For the last 12 years, Carter Emmart has been coordinating the efforts of scientists, artists and programmers to build a complete 3D visualization of our known universe. He demos this stunning tour and explains how it's being shared with facilities around the world.

I hope projects like these will help new generations understand we need to take care of Earth, and that we're *very far away* from the possibility of any other planet like it.
The empty space that hasn't been mapped could give false picture to people who don't or can't read English, so I find this video as a bit misleading.

@@-.-.-.-.-.---.----....-_- That is funny lol from an old guys perspective, TIME.....The time it takes to re-educate the elderly will be too late to make any difference, you need to re-educate the young so they can look further because this video is wrong. Well some of the statements are anyway. I shouldn't say wrong either; but debateable. The map is likely correct but the idea of time as a perspective will soon to be dismantled I believe. Current theories suggest we have been biased in our observations, that the universe may likely be infinite and what we observe and derive theories from is all biased because it is simply as far as we can see. So we decide that that must be the beginning, when it is simply as far as we can see. The Idea that gravity is not a force but a time thing is difficult to comprehend let alone explain. Simply because of the sheer number sizes involved and our ability to conceive or make sense of them. One thing is true, some historians claim if there is one thing we know for sure is that history has taught us nothing. That we as a species are doomed to repeat the same mistakes. I disagree because what we have learned from science is that at some point because of maths or simply other ideas that science as we know it or I should say our combined knowledge of everything as we know it is always changing. As too or also the theories and ideas. Things really began to change at one point when we first observed the earth from the moon and came to realise as a species that "This is it. This is us!!! If we cannot get along we are fu*&#^ !!! It is kind of like the theory of intelligent design and or why are we all alone. Why have we not already observed other life on other exo planets. It is supported by maths that the sheer size of the numbers we have to comprehend and deal with that top physicist's mistakenly and erroneously say well "just look at it. There has to someone else out there?" Even when the maths tell them they are likely wrong. They have stepped into the realm of religion with statements like that. It is most likely we ARE alone at this TIME; but not necessarily ever. How is it physics can tell us so much about our history as a part of the Universe yet we know nothing of our relationship with ancient civilizations only 20,000 to 30,000 years ago. That is where the research needs to be put so that maybe we can better understand ourselves and why everyone before us seems to have failed. If we cannot "just get along" well That is it. That was us. No I am not an historian or an anthropologist. lolol

@@lilyjeanb5218 my point was to emphasise the respect for the people and region of Tibet; keeping in mind that they have been persecuted for the last 60 years under an authoritarian communist regime. Remember that the Tibetan people were eradicated, tortured, and killed during the Chinese seizure of Tibet at the time. Tibet was/is a peaceful identity that mostly concerned themselves with the study, practise, and implementation of Buddhism... Of treating others with kindness and respect for life. It was the seat where the reincarnation of Siddartha Guatama, the Guatama Buddha of compassion guided his people from, and the Moaist regime basically swept in and just demolished it with no respect or value for life. If you research the crimes committed against these peaceful people, you would be horrified.
And so with this in mind, out of respect, I think it is a beautiful gesture that we continue calling Tibet, exactly that, Tibet. Because that is it's name as spiritual center and identity to many Buddhists that practise a life of peace, compassion and personal discipline.
Having said all of that, we as communities and individuals would lessen some of the ongoing political and racial turmoil in this world if we began considering each other Global citizens, to remove the barriers and boundarieswe build in our minds and ideologies, whilst being mindful of our histories and origins. Ultimately, it doesnt matter so much where we come from... it matters more how we treat one another and how much we respect and value each others lives and core values. Namaste 🙏
Isn't it funny. American· has virtually only in the last 50 years started to act in war for greed such as the afore mentioned Countries. They've built up as a super power in the last 200 years, world's richest country & yet this last half century they've dwindled down to nothing, oh hang on Ive forgotten about their atrocities when the Welsh Scottish and Irish left the UK Becoz of the English greed(I'm English,Welsh , Scottish and Irish myself so I have no predujuce either way. Really Excellent Video of Universe...
I used to do a "Space show" at Navet Science-center in Borås, Sweden when I worked there some years ago and I did so using an earlier, slightly (only slightly though) less developed version of UniView. I was told to only pan out as far as the milky way just so it wouldn't be too confusing for the younger ones in the audience... I could never help myself and pretty much always zoomed out to show all the mapped galaxies and talk a bit about them and the CMB and such... It would always blow quite a few peoples minds, mine included. Never got tired of it! So amazing!
What is important to take away is how far we are from any possible similar world and how unique and special Earth is. We should understand how immense our responsibility is to take care of our homeworld rather than see it in anyway as disposable. Conservation is far less expensive than colonization and much, much more rewarding.

@@StarNumbers A radiography doesn't "pretend" to be a real picture of your bones, it just is, even if it's made with X Rays printed on a film. A mathematical model of the universe based on careful, prolonged, international observation isn't a videogame, even if it uses computer imaging. It doesn't "pretend," it's as real as a printed map is the real representation of a continent, country, city. Unless you think that maps aren't real either.

Our solar system is so inconceivably small compared to the vastness of space, and the length of time humanity has been on this earth is such a vanishingly short eyeblink in the eons of time since the big bang that it's an almost statistical certainty that we will wipe ourselves out before anyone notices.

You are confusing small with insignificance, would you consider quantum mechanics insignificant just because its the study of nature at its smallest size? Have you any idea on how much of a complex system a single cell let alone a human being is compared to anything else in the known universe? Do you even consider any of this in your conclusion that we are so insignificant? I'm all for science and people thinking for themselves but please make sure you take everything into account when you draw conclusions like this. Don't just take the size of something and determine its significance.

I agree with you and Sam both. We are, as far as we know the only self-aware/conscious beings in the Universe (despite the statistical unlikelihood of that fact), so as far as we know, we are the 'eyes of the Universe' looking back on itself. It seems to me that if we were in fact the only planet with life in the entire universe, I'd almost take that as a sign for the existence of a creator. I suspect rather that the Universe is teeming with life, but we simply don't have the ability yet to detect it. Astronomers are already attempting to look for atmospheric signs of biologic life on exoplanets. The fact that we have been witness to the discovery of the first exoplanet to the now thousands that have been identified is an amazing thing indeed.
If we are the only intelligent life in the Universe, there would be something deeply tragic and beautiful about that at the same time. We are hopelessly short-sighted as individuals, but as a civilization, we are slowly starting to get a fix on the problems that threaten us existentially. The imminent problems of environmental collapse are real, global warming is real, but we also have made tremendous strides in science and computing that may eventually offer us ways to save ourselves. Life does tend to persevere, at least in the short-run. Your points about the billions of life forms that have already passed into extinction is a sobering thought though. Something like 99% of all species are already extinct, and we are poised on the brink of another mass-extinction event that may include our own species unless we are very ingenious indeed.
Thinking about species and evolution, if we can survive long enough, artificial general intelligence also seems inevitable, and it is very likely that our descendents will be conscious machines that have abilities far beyond anything we can currently conceive. One way or another, it will be our intelligence that either saves us or destroys us...
It comes down to a question that many are too afraid to contemplate: *"Is the human condition fundamentally tragic?"*
As you so astutely point out, this is why so many find solace in religion. The facts on the table don't look too good. We live relatively short lives, and the wisdom we garner during that short time is usually realized too late to be of any material use for us, or for our children. For some reason, humans seem to be good at passing down technological knowledge from one generation to the next, but not wisdom.
We seem destined to make all the same mistakes of pride and ego, and all the attendant mistakes caused by the 'seven deadly sins'. There is some validity to the insights of religion that peg us as deeply flawed creatures; and
it could simply be that the answer lies somewhere beyond our ken.

The little fish
Once upon a time in a distant part of a very vast and dark ocean there was a little fish. This fish was born 3 days ago. 3 days was a lot for a little fish, almost half of his life. From his eyes he was eating everything he desired, no one was against him and he was felling very confident. When time came he needed to express his feelings about being so cool so he flashed with his tail, a little dot at the end of the tail flashing with light.
One day he was traveling freely through the ocean and he was so happy. Suddenly a very big and powerful fish came from the darkness and ate the little fish. He didn't even cared to look where he goes or to talk with him. He ate it in a fraction of a second and continued his way through the big dark ocean.
And this was the end of the little fish.

The funny thing is that we don't know the actual real-time map of the universe.
Right, light has a speed limit. But we can see the direction galaxies are moving and calculate where they're going like Andromeda is heading towards our galaxy and it's probably already eaten a galaxy before judging by its size.
I agree and am convinced we don't know the true age of the universe due to VLS variable light speed that was magnitudes faster than the current constant just after the big bang and before the 4 major forces came into being some unknown time later.

This is a nice addition to the message behind Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot. It's amazing what we have discovered in such a short period of time since Sagan penned that captivating quote 28 years ago. Imagine the wonders we might discover in the three upcoming decades!

None of any of this is real without the human miracle of perception. None of it adds up to any other form of perception the way it does for us. We are the true center of the universe because it is our perception and our idea. Marvel in your tools, human beings. Marvel in your way of casting your soul out into what you call reality. it is yours, to own, frame, and soon to co-create once you know what this whole thing is about. YOU are the miracle. All of this ability to look and hear and see and smell and structure science is but one part of the "tissue" of your spiritual perception. It is all yours.
But then we've only existed for a mere fraction of a mili second of the universe's existence. Our planet is halfway through it's life time and our star will die within another 5 billion years, in comparison we humans have been in existence for over 12 000+ years. The dinosaurs have been around for 65+ million years on this Earth before we even came to exist. And if nature is the hearth that births the fires of life, then Dinosaurs would have had a soul too and they were also a miracle. But the thing is, we still have unanswered questions and putting it simply like how you did although born of a positive perception only inspires chaos and confusion in others. You therefore have nulled your own statement, because if we who have this perception and ability to live our reality and control what we do, then every creature who can do just the same even at a lesser point of intelligence is still aware of their miraculous existence and capabilities. We may know the stars, and the universe, but who's to say the dinosaurs didn't have any sense that told them when to migrate and when to breed. So see, you try to inspire, but in the process you produced an even more volatile force that distraughts the balance. So my only question is, can you really say we are the true center of the universe, or is it the hidden force that gives us all these gifts and life?

The Human brain is set up to find knowledge at these sort of lengths the most efficient for memorising and learning. Much longer and most younger minds can start to drift.
