so, don't wait! skip to another video. but you want the knowledge that person gives you for free and you criticism him as well. i can't believe what kind of people are out there!!!!!!
Killer post. Way off the beaten path, glad you grabbed the cam and shared the madness. I learned a few new things about the good ol' cd. Too bad vinyl isn't as forgiving as I have a couple lp's I'd like to see spin around that well worn smoothie pad! Great fun brudda, exactly what's needed as a quick departure from the norm. Enjoy the rest of the weekend! - Lj
This is a great process you have worked out. Basically the same method as the $1000 machines. A word of caution about the top side of CDs; most are silk screened but some are decals. I once soaked a CD in water to loosen up the schmutz on top. Looked like drops of dried soup. When I pulled the disc out after about 1 hr all of the text slid right off. Bummer, it was a collectible:( Great share! I'm happy to know when I add a similar tool to my workshop, I'll also have a CD restoration machine.
I have used Scratch Out for buffing out scratches on my bike. I have also used it on the bottom lower parts of the doors on my car. I have also used it on some really crappy CD's that I got from somebody and I was AMAZED on how great they looked and played also. A lot of people thought they you would damage a disc by putting chemicals on them but it is quite the opposite. This is how the used CD stores clean their CD's. Engineers use Brasso for cleaning. I dig Scratch Out better. Rob/Boston
Thank you sir, bought a disc at the local thrift and didn't notice all the scratches till I got out home and, I was bummed, till I saw for video going to give this a try!
this is freaking awesome duane, im going to have to try this !!! Taps Plastic is a cool place, ive had them costomize plastic for me before. it looks like you are holding that cd tight. cool video
I know some people may think that this is a lot of work if you have about 200 CD's to clean. But as soon as you do a few of them and see how nice they come out you will want to do the rest. Question: Do you think this method would ruin the tracking on DVDs? Please let me know what you think. Thanks Duane, very nice productive post~ Rob/Boston
dude thanks so much my xbox destroyed a dusk and I got a little mini thing and put used your technique no problems at ask. .people need to know about you
I found a Kick Axe cd, doesen't appear scratched very much but still won't play, always reads disc error. I notice the silver is coming off the edge of the cd a tiny bit. Maybe if the data layer is damaged it cannot be restored. Although I have a cd-r with a big chunk of the silver missing and it still plays.
brasso works amazing. just use it as a polish, thats it. the more you repeat the job the deeper the scratch you can repair. its a very gentle abrasive you see and it removes a very fine layer from the disc. try it, it wont fail you. you can buy brasso as a liquid or with a brillo pad type. i just use the liquid with some toilet tissue.
Lazerrus, Can I send myDVD to you to clean/repair? Of course I will pay you. I have a dvd with pictures (very special ones) of my late husband. My children asked me recently if I still had it. They want it so badly and I'm afraid I will ruin it if I try to repair. Thoughts?
Thanks, that's great only one product was applied (Scratch Out, I think saw that at the hardware that while looking for a solution). If only we have a resurfacing pro service here. I've bought a lot of products to try to remove it (PlastX, 3M rubbing compound, Microtex nano something for polishing, grits of sandpaper up to 2500 wet polish, the usual metal polish, toothpaste), spent enough to buy a buffing wheel for my adjustable speed angle grinder (which already has a velcro attachment for sandpaper). Minimizing my cost, by the way could this be done by hand with a microfibre polishing cloth and rubbing compound and polish, (PlastX being the most expensive) stuff I already have? Or I have to buy Scratch Out and the buffing wheel for either my adjustable speed angle grinder and adjustable speed drill. Thank you. God bless, Rev. 21:4
I used Avon Nail Experts acetone free Conditioning nail enamel remover to clean a DVD disc but it left white imprint marks from the cloth's texture on the disc. Now the CD Reader on my computer won't read the disc. When I try to open the disc under My Computer it tells me there's no disc in the CD Reader. How can I fix this please??? I really need to recover this DVD. Many thanks in anticipation.
CDs can be difficult AF to bend in half and break! Our old CD trading store used a bench grinder motors with polishing wheels. so many unplayable/uninstallable games good to go again.
Hey Lazerrus when feeder released the album swim in 1996 it was a mini album but they released in 2001 but I'm not sure is it resurfaced or reissue so if you have the 2001 album swim by feeder can you play it to mic sure if it is resurfaced or reissue
Yes this method will buff any scratches out, however you are making dips and peaks on the surface, ie optical imperfections and cd players wont read all the information, with the result in a loss of music quality. But for most people who don't care they wont hear the difference.Thats why proper disc resurfaces cost a lot, they do it properly.
BS. CD music is DIGITAL so the player can either read it or it can't. If it can't it skips. There's no halfway house. Vinyl theory does not apply to CDs.
Lozzie74 is correct. However there is another cause for concern with what you said. You are running the risk of a disc shattering when it is spun up to speed with an improper resurfacing.
OK looks good but not many folks will want to buy a polisher like the one spining here. Looks like it may be difficult to find the correct "soft" wheel.
Hey Duane could you do a video on cleaning Vinyl too? Just wondering if there's a cheap way or a feasible way to get rid of scratches! Keep up the good work, oh and awesome Blind Guardian tattoo!
The reason why this works with CD's and DVD's is because the information, music, or movie that is stored on these discs is under a clear polycarbonate plastic layer. When this layer gets scratched the laser can't read the information under the scratch. The information is still there. It just can't be read. With vinyl records, the music is etched into the vinyl itself and read with a needle that makes physical contact with the stored music. There is no protective layer at all. So if you get a scratch on these, you lose that part of the music and the needle gets stuck on that area of the record. There is no fix for that.
the man tries to explain as much as he believes that is good for us to understand the process. if you want don't see the video. nobody forces you my friend.
Best disc polish video so far. Thanks for showing a good shot of the finished result.
For more than two minutes you've been telling me you're going to show me how to resurface a disc. Can't wait.

Thank you, Sir, My DVD's now play flawlessly
I love fearless DIYers.
This would probably work for taking surface scratches off the cloudy cd jewel cases also?

thanks for the helpful advice saved me my games and collectibles also thanks again
this is freaking awesome duane, im going to have to try this !!! Taps Plastic is a cool place, ive had them costomize plastic for me before. it looks like you are holding that cd tight. cool video
Duane, I am impressed! thanks for sharing, although I don't have the equipment to do it, and only one cd with a problem:S
Have you tried the hard stick compound? I'm torn which way to go

what pads did you use here? What grade...ply and material? Flannel.....70 ply?? 16+ minutes and no mention that i caught.
Do u think that if I found a way. I could use like a car buffer
thats greatness, thanks for the tip duane!-gary/texas

Nick Barnes agreed, been using brasso to take scratches out of cds since cds first came out in the early 80s.
I wonder if a Dremel buffing tip would work?
Video actually starts at 09:25, just an fyi
Brutal. I gave up.

thank you for sharing this tip
What brand, type, and thickness of buffing pads do you recommend?
the top label can come off but if you scratch the top label the cd is done
Yeah I was thinking the same thing......all the data is on the "ART WORK" side...personally I don't see any reason to polish this side at all.
Need juice still ? I am hoping I can do this local hopeful Home Depot even knows . So buffing , resurfacing is the same thing ?
Did the disc have any spiral scratches on it after resurfacing?
Nope since it does not do spiral cleaning. The pad runs from the center of cd till the edge.

3:47 in and he's still talking about what he's going to show us in his video. GET ON WITH IT! Now at 4:28. Skip to 4:35
Have you ever done this with Blu-rays?
Hey Lazerrus when feeder released the album swim in 1996 it was a mini album but they released in 2001 but I'm not sure is it resurfaced or reissue so if you have the 2001 album swim by feeder can you play it to mic sure if it is resurfaced or reissue
Skip to 4:38 if you want to see the technique.
Thx also
09:25 if you wanna get straight to the cleaning part
Dude that is so awesome
