    TL;DR - We can learn the following things from this experiment:
    A) Caps are generated once every 24 in-game hours. Fast traveling, waiting, and sleeping do not count.
    B) Having at least one level 4 shop in your settlement will generate 50 caps a day.
    C) Having MORE than one level 4 shop in a settlement will NOT generate more than 50 caps a day. In this example, I had well over 10 active shops. Still only 50 caps.
    D) Shops do NOT require un-assigned settlers to generate caps. Shops will generate the same amount of caps whether your settlers are assigned or not assigned.
    E) The amount of caps your shops produce is NOT influenced by the number of settlers you have. A settlement with 1 assigned shop and 5 settlers will produce the same amount of caps (50) as a settlement with 15 shops and 36 settlers.
    F) The happiness of your settlement appears to have no impact. Granted, I only tested this with settlements at 77 happiness and above. I don't know if extremely low settlement happiness has any impact or not.

      +ClassyManIAm Great bit of analysis of the game mechanics. There I was slower growing numerous settlements populations, in the hope of a good revenue stream later on in the game. Now I can just focus on jet production to gain funds. Fantastic work.

    • @oxhorn
      @oxhorn  8 лет назад +36

      +The Boss No, each shop workbench will only report its own caps. So you'll never open up a workbench and see scrap or caps from other settlements.

    • @degen83
      @degen83 8 лет назад +67

      The way supply lines work is that each workshop only shows the resources in that particular settlement. When you use supply lines between settlements, those resources are only pooled when you try to build things.
      For example if you have 66 wood in Sanctuary Hills and 10 wood in Red Rocket, workshop in Sanctuary shows 66 wood and Red Rocket shows 10 wood. But when you go to either and you try to build something, it will show you have 76 wood.

    • @JolanXBL

      So all you need is at least 1 shop at level 4, with 1 NPC running it. Does the shop need to be level 4? Because those need a thousand or 2 just to build :/. Pretty useless if you're building for just the caps.

    • @degen83
      @degen83 8 лет назад +68

      Jolan XBL There are no level 4 shops you can build. The most you can build is level 3. Certain shops become level 4 shops when they have specific NPC's working them, but you just assign the certain NPC to the corresponding Emporium they are good at and thus the Emporium becomes level 4.
      If you are building shops for the caps you need to understand it is a long term investment, maybe making like 50 caps per day per settlement. That doens't sound like a lot but if you build the shops t hen go and play throuhg a few quests or dungeon crawls time i game will pass fairly quickly and you will stack up the caps.
      Also the shops in your settlements allow you to sell things to them too, so if you have a bunch of stuff, aid, junk, weapons, etc that you don't want and for whatever reason don't wan to scrap you can sell them to the shops in your settlements.
      You could even do the purified water trick, and sell purifiedwaters to your shops.
      Shops are a long term cap generator, not a short term one. They will eventually pay for themselves, but it will take a while in game to do so.

    Generally I've made far more caps scavenging and trading then I have thru settlements. After 250 hours of game play I finally started creating stores in settlements. SOME of the stores are very useful in trading with yourself. For instance the shop that is labeled "General Trader" can have several hefty 'shipments" in them, so I don't have to wait for other vendors around the map to get their supplies again, plus I get all of their 600 - 800 caps selling off the armor/weapons I've scavenged off my kills. SO MANY ways to play this amazing game. I'm currently over 300 hours in and at level 98.
    IDK about you guys but I'm constantly creating ballistic weave clothing and head wear for my settlement guards and provisioners, plus giving them the better weapons I find on my kills. I don't use any of the power armor at all for myself. Sanctuary has a good dozen power armor suits just sitting there rusting. lol!
    AND thank you for the great vids, I'm learning lots! Thumbs up!

    Also, another aside: I remember coming back once to The Castle and I have my shops in the hallway by the workbench; where the two shops I removed were I replaced with park benches and the food shop is at the end of the hall to the left in one of the big rooms and after gardening work and the other shops close that one stays open and I see almost everyone going to that 'restaurant' I created in there. Some sitting at the park benches I put in there, too, others standing in line. It was cool to see that. Down the hall from there I have in one of the empty rooms with the three sinks a bathroom. I put three toilets on each side and a partition in the middle with paintings hanging up and a small table with a vase sitting on it, on each side. Just outside I have on the archways a men's sign and on the opposite a woman's sign and I have seen men use the one side designated for men and women using the one designated for them. Also cool.

  • @b1laxson

    The normal cap method I use does benefit from multiple types of stores in one settlement. This is by selling mass produced water or crops to your own stores. You do need to visit the settlements to access their local workshop cloud to get the materials. This also makes raids more likely so it is recommended to do this at only a few of your high defense settlements.

      yes, because you can convert every object that you want into "static mesh" (physics doesn't aplly). the mod is called oc decorator, you can craft those items if you already have a real one or convert the one you have into static.
      Only use this mod if you want a real "specific" placement of your objects like "yes, i want this cigrrette box to be here above the table on the left, and then this beatufill glass beside".
      And if you are not interested in a hardcore personalized placements of your objects you have other mods like "do it yourshelf" where you have in a new category, empty shelves and other category for itemes already converted into static mesh that can fit and snap into those empty shelves. For example a basket with some weapons, folded clothes and armor ready to snap into those shelves, and many more... kitchen objets, ammo, helmets.... i use this mod it's add some inmersion lore friendly to a guard post or the workshops. There is another one that iirc is called creative clutter that offers the same but with some other objects like functionals kitchens or fridge with items inside
      my english is a mess, sorry! but i hope this could help you man

    There really is no reason to do this when you can just sell water. I have 3 industrial water generators at my base so I get 90 water basicly every time I check my workbench. I have never seen it go past 100 so I assume that is a sort of cap. However I can abuse the shit out of it.
    Step 1: Build the 3 industrial water purifiers.
    Step 2: Wait long enough that you produce 90 water.
    Step 3: Fast travel to Diamond City and sell it all for about 1000 caps.
    Step 4: Fast travel back to your settlement, the time you took fast traveling should have been enough to produce another 90.
    Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 as long as you like to get crap tons of caps.
    You can use your own shops in your settlement to maximize the value of the water but you have to wait in a chair with that method and invest heavily into 2 perks.

Of course I could do it only with Vault-Tec Workshop (it's reactors are better than original generators) and Place Everywhere (maybe I could place more purifier on the shoreside, but I just put all of them in one place, at the first purifier's place)

    Very interesting I use Scavenging stations as a means of adding extra patrols to my current settlement at Starlight Drive-in. I have used the barn foundation to make walls similar to the city of Highbourne from the old PS2 game Everquest Online Adventures.
    Well I definitely learned something new and at level 52 I will finally have level 4 shops. On another note I wonder if Scavenging stations can be rug glitched into foundation walls to give the impression that settlers are repairing the walls?

    One benefits I found out about shops and supply lines is after you have shops and don't loot the caps for awhile they add up nice!y. Then when you build shops in new settlements, the caps cost comes from the workshop and nothing comes out of your pocket

    @robertgagne8892 Год назад +2

    I know this video is now many years old, in 2022! But, I just felt I could add my input here, anyhow, as I think this may be relevant!
    The way I have handled my settlements, from the very FIRST settlement I managed, was to ALWAYS INSURE that every single member of each settlement was in fact ASSIGNED A FUNCTION. I don't know, it's just me being my OCD self, I guess...
    Now, after having made that point clear, I just always KNEW that shops generated income, with all settlers assigned. Because my settlements ALWAYS made caps! So, it really never occurred to me to even IMAGINE that a settlement might actually "require" an unassigned settler to make the settlement shops function as an income source! Quite the contrary, I would have felt the exact opposite to be the case...
    So, I guess what I'm saying is - If one plays the game, as I always imagined it was INTENDED to be played, by the game designers, one would really never have a reason to wonder if unassigned settlers were actually necessary...for me, players SHOULD somehow "feel the need" to insure settlers are in fact being put to good use within their settlements! That is just how I see it, of course.
    Where, then, I find myself asking, did you come up with that idea??? It seems a little "counter-intuitive", to say the least, what you presumed would actually be the case; why would anyone THINK unassigned settlers would help a settlement produce income? What is the "logical" basis for the belief? This is, in my mind, the very definition of a FREELOADER, and thus should be a BURDEN, rather than any type of BENEFIT, to a settlement.
    I'm just curious as to what the FOUNDATION for your belief was, as it is interesting to me that such a belief should actually have sounded "reasonable" to a gamer with the large amount of gaming experience, such as you, possess!
    What prompted you to think unassigned settlers were necessary? Were you TOLD this? Did you read it somewhere? Or was it just a belief mistakenly made, without outside input? Again, I'm simply curious, is all...
    It is to me very interesting how erroneous beliefs become generally accepted, in some cases. I know this idea would NEVER have occurred to me on MY own, but, again, it's simply how I come at the game with a bit of an OCD nature! But I can also see how, if I were to READ this, somewhere and from someone I felt should actually KNOW about these types of things, that I might also carry this idea.
    I just couldn't help but notice that you seemed realistically SHOCKED by the fact that an unassigned settler was NOT necessary, causing me a bit of a chuckle. No, I wasn't LAUGHING at you, it just seemed funny that when finding that out, you didn't seem to feel it was in any way "obvious", all along!!! I guess it comes down to the way different people perceive the same situation...
    In closing, I love all of your content, You do a very fine job, your speaking voice is very easy to listen to, and each video I have watched has always been interesting, informational and very humorous as well! Keep up the excellent work!

    I made Sanctuary my capitol, my adhesives farm, and my water farm, red rocket is my gunner farm, abernathy is secondary source for adhesive farming, then I have tenpines, the drive in, outpost zimonga, and greygarden set up just for population and defense. I didnt intend of having more than three or four as I am playing survival.
    Red Rocket attracts pairs of gunners every so often, I often find them dead on the road just past the bridge when I leave sanctuary.
    I now generate more water than I can sell, even when purchasing all the junk and shipments from Carla and my lvl 4 general store.
    That being said, my melee based power armor wearing character is lvl 82 and we have not yet gone after Kellog, started nuka world, ended the robot plague (I didnt want to start that one, but I came across the ambush site and it started.... didnt need those random encounters when I carry just a baseball bat...).
    Prolly the most rewarding and fun run through in my 4 thousand plus hours of playing fallout. Start with 9 charisma, 9 luck, some strength and agility. Then go for it!
    P.S. SO much more fun with Oxhorn's insights, breakdowns, and examples.

      (Sorry i’m really bored, but you don’t have to read all of this but please read the top)
      I feel so bad that you wrote all of that and it will probably never get the likes it deserves because this video is 8 years old but hopefully it dose.
      Ps idk if you said your doing this but I might as well tell you about it anyways if you have the nuka-word dlc you can do these two thing I know of, to get a good amount of caps for minimum effort, you can go though the whole thing/main quest and then set up some raider settlements Im pretty sure you have to take over three and then you need to talk/forcing a segment into supplying you, you need a couple of those then you get like 200-300 caps a day/24 hours and there is a room on the look out thing and there’s a bed that’s you can sleep to fast forward the 24 hours then you get the 200-300 caps and rinse and repeat. the second thing you can do while you do the first thing you can make like ten of these cems dispenser and it will give you 1-3 cems a day, times that by ten thenI will be 10-30 cems a day and then you go sell them and then you’re a millionaire just like that, also thank you so much if you read all of my yapping

    Not sure if it works the same way in F4, but in some older bethesda titles proximity to the area also plays a part in a lot of these sorts of things. For example, you can wait in an area indefinitely (both normally and using the timer) and loot will never recycle. Once you leave the map cell though, it doesn't matter how you wait as long as you've waited the set amount of time.

    Interesting observation. You can't have multiples of a given shop in a given settlement. The game will generate all the stands you want, and you can assign settlers to all of them, but there will be a single shared pool of caps/goods between all of them. So, if you buy/sell until, say, trader 1 has 10 caps left and you've got all of his junk, when you visit trader 2, he'll have 10 caps in his inventory, and no junk.

    This makes me think of some player's lament that the settlement system isn't as in-depth as they'd like. I mean, it would make sense if the caps you made was related to, not just how many shops you had, but the quality of shops and how connected your settlements were. Maybe it would make the configuration of the trade routes have an effect.
    But alas, this was more or less a side activity that has become really popular. Who knows, maybe they'll make a whole game about it someday. Kind of like a cross between sim city and a strategy battle game?
