- In this video I demonstrate how to boot an external usb hard drive on a PC.
Please note what is shown on screen may look slightly different for you depending on what PC you use.
In this video, I'm using a HP Pavilion Gaming PC to boot this external USB Batocera Hard Drive.

So for anyone with an ASUS Tuf gaming PC hit ESC and set the protected boot option off on advanced and works like a charm. Thank you for getting me to finally get it. Got it hooked up and can’t wait to check it out after my kids birthday party.
Thanks for the info. Also, I liked how your HD looked like an old school cassette.
Thank you so much!!I was struggling to setup the boot order
The cassette design looks like my vast collection of ZX Spectrum and Commodore Plus/4 tapes!
Love this kind of content 🎉
Glad to hear it!
by choosing the hard drive in the boot override option your PC will boot into Batocera for once, afther restarting it wilk get back to your own operation.
Thank you so much I was having trouble with this for an hour thank you so much ❤
Glad it helped!
You are a wizard harry!!!

Does this work for a ssdd card too?
can you make a batocera build image with games for the Orange pi 5 ?
Even when I change the boot order to the external , it still boots from the internal hard drive not the external, not sure why
Which button moves the boot order up in an Acer main board?
i got it to boot up but the olny issue is that are sound issues on ps1, saturn and dreamcast. Not on the lower or higher end systems. Also, i tried this on my medion laptop but in the boot menu it does not show the hard drive.
I've done what you said and disabled sercure boot I got only once a image of batocera for a second and it's loading into windows do you know could be wrong or what I'm doing thanks
I have a laptop's internal HDD converted to external with usb and i've installed batocera on it. But not booting up i've done flashing it with balena itcher also i've tried installiong batocera on it from another batocera installed usb that worked perfect
Did you ever get this working? Converting SSDs into internal/external doesn't matter. They are the same thing, one just uses a SATA/USB adapter. Anyway, I'm encountering the same issue. I've made a Windows/Linux dual boot before which had no issue. The difference is, back then I used a disk partition tool to allocate space on a single SSD in the laptop. I'm running HP Pavilion gaming now, using an external disk to (try to) boot Batocera from. I also used the Balena etcher tool which was recommended, and everything flashed smoothly. I can see from Windows that the drive has Batocera installed. The problem is, no matter what I do in BIOS, it refuses to appear on the boot list. I'm about to try one more thing, which is to disable secure boot.
Theoretically...So if I take a hdd from an old laptop (still with OS and files from when last run) I can connect it via USB. Direct boot sequence to this hdd and it would be like starting old laptop?
Yep
what will now happen to the internal hard drive? can you access it when you boot externally?
Excellent video
Thanks
Can you just access it from my computer and just click on the hard drive and go on it that way
i can boot it but not when i am using usb hub can u help with that i have powered usb hub
So when you change the boot order it will now boot to the USB Hard Drive if one is plugged into USB. If nothing is present in the USB port I assume it will boot to your internal hard drive? Thanks in advance!
Can anyone confirm this?
I had this problem after upgrading to version 36. Remove all HDD plug it straight in alone still doesn’t work. Turn out it was my graphic card wasn’t supported in Batocera Linux once switch over. 😂
Since we changed the bood order what do I have to do to keep using my regular OS
Just disconnect the external hard drive and it'll default right back to your os drive or manually go back in and just change the boot order back to the internal option
on Hp probook laptops the bios key is esc
Can you boot the hard drive and use the HDMI?
what version of batocera do you use, and what size image is it
Typically 33 or 35 I have several different images so I go back and forth. I haven't tried 36 yet. Not a huge fan of updates as they usually don't do much but mess up existing game collections.
@@RetroGamingGuy my favorite is v33z. Had issues with v35. Light gun for v36 is pretty amazing
For me it works until I disconnect the hard drive and boot into Windows normally, it just resets it to the drive where windows is installed. (MSI z790-i)
Hello
Can i boot a external hd from ps3?
I have similar 512 gigs it just stays with batocera image nothing load.
i did the entire process but later shut the computer down.... but now on start up it doesnt pic the haird disk right away i have to repeat the process everytime ???
👍
I have an Asus z790 Motherboard anyone know where to disable boot security? Batocera loads up the image but then goes black screen.
I had the same problem. Try a Different older graphic card. Work for me.
DEMOLITON RANCH INTRO MUSIC ?????
Still having Difficulties doing this with a Ninpogi mini PC. For some reason the Batocera flash screen pops up then the screen just goes blank.
Mine is doing the same thing.
@@wpinke I can't find a solution
@@goldenaxe1986 I believe it may be a graphics card issue as the hard drive works on my old 2007 Toshiba.
@@wpinke on a Mini P.c. you don't have Much choice. Agreed It works on main P.c. but I've been seeing vids of it working on the same mini P.c. as I have & am trying to use it with
Also small retro games shouldn't need much In The way of graphics
Did I do something wrong nou i have a blue BitLocker screen
You have to disable device encryption in settings before you do these steps. You can reenable it when you’re done
is there a way to connect this to tv????
💀
