Thanks a lot for great steps video, it’s very easy to learn in your way , I tried a lot to learn without a any result, but now I could do it in first time
Glad it helped!
In my opinion, this may be the hardest and also coolest turn in swimming (and also being the last one I learned by myself). Always afraid of ending my last stroke and having to turn to the less dominant side.
You can always adjust your strokes as you approach the wall. In the end, after much practice, it is best to be able to do this turn with either hand. Start with your dominant hand on the wall, first.
This was great. Thanks for teaching it Gary!
You are welcome!!
Beautiful!! 5 clear steps
Thank you! Hope you subscribe to our Lane 2 or 3 with many great videos available.

Saludos!! Ven a Florida a un campamiento de tecnicos.
thanks a lot for showing the correct ways to turn, the United States has a great tradition in the swim sports, Mexico has a tradition in diving thanks for teaching me greetings from Zacatlan
You are welcome, Daniel! Hope you will sign up for our subscription service. We have hundreds of great videos.
Learned this at camp in April down in the keys :) no longer ahead of the competition😂 thanks for showing this again
You bet!! Glad it helped your IM.
Amazing step by step processes!!
Thanks...we have found that these 5 steps are the best way to teach this transition.
We hope that you will encourage subscriptions to our Race Club membership. Lots of really good videos and articles.
Great video, I call it the twistover turn. This is really helpful as a backstroke turn video … especially compared to so many other videos that are not clear at all, or essentially say it’s hard so just keep trying and figure out what works for you. Yeah. I thought that until I saw this video. This one being helpful ironically ends with the instructor stating the two simmers who did a good job demonstrating (with great camera shots underwater!; critical to see)… the “ have a long way to go”? I guess that just means practice makes perfect (no perfection exists, so nearly perfect).
Thanks for watching! And yes, those athletes did a great job technically, they just need to get more comfortable with it so they can do the same thing quicker!
That is a tough skill explained very well,it looks more like a corkscrew twist action into a cartwheel ,will have to do more freeze-framing and practice in pool🙂👍
It takes a lot of time and practice. Good luck with it Brian!
2:23 now this what most coaches should have.
Can't learn this by watching great swimmers do it. It is just a big splash and blur. Very important to get it right.
This video is amazing it’s going to help me so much I am trying to learn how to do it and had no luck it was my first time trying it though so I bet it’ll get better with time and practice.thanks for the amazing explanation and video!!
Thanks for watching!
Revisiting this video from a few years ago, best video I’ve seen on how to do it. I’ve been working on this turn for quite some time now, but it confuses my brain because I’m still not used to it. Coach, your explanation is great - I’ve decided that I am doing it correctly, although still slow at it coming into the wall. Thanks for the video, I’ll keep working on it!😊
practice makes perfect!
This video is great. I learned lots from it. Thanks The Race Club! I have one question is that I feel the boy rotates over 90 degree (little bits) when his right arm touch the wall. My previous understanding is that you should let our back down and you can rotate but you cannot rotate over 90 degree before touch the wall. I am thinking the boy maybe DQ. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks guys. Have a nice holiday!!
You are correct. You cannot be more on your front than on your back before touching the wall. It's a very quick transition so make sure he is doing it legally before doing it again in a competition.
Where can i buy that microphone and those headphones? They're awesome!
We sell them on our website at www.theraceclub.com. I can't coach without them (very well).
It so cool, to be able to listen a coach, while you are swimming
Yes, we love our Swim Talkers. Can't coach as well without them
@@theraceclub My wife and I have had this idea for years! Would love the ability to talk to someone while they are swimming and help correct their style!
Is there any easier way to do this? I feel that i would be DQed by doing this
Give it a try first! Follow the steps from the video and try to master it. You'll need to do many of these in practice before using it in a meet.
I'm learning to be a judge and witnessed this turn for the 1st time at the weekend. Caught me off guard but I gave the benefit of the doubt. Just wondering opinions on 6'40"? DQ as on the breast (past 90')? 6, 39 def on the side before touch - legal.
It can be a tough one to call. In general, if the biceps remain behind the swimmers ear until the wall is touched, then it is legal.
Sorry but SW 6.2 is clear "The position of the head is not relevant" It is the position of the shoulders. At 6'40 the swimmers had is towards the bottom of the pool. The bicep may be behind the ear but the shoulders are clearly past the 90°
I am a judge, I've never been a swimmer. If I had been standing directly over the top of this swimmer I would have observed the shoulders move past the vertical then observed that the fingers had not touched the wall and disqualified the swimmer.
I do not know the swimmer or the training they recieved. I just know the rules.
I had this exact scenario this weekend and because of incorrect videos like this I got called out by issue swimmers and parents. I had my integrity and competence called into question.
I've been doing a flat back-touch, followed by a backflip.
Might be a bit odd but it works for me :d
Others also use the reverse flip...but you can end up with water up the nose (sinuses) if not careful. I don't like it because it is a blind turn.
This is the way to go frankee. Backflips are way faster
So, for a competition flip turn in back stroke, do you want your hand on the wall like you show in the last bit here? I know with freestyle or my side stroke, if I am coming into the wall with any speed, that hand/arm distance is too close for me...
In backstroke turn, you don't need to touch the wall. On the IM back/breast transition you do.
@@theraceclub Yes, about 10 minutes after I posted this, I found a clip by Raul at Swim Skills showing that same turn and he had a flash of the IM rules up and how each leg of the IM is like an individual race requiring the hand touch... Makes no sense to me though. I may start working on the back stroke.... There doesn't seem to be as much info on the back stroke arm pull as there is on the freestyle arm pull.... Working on it slowly, that is my rest between sets length of the pool in idle speed........
Your reasoning for choosing this turn over a modified bucket turn don't add up
by modified I mean reaching over with the arm like you would for a crossover but instead of crossing over flipping over.
1) "You get to see wall." Same initial movement
2) "Reach further". ""
3) "law of inertia" Using inertia would mean the movement of the head and arms up would result in the body also moving up and over. With the crossover you must turn you body to redirect some of the inertia
I firmly believe the bucket turn is the same speed if now faster and easier to master and less likely to DQ.
What do you think?
The bucket turn doesn't allow you to see the wall as easily and takes less advantage of the law of inertia whereas the crossover you follow the direction as you look and flip. There's a good reason nearly all the world's fastest swimmers all use the crossover!
Buen video... Where can i buy that microphone and those headphones?

So after touching the wall on the side it is okay to turn to the stomach and then flip? I thought you have to be on your side?
No, once you touch the wall you can rotate legally. The key is to touch the wall while on your side, not your stomach.
Nice clip coach. At what point you get disqualified? Turning more than 90 degrees before or during flip?
You have to touch the wall on your back.
How far you can roll over on your side and still be 'on your back' is up for debate ;)
The key seems to be to keep the arm (biceps) behind the ear. That is what the officials are looking for.
0:02 & 8:27 DQ
Really nice drills to set fast transition from back to the breast.
But there is at least a couple of tricky moments to watch out.
1. Backstroke finish according to FINA rules - 'Upon the finish of the race the swimmer must touch the wall while on the back..' (SW 9.4 & SW 6.5 ). Especially at the race at high speed, just take a bit early 'entry point' for transition and you are already on your breast while touching the wall ...
According to SW 6.3, 'Some part of the swimmer must break the surface of the water throughout the race'. That means that athletes must be very careful not to dive (completely submerged) during the transition (backstroke finish).
2. While pushing off from the wall to Breastroke, the athlete must be already on the breast ( SW 7.2 '... as long as the body is on the breast when leaving the wall. ').
No offense, this is just an ordinary workout.
As I said before, I really like these @theraceclub videos and use them to improve my own and athlete's skills, because the coach very well explains what, how and why to do one or another thing.
I just pointed out additional things that should be taken into account in the training process for this kind of turn. My approach is that during the training process things have to be done properly and there can be no disclaimer that it is just a workout. Just my experience, if an athlete at practice makes one arm breaststroke turns, weak push-offs, bad underwater dolphin kicks, then for 90% sure athlete will do the same in the race. Don’t want to see that someone misses finals as it was on World Juniors because of bad back-to-breast transition. I believe that world-class athletes make a decent turn at workout every time, even if it is just a kind of regular drill.
When leaving the wall after the turn the body is not completely on the breast. Will it be a disqualification.?
No. Although the rule states that, no swimmer coming off the wall is completely on his/her chest. Just can't push off the wall on the back, or will get DQ'd.
Beautiful, excellent.
Yes...makes the transition faster and easier.
@@theraceclub Well done
Is it illegal if you rotate the opposite way on to your stomach with your right hand? So your right hand is under your head not over it before the flip turn.
It's not illegal as long as you touch the wall before rotating past the shoulder.
So I swim for a ymca as well as for USAS. Am I allowed to use the crossover in my IM’s at a USA meet?
Absolutely! It's legal in both - just make sure to not cross over too far (onto your stomach) before touching the wall, good luck!
@@theraceclub thank you
Its sam!
Yes...Sam.
where is the girl ? she don't want to do ?
The girl in the video (age 12) is just learning the technique, so we couldn't use her much to show the correct ways. On Lane 3 in our subscription, you will find all five videos on this subject. www.theraceclub.com
@@theraceclub
Oh, yes !!! Thank you so much !
Seems a little risky, isn't it very easy to rotate past 90 degrees and get DQed? unless the rules have changed on that already. For example 6:39, when slowed down, it seems like he rotate past 90 degrees (judging mainly from his hips position)before his hands touch the wall which would be a DQ.
It is risky. That's why this turn needs to be perfected in practice before even considering using it in a meet. The turn happens very fast but if you practice it enough you can do it quickly and legally.
Where can i buy that microphone and those headphones?

정말 아름답게 잘하네~

Nice and nice
Thank you!
Great
Thanks!
Good
The only part of the body causing frontal drag is a part moving forward. In freestyle pull, during the lift phase and front quadrant propulsion phase, the upper arm is moving forward. Its position in the water profoundly affects the amount of drag.
Why must it right hand rotate left and not rotate right?
What do you mean by that?
@@theraceclub the head position is looking at left when right hand touches the wall. Normal touch and go is always head and hand the same side. Is it particularly important in crossover turns? Thanks.
USA Swimming Stroke & Turn Judge here. Every time this kid touches the wall on his back-to-breast turn, he's past the vertical toward the breast and that'll get him DQd.
You're right Jason and thanks for pointing that out!
@jayunker @theraceclub when leaving the wall after the turn the body is not on the breast.. Will it be a disqualification.?
What are those "swim talkers"?
We use bluetooth aucio connection to all of our swimmers, so we can correct their techniques in real time. Great coaching tool!
As a, lil one - I swallowes- much waterz. Sinusodales. Thaat banner - remindes(yes), of Swedish/ Wales.
Try wearing a nose clip when you practice this transition.
When I flip, I always slip sideways. Any tips
Before or after the feet landing on the wall?
@@theraceclub never mind, I figured out how! Thank you for the video though ❤️
@@Suiikwan 👍👍
Thanks....
You are welcome!
How can you improve breathing for this technique?
You need to be fit to be able to hold your breath for a full breast pullout. Practice!
Understood! Thank you
For me it helps, when I see I'm approaching the wall on the backstroke leg, to sort of hyperventilate, breathing once on every stroke (which is easy to do because I'm on my back). This enables me to maintain my streamline for a little longer after the turn.

That kid is a good swimmer
Yes, indeed.
This was helpful but why didn’t we see the girl?😂
classic :')
The girl in the video is younger (12) and just learning for the first time. The boy is a bit older and learns faster.
Hay que ver el final de los vídeos.
I might be doing this one wrong because it feels much more awkward and it hurts my shoulder.
It shouldn't really hurt your shoulder. One of the keys is to rotate toward your stomach after touching the wall.

6:39 , 8:00 One of the best turns when YOU ARE VERY GOOD SWIMMER ... But if you are not so good try something else. Very high chances to get DQ ed .
so long as the bicep remains behind the ear until the wall is touched, swimmer is legal.
06:39 that is past vertical sir!
As long as his upper arm is behind the ear, it is considered legal.
I didn't know it's okay not to touch the wall in a backstroke position while swimming a backstroke swim
this transition is for the individual medley when going from backstroke to breaststroke.
Thank you. So after knowing this, I would still not use this technique because I know lot of officials here doesn't know it actually works. Might get a DQ if I'll use it tho hahaha

Such a hard turn to not end up smacked against the wall.
That is why you need to reach!
i love how there is a girl and a boy and only the boy seemed to be swimming 🧐
Yes, the boy is more accomplished. His sister was just learning.
That is kind of an insult 😅😅😅
@@theraceclub thank u a lot for helping me❤❤❤
SO what happens when someone masters it on the 5th time, you just tell them no sorry you must do it another 95 times before you can try it at me meet!? come on.... that's not be an adaptable coach... Being able to to do it 100 times right in practice DOES NOT make it so at a meet. There is all the added pressures. Being able to try it at a swim meet early on is very beneficial. Old school rules are ment to be broken friends. This old gaffer seems stale.
Welcome to try it at a meet whenever they want they just need to be OK with DQing if they've only every attempted it 5 times 👍 Some people don't swim very many "throw-away" meets!
@@theraceclub throw-away meet? well thats a bad way to look. It is not a throw away. Its all about experience in the end of the day.
I'm sorry but this is not how you do it at all and it actually illegal
Not illegal. Just fast.
@@theraceclub it's not even fast lol. It's illegal because you're touching on your front, on backstroke. That is illegal sir i am a referee
I can only do it when I finish with my left arm
me too @billy bob
You can always adjust your strokes under the flags to use left arm only. That takes some practice.
@@theraceclub i did it!!! thank you so much for this video. simple steps and easy to remember. i was also able to manage to do the turn with (both) either the left or right hand.
