started collecting in December 2023 (mainly on Amazon, Vinegar Syndrome, 88Films and Arrow) My collection is growing every day. The 480 films in my collection are quite expensive, but having them all on the shelves fills my heart.
2nd & Charles is similar to Half Price Books where you can find a large selection of second-hand media, mostly DVDs and blu-rays. They also have books, toys and pop culture-related gear. However, you can only purchase physical movies in-store.
My local thrift stores have Blu rays, even some Barnes and Noble stores still have special edition blu rays after Target and Best Buy stores stopped selling movies! There’s still a demand for blu rays in specialty stores, because they’re popular like vinyl records in physical media stores.
The problem with places like Vinegar, Criterion, Shout, ect., is that they are expensive. I just am not onboard with 4K's new norm price being $30-$45 each. Even $25 is pushing it IMO. I will spend up to $18-$20 on new releases and movies I really want. But that is really my limit honestly. I have been collecting for far too long to adjust to these new high prices. I have about 20K discs. And my buying has definitely slowed down the last couple years. I used to use Black Friday as my way to get most of my new titles for the year. Now that is not great anymore. I don't find the collecting part of movies to be that fun anymore. Because the deals just aren't there anymore...
Half-Price books is great if you're out west. They also sell on Amazon, so when I'm buying used I look for them because I trust them a bit more than some of the random sellers on the site. Goodwill is also a good place to check out frequently.
Diabolik take great care to package their orders well. That's why I mostly use them, because a lot of bigger stores use cheap packaging and discs arrive with damage.
From what I understood from a sales clerk at Barnes & Noble, certain stores are being tested with more dvd/blu-ray/4k in stock. One is in San Antonio and seen different in store sales only promotions in 2024. One month there was a 50% off all Paramount movies as an example. They also have a reward program that was free to join. Again, you placed a very helpful video, thanks! ☺️
Zia has the best trade in system. They actually give you a fair amount of in store credit that you can use towards whatever else you want to purchase through them. Love them so much!
Sadly, they have almost nothing on their shelves and there is only 1 store nearby. Their site is also completely useless and when I call them to ask some titles I like to buy, they don't have them in stock and of course, don't take order.
Pawn shops for used movies! I never pay more than $3 per Blu-ray and often only $2 per. I have also started seeing 4K titles pop up; I pay about $4-5 per for those.
Thanks for the suggestions, Jeff. I am basically an Amazon guy and look for OOP titles on eBay but these are interesting options that I will check out. Great video!
2nd & Charles is a great source, mostly for used media. My local store (Parkdale Mall, Beaumont TX) is literally right across the hall from one of the last 2 Suncoast stores in the country.
This is great! Thanks so much Jeff. Now I gotta find that Strange Darling 4K UHD. Such a great movie. Just about sold out everywhere I’ve looked tho…😢 Update! Thanks for the reminder about Barnes & Noble. Jeff, I would’ve never thought to look it up on their website, but it was the only one that still had the 4K available.
I have about 5 or 7 thrift stores, a record store, and multiple libraries that i live nearby, and of course 2 Walmarts and barnes and noble, and 2 Gamestops, and 2 goodwills. Various places to get physical media
Scarecrow also has a great disc rental mailer operation, it’s a little more per disc (than Choovie) but they have literally everything, rent some great rarities that you can’t find anywhere 📀
Great resources for buying physical media, thank you Jeff. For more physical media theres also... 88 Films (UK), Imprint (Australian), Eureka (UK) and Synapse (US)
Thanks Jeff. GRUV is my go to for Blu-ray and 4K for universal and Warner’s films. Like you said great sales. I think a must site for new collectors and those of us who are upgrading.
Happy to see the love for Scarecrow Video on the channel. Please anyone in Seattle check them out. They’re an absolute goldmine, essentially a museum at this point too and struggling desperately to keep the lights on.
NC and TN area try McKays. They are a reseller, so nothing new unless someone brings them in. Books, music, video games, toys... they have everything. Great stores.❤
In Foley, AL, there is a store called Action Game and Movie that has a lot of pre owned blu rays and they usually have pretty good deals. Also Game X Change usually has a good selection too, they are in D’Iberville, MS, Gulfport, MS, and Mobile, AL
There's a local used games and media store with a huge selection of DVDs, Blu-rays, and even UHDs. I've found a lot of obscure TV series sets there, mostly for dirt cheap, but some of them are definitely "We saw what this is going for on eBay" prices.
For the past two years, every instance I've ordered from Amazon, I get a repack. A return they've repurposed for sale, sealed in what appears to be cellophane. And as expected, the 4K disc has a scratch on it, every. single. time. So, I've been ordering mostly elsewhere.
I go to my local Half Price multiple times a week. I get everything from 4K to Laserdiscs there. Usually for insanely cheap prices and fantastic conditions.
Thanks for this helpful overview of where to shop for our movies. I'm out West and used to give Bullmoose a lot of my money until they upped their price for free shipping to kick in from $45 to $75. Unfortunately, now I no longer shop with them.
If you truly care about physical media, you best start going to stores that sell them and purchase them IN STORES. Buying online is convenient, but it is also what is ending the hobby. There is old saying out of sight out of mind. If people aren’t seeing these in stores then it’s not gonna bring in new people and ultimately it will cease to exist even online.
For sure. It sucks to not see them anymore. It does however seem like they have enough steady sales to increase production like most studios have in the last year. All the catalog releases are getting bought up. It's a smaller market than it used to be, but it is very steady, and growing more so. Let's hope that holds, because there is nothing better than a good movie on disc. If they would make the players more affordable I think it would be better, but I don't know if they want it to be affordable.
@@donnellcoleman7784 changes is a beautiful part of life, but unless you want it to change that physical media doesn’t exist, you should start buying your movies in store when possible.
@@sweezlesquee that is true I would like to see players get cheaper in general, but the Sony UBP 700 M is $159 and it’s a great player. I don’t think that’s true in the slightest, many many people including me will have discovered blu rays and (rediscovered physical media) from online browsing which then leads to (online) buying, which contributes to keeping the hobby alive just as much as a physical purchase. It was the case for me, don’t shop in person (for anything) and yeah by extension no I hadn’t seen (or at least taken any notice of if I did see) a blu ray in a shop for sale for the past 10-15 years, and yet here I am having started buying them in 2022 with a shelf of 200+ releases, all bought online. I personally buy Criterions off of amazon whenever B&N dont have the 50% off sale because usually they are around 50% off year round on amazon. I will say tho, many films I would like to buy (most recent example would be The Squid And The Whale) can sometimes be out of stock. In that department, I would 100% recommend the Criterion collection, but I've never actually bought from them directly just because of the price.
Thanks for the advice and great video, too. It's gonna be helpful for me to add more physical media to my collection and help local shops and websites for boutique labels. I know I buy plenty of movies from Kino sales. I'll give the other site like the Criterion site a try, too, when the sales are up.
The biggest problem for collecting is living in Canada. The exchange rate is insane and the shipping is even worse. Shipping is usually more than the price of the Blu ray.
I buy from Amazon if im grabbing hust one title or a couple cheap ones. But usually ill buy straight from the distributor (Arrow, Screem Factory, ect.) or Diabolik if im buying a few random titles.
Would love to get a video talking about how these studios pack their products for shipping. Do they pack their products really well? Really curious about 'Imprint' especially since I live in the U.S., and they ship from Australia. We need some really good unboxing videos.
Thanks for posting this! Whatever happened to that plan for Walmart to become the premiere place to purchase blurays at an actual store? The store product hs been incredibly anemic and often behind lock and key. Its really sad that Best Buy has gotten out of the bluray business. I used to go there every week. But have only been in a store once since. It really has affected the way I purchase things. After Best Buy stopped it’s been truly dire imo Amazon ships everything very poorly I’ve had to send so many movies back because the disc becomes loose and scratched during delivery
As a member at Barnes & Noble we get a 10% discount on everything and 5 bucks back for every $100, so it’s an even better deal than what Jeff mentioned.

I would add go to your local library. I don't think it was mentioned. I got a few movies for like 2 dollars. Need to go back soon to look around.
Twice a year a library sale occurs at our county fair. $1 Blu-rays! I just made a killing last month. Found 20 titles I wanted.
