    Wet/Dry abrasive paper. Sold at the link below(every grade you need, and cheaper), or you can buy it in individual grades for more money at a local auto parts store or Walmart. The longer you spend wet sanding with the 3000 grit or higher abrasive paper, the better the end result will be. Thanks for watching

    It worked for me. I saved a $460 cd I got from Discogs. I somehow scratched the hell out of it during a move, which is not a proud moment considering the price tag and rarity of the album. However I’m still left with lots of tiny scratches, and my burner keeps ejecting it. It plays fine in a CD player now though, oddly. I did use Brasso which I had on hand instead of headlight polish like yourself. Would I need to sand longer and possibly harder with the higher grit?

    • @electronicsNmore

    Did you try it on ps1 games? I've tried on one that was at least starting but it's not starting anymore. I think it's not polished enough because it's not very bright like yours, but i've been polishing it for a while with wet paper. Maybe it's my paste, is it really important? On your video your disc seemed already very good after the 3000 grit paper.

    Will this method work for a single deep scratch at the edge of a music CD or do I need to go with a lower number on the first sandpaper? Also you never did show how you cleaned off the excess polish afterwards. Did you run it under the tap water and dry it off with a microfiber cloth?

  • @davidsimons1377

    I assume its wet & dry sandpaper? The only snag might be depending how valuable or irreplaceable the disc is, the materials, especially the headlight stuff may be dearer than the disc! Pretty miraculous though. I didn't know this was possible.

    There does seem to be two schools of thought on the DIRECTION of the sanding/restoring motion on the disc surface. Some are saying that one should only go from EDGE TO EDGE in a straight line, whereas others are specifically calling for going in a CIRCULAR pattern, as demonstrated here, much as one would clean an LP record. I take it has to do with how the laser reads the data imbedded. Which is right, or does it truly matter?

    Do not do this on blurays. Their construction is radically different than CD/DVD. It will damage/remove the incredibly thin hardcoat, the data layer is very near the hardcoat. Unlike CD where the data is near the label side, and DVD where the data is near the middle.

    I tried this method on 2 PS3 games, and the end result was a fail. After a lengthy amount of time using the 3000 and 5000 grit paper and the recommended turtle wax scratch remover, I was not able to restore the original sheen on the discs' surface. However, the deep scratches were gone after using the recommended sand paper grits. Still, this was not good enough for the game console to read the disc.
    I strongly advise against this method since there is no guarantee that your CD or DVD will be repaired.

  • @ExStaticBass
    @ExStaticBass 7 лет назад +5

    This being something I have a lot of experience in, watching you use sand paper makes me cringe a little. Yes, it's a bit more work but strait fine cutting compound really is the best option. Reducing the thickness of the acrylic layer too much can significantly change the focal distance of the laser from the data layer of the disk by changing it's refractive properties. Most DVD, CD, or game ROM readers expect a certain thickness between the read layer and the optical surface of the disk. If we change that too much it fails to line things up correctly at which point you have a coaster instead of a disk. Using a soft cloth and fine cutting compound is the best way because it takes so little off the surface. Anything more aggressive than that can cause serious problems. I've personally "taken the circle of doom" off of Xbox 360 games with just cutting compound and the game worked flawlessly after I was done.
    The aforementioned circle of doom is what happens to a disk when you move or knock over the Xbox 360 console with the disk spinning at high speed. This leaves a nasty circle up to a quarter of an inch wide in the middle of the read area of the disk. It's nasty, deep, and hard to repair because the tray actually welds plastic to the surface of the disk. I can promise you my method works. I've done it thousands of times without issue. The sandpaper though, I wouldn't do that to a disk more than once in it's lifetime. I wouldn't recommend using a Dremel or other rotary tool with a buffing wheel either. It's extremely easy to burn a divot in the disk or crack it from heat stress. Take some friendly and sound advice from someone who's had some serious headaches over this sort of thing. Just use fine cutting compound. Work your way down to ultrafine if you're so inclined, just don't use sandpaper or power tools...

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 лет назад +5

      I can promise you my method works, unless the disc has become degraded over time and the data layer is damaged. :-) Unfortunately fine cutting compound will NOT remove deeper scratches. Reducing the thickness(slightly) of the acrylic layer makes no difference. The acrylic isn't convex or concave, it's flat. The laser is directed through the flat acrylic layer and focused on the center of the disc using lenses. As long as the disc isn't warped, you can sand away. The distance between the focused laser and data layer never changes. All the focusing is done with the laser, not the acrylic layer of the disc. If the disc has scratches, then the laser cannot focus where it's supposed to focus, which is why you need to make sure the disc is very clear and smooth.

      Yes, many will remove fine scratches from a car's clearcoat finish. Make sure the abrasive paper is wet, and you keep rinsing. Use steady pressure, and near the end use lighter pressure. No reason to have more scratches if you do a good job and finish it off with the scratch/swirl remover.
