 seat aircraft like the Metro and 1900? Or 30 seat planes like the SAAB 340, Dornier 328, and Dash 8 100/200? Or larger single aisle planes like the 757-300? All gone because of planes like the Dash-8 Q400, the CRJ Series, the 737-800, the A320 and A321 etc etc which fit airline’s needs perfectly.
In my opinion, it's Bombardier's own fault for why the CRJ series is now outdated, as they never upgraded their avionics sufficiently over the years. Crj 1000s still carry around heavy CRT screen displays! That's unacceptable in this modern age. And the CF-34s are simply outdated when we speak of efficiency and range.
I flew on the Air Canada CRJ900 a few months ago from Edmonton to Toronto and as someone who is 6'3, I can tell you that it felt cramped and uncomfortable. For the price Air Canada charged me (nearly $600 after taxes and fees), it was a very bad value for the comfort and experience I got. Should've flown on WestJet's B737 instead. The interior design of the CRJ900 didn't look modern or premium compared to a Boeing or Airbus aircraft. That will probably be the last time I fly in a Bombardier commercial jet. Boeing or Airbus only from now on.
Theye serve a different purpose in todays market. The CRJ is still fairly economical to buy and operate. The CSeries (aka A220) is a modern aircraft that comes at a much higher cost and much more technology.

When you said the main competitor is the E170/190, i was like, ooh that's a nice plane. When they turn on final, you can fee l the pilots hot-dogging just a little bit. They are smaller and more nimble than the heavies, and you can tell they enjoy flying them. I bet they talk about whether it will do a barrel roll.
I flew on one of these from Detroit to Dallas. That isn't a region. That's three regions on the most uncomfortable plane I've ever ridden on. I stuffed napkins in my ears to muffle the noise from the engines. It was a bumpy ride all the way . The Embraer I flew on was quite nice in comparison.
As you mentioned in Embraer ERJ video, for regional airliners engines are too close to ground if mounted under wings, so both Bombardier CRJ and Embraer ERJ have engines mounted at the rear. But the new models Embraer E-jets and Bombardier CSeries both have engines mounted under wings, just like the larger airliners such as A320 or Boeing 737. So could you please explain what has changed?
@@goblinkok I am not saying it is wrong. It happens on bigger planes. On smaller planes however that is a problem (there isn't enough room under wings, engines would be too close to the ground). To make the problem clearer have a look of Honda jet, which is a even smaller jet. Do you think they would have put the engines on top of the wings if there is room underneath of the wings?
@@joseph_wei The new erj and c series are significantly larger, even larger than a 737. So there is no issue in having low engines. Its just different class of aircraft all together.
I have to fly on a CRJ900 American Eagle in 2 weeks. Flight is only 1.5 hr but I just found out its not even American Airlines. It's a company called Mesa Airlines. I have a bad fear of flying as it is, and now I have to put my faith & trust in a company I've never heard of and a plane that I've never been in that small. So needless to say, I'm freaking out.
Well, I hope that you got over your freekiness. Mesa are fine, as are all the regionals for the job they do servicing little places like Caspar and Fargo, et al.
The aerodynamics of the larger 900/1000 defy logic as to weight distribution. The wings are set back, the engines tail mounted, baggage appears to be confined to the rear left side. So WHERE IS THE BALANCE??!! And yet watching operations with near max loads the planes seem to operate normally.
I never liked flying on the CRJ's. Nice enough cabin. It's the cabin windows that bother me. Unless you're a kid or short They're so low you have to stand up or look across the aisle to see out. I like the Embraer regional jets much more.
The alternative is to put them so high up the fuselage you can only see upwards. There is only so much you can do with a small diameter fuselage. if you put the windows at eye level, it means they will be on the upper part of the fuselage slope and will lean steeply inwards, making it hard to see down. I suspect in customer surveys they found that people found that being able to see downwards was more important than being able to see out easily.
You should make a followup episode on this, considering that Embraer actually stole the design for the E-Jet from Bombardier (some engineers can't come back to Canada or they'll be jailed). Afterwards we eventually developped the concept into the C series, but facing brutal 125% tarifs from the Trump administration, we ended up giving it to Airbus, and it is now the A310. But the financial strain of developping multiple aircrafts in the post 2008 crisis era led to Bombardier selling it's rail division to Alstom, and the CRJs to Mitsubishi...

Never know that garuda indonesia had a crj1000...i used to flew with garuda's atr 72 for regional....
When you said the main competitor is the E170/190, i was like, ooh that's a nice plane. When they turn on final, you can fee l the pilots hot-dogging just a little bit. They are smaller and more nimble than the heavies, and you can tell they enjoy flying them. I bet they talk about whether it will do a barrel roll.
whhich plane at 09:24 ?
I flew on one of these from Detroit to Dallas. That isn't a region. That's three regions on the most uncomfortable plane I've ever ridden on. I stuffed napkins in my ears to muffle the noise from the engines. It was a bumpy ride all the way . The Embraer I flew on was quite nice in comparison.
Skyships Eng Great video sir! Can you make a series about Russian/Soviet airliners? Would love to know MORE than just the SSJ 100 and MC 21.
Cole Phelps he made video about MC21
Эрдэм Эрдынеев Yes. I watched it already. I meant I want more Russian and or Soviet aircraft besides those
This time garuda already have it :)
aaaand they regret it..
@@MNHambali why they regret it?
Because it's not efficient, bring loss to the airline. right now their fleet CRJ1000 are being transfered to their subsidiary, Citilink.
Their CRJ1000 is transfered to Citilink meanwhile Garuda's new CRJ1000NG has arrived.
How many crashed?
As you mentioned in Embraer ERJ video, for regional airliners engines are too close to ground if mounted under wings, so both Bombardier CRJ and Embraer ERJ have engines mounted at the rear. But the new models Embraer E-jets and Bombardier CSeries both have engines mounted under wings, just like the larger airliners such as A320 or Boeing 737. So could you please explain what has changed?
I am not sure what you are asking.
@@goblinkok You have to be more specific because I don't think I was unclear.
@@joseph_wei What you are asking doesnt make sense there is nothing wrong with low mounted engines.
The cockpit windows on crj are so sleek
i like it.
Why do jets that have their engines at the back also have their wing almost at the back of the aircraft instead of being placed at the centre?
Center of Gravity
you also get more lift from the wing not being obstructive by the engine
also engine would be too low to ground sucking in debris
TO THIS "SKYSHIPENG BLOGGER," MANY THANKS TO THIS "ENGINEER CEO THRU FREQUENT FLYER FOR THE CRJ SERIES," AND Y'ALL, "CONGRATS"!!
What do cigars have to do with this?
I Wanna build Planes when I'm older
Actually it was originally the challengair 604..private jet
The aerodynamics of the larger 900/1000 defy logic as to weight distribution. The wings are set back, the engines tail mounted, baggage appears to be confined to the rear left side. So WHERE IS THE BALANCE??!! And yet watching operations with near max loads the planes seem to operate normally.
CRJ-100/200 is the Devil's Chariot, you never mentioned how terrible and uncomfortable they are.
You didn't make any mention of the Global Express
Will you do Fokker 70/100 next?
Not next but i'm planning to do it later
Great! I hence from the Netherlands so it is a little piece of national pride!
I’ll be working on a 200 in 3hrs - lucky me 🙄
Rest in peace 216AG.
You sound a lot like Kreosan.
8:56-9:17 this is aircraft garuda indonesia 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩 greetings from indonesian
8:35 my Frontier!!! :-)
Is Bombardier CRJ a private jet?
Crj is a commercial jet whereas
Learjet, Challenger and Global are the business private jets of Bombardier.
Ah come on, when will you make one on the 747? Cool video though.
David 747-400 wants some 747-400)
Frank Galeon exactly
Everyone waits Boeing marathon)
I feel like there isn't an airliner around with more videos about it than the 747.
RumpelForeskin how about all the modern shit like the A350 and 787?
Nobody
