I have enormous respect for the care and attention to detail he's put into the Super Smash Bros games, but it's really Kirby's Dreamland that makes me a Sakurai fan. Just a perfect little Game Boy game. A collection of tasteful and amusing decisions. If I'm ever feeling listless by the direction the games industry seems to be going in, I can come back to it and remind myself how great games can be.

I loved that game back on my GameBoy, and would play it far more often than a quick platformer had any right to take up my time with vs. Pokemon etc. But it had a quality that just kept me replaying the hard mode, trying to play it hitless etc. Sakurai had me hooked before I even read gameplay credits.

      1. I think the fact that so many people still talk about Kid Icarus Uprising to this day shows that Sakurai deserves respect for it. And what are you trying to prove by adding the "more than 10 years ago" part? He still made an amazing game. The original Lion King is still heavily praised, despite being over 20 years old.
      2. For the final 2 points, could you please provide a source? Saying that he dramatizes his health issues is quite a claim, and I know at least that only he and Iwata worked on the first Smash in secret until they could show it to higher ups so that it got approved.

Such a good video, Jon. I thought of a ton I wanted to say during it but just... kudos. I laughed a bunch and learned as well. I knew most of this but man, when Sakurai directs a game, you can FEEL it. Adventure, Super Star, Uprising, Smash 64... all just landmark games that make you feel like you're playing something truly special. I love Smash and I am always going to want more but I really do hope he gets a chance to do something else as well. Hopefully with 4 and Ultimate's refinement of the series, it can get "Kirbyfied" and directed by someone else so he can go create some other masterpiece.
Also, minor nitpick but the Dreamland and Knightmare in Dreamland footage looked a bit weird, like it'd been stretched incorrectly. Not a huge deal but it was a little distracting.

Hopefully someone else takes up the torch, especially if Nintendo is going to keep Sakurai in the Smash mines for the foreseeable future.
It’s funny, because there’s a new control scheme called flick stick (which only works alongside gyro aiming) that came about a few years ago that would be perfect for Kid Icarus. It’s starting to pick up mainstream adoption thanks to games like Fortnite, CS:GO, & Boomerang X. And I hope Nintendo uses it for some of their games, at least for Splatoon 3.

"in most other games you ignore what's around you and slash everything. But here every obstacle is the answer to overcoming it."
I had to keep rewinding the video with the J key because this sounded more brilliant every time I heard it. That's really what sets Kirby apart from 2D platformers or 2D beat em up games - the two closest genres to Kirby. Every obstacle is a new opportunity rather than a video game-y enemy that's just there to drain your health and resources. Furthermore, people STILL play modern kirby games with no copy abilities, partly because it makes for a unique challenge, and partly because the game designers effortlessly allow for that option by keeping the basic suck and blow moves. The only thing they need to add are stars popping out of boss attacks for you to use as ammunition.

Love the "Save Point" song from Kirby Superstar [edit: corrected from "cover of 'All Star Rest Area'"] playing in the background at the beginning!

Fun fact, All Star Rest Area is ITSELF a cover from Kirby Superstar's ost.

Well since you like meteos so much, I should mention the fact there's a really great fangame for it on Android and PC called meteoro striker, it's pretty much just meteos but with a bunch of new fan made species and planets, which also fan planets in/outside the fangame just so happen to have a wiki, it's really fun you should check it out

And I thought the Battle Beauties: MesuKing minigame in Yakuza Kiwami was an entirely original idea, and was merely a differently themed Cat Fight minigame from Yakuza 0 , turns out, RGG Studio was referencing another Sega IP, lol.

I played kid icarus uprising at the perfect time in my life (at like 12 back when it first came out) because I'm real nostalgic for it now. That's when I learned who sakurai is, and that he made kirby and smash. Blew my mind as a kid, especially the fact that he made kirby before he was 20

I love how much of a distinct style Sakurai has with his games... Smash, Air Ride and Uprising all have similar elements to each other that let you know it's a Sakurai game. Really looking forward to Sakurai's new project

Sakurai is my favorite game developer. He puts so much love and attention in his games and somehow always makes 'easy to learn, hard to master' work for every style of game he touches

Seeing Mushiking has unlocked a portion of my brain that I forgot existed. I love that game and knowing Sakurai was “sorta” involved is so cool. And happy 10 years Kid Icarus, can’t wait for more (hopefully)

Great video! I didn’t know Sakurai worked on some of these games. The hentai line was a weird/off-putting way to end the video but I really liked the vid overall! Great work as usual Jon 😁

Fantastic video Jon but now with your end statement I'm just thinking of the classic Miyamoto "quote" on Clickhole. It'd be an ideological war between Sakurai and Miyamoto on that game design.

Not sure if you know, but you can switch back to the Viridi menus after you beat the game, iirc. It allows you to max out your offerings to Viridi as well as Palutena.

I loved playing Kirbos Dreamland on game boy aswell as the Kirbo pinball one when i was much younger, Sakurai really had a good feel of game development at the start and Smash really gave so much to the industry as a whole
