Hi Swim Life Guru! I'm a 12 year old swimmer and I have been practicing this turn for 3 weeks. I talked to my coach about it and she discussed the pros and cons about this turn with me. She told me that this turn definitely drops time for your IM but it does take your breath away. I'm going to try out the turn at my upcoming swim meet on the 23. I will definitely keep on practicing this turn at practice and tell you how it goes! Thanks!
Thanks! I definitely agree with your coach, this turn does take a lot of air 😂, which is why I only do this turn for the 200 IM and not the 400. Please let me know how your meet goes!!
Thanks so much for the tip...I've never seen this kind of flip turn during my 50 years as a swimmer :) - it has taken me lots of practice, especially because I have had to do the turn regardless of which hand touches the wall first...huge thanks again for sharing this video.
This is my favorite back to breast turn 😁 My moms an official and the first time she saw it she flipped out 😂😂😂 it's my favorite turn and lots of fun, suggest trying it to more advanced swimmers looking for a new challenge! Great vid, very informative
Thanks a lot, I love your videos! I'm 37 yo, I'm from Colombia, and practiced swimming from 10 yo to 20yo, it was 10 years as a competitive swimmer, but I left it for 17 years!!! I did some mountain biking and crossfit. I came back last year to swimming, and had 2 competitions in "masters" championships (35-40 years old category) on my own, and I'm surprised for how much swimming has evolved! Well, resourses like this are so incredibly useful for me! Thanks a lot!
Hi! I'm from Turkey and ı love you! I'm an 12 years old swimmer. After 1 week,I'm going to an important race.My major individual medley, but I couldn't return the position back into the breaststroke position. Thanks to you I learned. And most watching the video even though I couldn't understand.Thank you.
Thanks for posting this video. I’ve been trying to nail this turn for almost 10 yr. to drop time off my IM. I had a more clear understanding of the turn after watching this video. I haven’t used it in a race yet. in practice, I pass up other swimmers who I’ve held even with during IM sets.
Hello sweetheart! I am a 48 year old woman in Australia and have just started doing laps again to lose weight. I came across you by chance and just have to tell you honey that you are a true credit to your parents! I'm sure they are truly proud of the way you conduct yourself! You are also such a graceful swimmer darling and all of your videos I watch make me giggle at the bloopers but you inspire people and that is a true gift at your age! Many blessings to you and your family sweetheart!
as long as your full palm firmly touch the wall, the swimming umpires have no reason to disqaulify u, but just scraping the wall with tip of fingers is easy to see and may be disqualified.
Nick Zhang - that's true; as long as you touch the wall (finger tips or full hand) it doesn't matter, but sometimes if you just touch the wall with your finger tips, the official may not see it and then DQ you because they think you didn't touch. Touching with your full hand mostly has to do with helping you get your legs over, though, so you have a solid base to push into. If you just touch with your finger tips, your hand could slip down the wall and mess up your turn. :)
Fantastic video! You really break this very difficult turn down nicely. Thank you for revealing the things that coaches 'talk' about. I love 'seeing' how things are done and done well! I want to see a video on the breaststroke turn with a focus on how to optimize coming into and out of the wall. Thanks!!
I used this turn for years, the only person crazy enough to use it all the time. I never knew the name was suicide, but it can feel like that when you're out of breath
Thank you for making this video!! I have always wanted to try this turn but never comfortable to do it. Watching this video makes it look less complicated so thank you!!!!
Hi at my training we do a sidewards bc to brest turn where you go into the wall on your back/side with your arm over your head the do a sidewards tumble turn! I've Gould that it's faster than this one, you should deffo try it but it's very hard to do at first xx
Hey, this is indeed a very fun turn and I enjoy swimming the IM just because of it xD. Anyway this was very helpful for me since I didn't know you can get disqualified if you fully submerge; in fact I tend to stop kicking when approaching the wall but now I'm going to pay attention about it. :D
+Yannai Michael It's the more advanced version of this turn, which I mentioned in the video. :) it's definitely a lot trickier, so I'm working on it so I can post a video about it!
Nick Zhang - For this turn, you don't go on your side. Yannai was asking why some Olympians do a version of the back-to-breast flip where they go on their side, which is not this turn. I have a newer video up on the advanced crossover turn where you do go on your side because that's how the turn is executed. Coming off deep/shallow doesn't have to do with the turn itself, but how you prefer to push off based on how strong your underwater breaststroke pull is and how far out it takes you. :)
+Kawaii Kun Nope, if you try this turn for a back to back turn, you will get disqualified. I have a video coming that shows back to back turns. Stay tuned! :-)
Hi SwimLifeGuru! great tip to add on my workout swimming routine, definitely I'll give it a try next time! Do you have more tricks? Thanks again, I love your videos and your cat. The bloopers make me really laugh! :)
+Angel Tellez Thank you!!!! I'm glad someone stays for the bloopers, I always wonder if anyone does. They're really fun to piece together! :-) Definitely have more tips and tricks coming in the future.
For freestyle, it's a flip turn...which is different from this back to breast turn. This turn is specifically designed ONLY for backstroke to breaststroke.
hi swim life guru , I'm an 18 year old swimmer , I was wondering , is that turn really legal in swimming , could you get disqualified , I got an open meet in 3 days at Coventry (uk) and If I understand you need a backstroke touch to legally be able to turn like you just shown ? tell me more please , I'm scared that if I do it and they disqualified me , my coach will get mad at me for a month , thx to answer as quick please :), otherwise AWESOME VIDEO , LOVE IT !!!!!
The turn is definitely legal as it is the turn done by Olympians. I made this video going off the specific USA Swimming rules, so there might be some tweaks in FINA’s rules. But, the turn in general is legal. Please talk to your coach before doing this turn in a meet, and make sure you’re completely comfortable with it! :)
+Sarah Yoon Several people have asked me about this. I probably won't because I really don't want this channel to be about my times. I want it to be more about helping other swimmers. :-)
Thanks! However, from what I can see, nobody nowdays use this turn in competitions. Isn't it better to start learning the advanced version from the beginning already?
+Scottie Ferguson The more advanced version is harder to learn and there is a much higher chance of being DQ'd if not done properly. I have a lot of subscribers who want more beginner tutorials. :) This turn is a much faster alternative to an open turn.
I suspect it's because when you're doing a 400IM and have to hold your breath whilst turning and until you've finished the breastroke pullout, you just want to complete the pullout as fast as you can so you can breathe. It used to just be known as the backstroke to breastroke turn; I guess it earned the name 'suicide turn'. The crossover turn is a newer turn; in the old days everyone did this turn.
i love you and this channel!! i'm a swimmer and i'm a national qualifier. this channel has helped me with many things. i want to thank you and i love you to the moon and back. i have a couple of questions. What's your instagram (if you have one), and how old are you???
+Claire McCalmont I think most people assume this turn is for advanced swimmers only, but it's not. I learned it when I was ten! I think the biggest thing to remember is that it uses a lot of air. You have to be able to hold your breath long enough to flip and properly do the underwater breaststroke pull. I never do this turn in 400 IM because I'm so out of breath! :-)
+SwimLifeGuru Wow! I just heard of it , obviously. I told my coach about it while we were working on turns and everyone just looked at me funny! My coach of course knew what i was talking about but I felt kinda smart! Thanks to you!!!!
+Caroline B A regular flip turn would put you on your stomach and then your feet would hit the wall as you flip, which doesn't count as an official backstroke finish. This turn is legal because in an IM, each stroke must have an official finish. Meaning, you have to touch the wall on your back in the backstroke leg of the IM. And then for breast, you have to push off on your stomach for it to be legal. As of right now, this is one of the fastest turns to do it. The advanced version of this turn (that I just posted) is even faster. Hope that helps!
As long as you finish into the wall still on your back before you roll into the flip, it's legal. That's why this turn can be so hard to do legally, since it's a very fine line of finishing on your back and flipping over. 😘
+Jeff Jotz Yup! Just spin around on your butt like a bucket! Actually, I should do a video on this... :) Many people think a bucket turn is the same thing as the back to breast turn, but it isn't. Since it is slower than an open turn or suicide flip, I only use this if I'm getting an official split in the middle of a race (like an official 100 back time during a 200 back race) and I have to do a legal finish yet quickly get off the wall to continue the race. I hope this helps!
Hey I’m sorry but I’m new to swimming and I’m scared for my first meet it’s today actually and I was like I feel like I can do this but idk wish me luck lol
Rule change for 2023 - You're now allowed to finish backstroke while fully submerged so now you have one less thing to worry about when doing this turn.

Wow, this just made my entire day!!! 🤗🤗 Thank you sooooooo much! 💞💞😘
Very good start for swimmers who have not learned to do the "Advanced turn" Or the "Crossover turn"
Yes I do the cross over turn
I had a swim meet yesterday and I did this turn and I was surprised I did not get disqualified
Awesome!! :)

+Swim Run Thank you! Adding that breaststroke turn to my list! :)
This will really help me especially when my coach makes us do IMs and all my coaches want us to flip turn so this will really help! Thanks!
I HAve been Swimming for 6 years! This is a video that i have raked the world for!! Thanks +SwimLifeGuru
+Swim Dad Thank you so much!! :-)
I tried this a few days ago, and I was able to do it the first couple times. I need to keep working on it though. Thanx for sharing.
I've been looking for this for forever!! Thank you so much!!
This video was very helpful! Can you do the advanced version video? I have perfected this one and now I would like to learn the advanced version.
Quite good honestly, I would definietly watch more guides from you.
+Mariusz Janus Thank you!
How beautiful! I can not do it. Looking steadily. And I'm practicing. Thank you for uploading.
This looks so cool! I'll try it out at practice tonight!👍🏊🏻
+Swimmer Girl That's great! I'd love to hear how it goes! :-)
Excellent video and explanation!!!
omg thx soooo much this helped me so much on my recent swim meet and i set a new team record!!! thanks so much for helping me inprove in my swim meet
+Ann's Hamsters OMG, that's awesome!!!! :-D
You are amazing and helping this old beginner immensely! How can I practice a back flip no hands in water.

👍😘
AFFASCINANTE, PERFETTO, COMPLIMENTI, grazie mille per bella dimostrazione...👍🌹🌹!!!
You make it look SO easy. I want to do that.
oh my gosh this is so useful i've been practicing this turn for like a week💓
Yay! Thank you!! 😍
I started learning this yesterday!!
you have no idea how much your video has helped me!

+Synthacon7 I love doing this turn in IM's also! Glad you like it! :-)
This helped a lot! Thanks
Thank you so much for the tips, I was searching for this for a time now, really helped !
Thank you! :)
Can you do a beginning swimmer tips or advice video?
+Melissa Vicente Yes! I'm trying to switch between posting beginner drills and more advanced drills. :)
How come the olympians go on their side instead?
It could be because they do it the normal way faster because they have practiced it a lot more.
Yannai Michael it's called a crossover turn, not a suicide turn
+Yannai Michael It's the more advanced version of this turn, which I mentioned in the video. :) it's definitely a lot trickier, so I'm working on it so I can post a video about it!
SwimLifeGuru, is it called the cross over turn?
Nick Zhang - For this turn, you don't go on your side. Yannai was asking why some Olympians do a version of the back-to-breast flip where they go on their side, which is not this turn. I have a newer video up on the advanced crossover turn where you do go on your side because that's how the turn is executed. Coming off deep/shallow doesn't have to do with the turn itself, but how you prefer to push off based on how strong your underwater breaststroke pull is and how far out it takes you. :)
can you use this doing back to back? or does it only work on back to breast?
+Kawaii Kun Nope, if you try this turn for a back to back turn, you will get disqualified. I have a video coming that shows back to back turns. Stay tuned! :-)
Do you have any videos or can u make any videos of sinking hips in backstroke because I need help with that.
Hi SwimLifeGuru! great tip to add on my workout swimming routine, definitely I'll give it a try next time! Do you have more tricks? Thanks again, I love your videos and your cat. The bloopers make me really laugh! :)

Thank you that was helpful 💖
I'll try this in swim meets if I can I'll commet again to tell you if I drop time . thanks for the advice .
how about that more advanced version you speak of??
This was the turn I was taught at like age seven or so. Probably earlier. I don't know why other coaches don't teach this one as much...
Do you have a drill or an idea to help practice this turn? PLEASE help!
I'm twelve and I know how to do this turn, but I'm never actually comfortable to use it. This video really helped!
+Claire Warmuth Yay!! :-)
I watch it as many time as I can so I understand . My question is how can you do that when your swimming in freestyle stroke
For freestyle, it's a flip turn...which is different from this back to breast turn. This turn is specifically designed ONLY for backstroke to breaststroke.
ok.thankyou
+Catherine Hand Thank you!
Learned this turn at training a couple years ago so I'm excited for the advanced video! Great video Xx
Is there any way that you can show us the regular (non-flip) back to breast turn?
whoooouw! Amo suas tecnicas, nice videos muito bons!

Awesome turn~~
I got the basics down sort of but I'm still not there yet if you know what I mean

+Sasha Kovacevic Thank you! My instagram is @SwimLifeGuru :)
Very very nice....... Thanks
whats your best stroke?
+Sasha Kovacevic I'm an IM'er so my best stroke changes. Right now my best stroke is breaststroke. :)
I don't know where to try this out
a pool
Start with the pool, i don't know...
Sarah Yoon If there is a pool you can get access to where you can do your own thing instead of being yelled at by a coach, I would do that
Alpha Sock hahahaha omg i feel you
Is there a difference beetween this "suicide turn" and a "crossover turn"? which one is legal? please someone explain....
oh shot this is the most lit turn ive ever seen
How do know when close to wall and to look?
Backstroke flags!
I never knew this existed!!
+Claire McCalmont I think most people assume this turn is for advanced swimmers only, but it's not. I learned it when I was ten! I think the biggest thing to remember is that it uses a lot of air. The suicide turn is my favourite out of all of them to do I just find it so fun lol
I knowww! It’s so much fun!😋❤️
I really want to get this turn, because one of my coaches said, “Only the most elite swimmers can do this, you’re not ready for it.”
Go for it! Just practice it on your own and surprise your coach. You can definitely do it!
My 7 year old is practicing this with her club. She gets it but needs to kick harder. Thanks for the tips.
Can lots do this❓ and could you do another video on how else to legally flip other than that one❓ I can do but is taking little long to learn😴 lol
OMG! Thank You so much!!!!!
why do you do a flutter kick? I was taught to do dolphin kick.
I was taught to do dolphin kick on my finish
maybe your teacher was talking about finishing?
+Pickaxe Productions no it was for suicide turn cause it was specifically for this one meet that I had to learn how to do a suicide turn for.
Bailey Murray
oh Xb ok.
same here
Always had trouble with that one
it helped my im time alot
Awesome!! :)
Eyy I dropped 2 seconds on my 400 IM! I think this helped
I can do this now!
YAAAAAYYY!!!! 🎉🎉🎉 I'm so happy for you! Love this turn!!
Wath is your time in 200 im
Sweeeet I am trying to learn this right now, rrrrrrr
OMG JUST CAME BACK FROM MEET SWAM 100M IM SUB 1MIN. THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH
+Saad El Abdellaoui OMG!! Awesome! 👍🏻👍🏻
Christmas haul please
It worked!!!
YAY!👏🏻🎉
how is this turn legal because flip turns are not and I feel like they are a lot alike? please answer.
Over 90 degrees down before connection to wall
Wow this thing is awesome. I dropped 6 seconds and now I have a 1.00.45
We call it a bucket turn but I like the name u said way better
Isn't a bucket turn when you spin around on your butt from back-breast?
+Jeff Jotz Yup! Just spin around on your butt like a bucket! Actually, I should do a video on this... :) Many people think a bucket turn is the same thing as the back to breast turn, but it isn't. Since it is slower than an open turn or suicide flip, I only use this if I'm getting an official split in the middle of a race (like an official 100 back time during a 200 back race) and I have to do a legal finish yet quickly get off the wall to continue the race. I hope this helps!
WOW :) Thank you :)
This is the bucket turn
I’m going to try this in my 200 IM
Hey I’m sorry but I’m new to swimming and I’m scared for my first meet it’s today actually and I was like I feel like I can do this but idk wish me luck lol
I think it's easier if you do a dolphin kick instead of freestyle kicking before the turn.
This should help on my 400 meters IM
멋있다!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
On my swim team for IMS we don't do flip turns
Rule change for 2023 - You're now allowed to finish backstroke while fully submerged so now you have one less thing to worry about when doing this turn.
do the advanced one
what is your age
I LOVE THESE but I call them "bucket turns"
Bruhs I do this everytime just take some breath befove turning you dont need to touch the wall
이뻐요~^^
