It makes me so sad that we should have had another 20 years listening to beloved Jussi at his best. God rest his dear soul.
Jussi Bjorling is the best here by a country mile. The right balance of sweetness and power.
Oh, I do so agree.
Me encanta la voz de Jussi.❤
Yess!
Who can resist that magnificent sound of Corelli?
The best ❤️
I can resist, because his bad handling of the italian language
@@michaelfuting2403Even though he was Italian?
@@PippaAT Compare his "speeking" for example with Guiseppe di Stefano! The problem is: if a voice is great and wide or broad, the voice is not good to understand.
O.k. the sound can be amazing...
Oh, Jussi, Jussi, Jussi. That pure, beautiful voice, unforced artistry. Sublime.
Jussi Bjorling, no one came even close!
None other can compare!
So, so beautiful.
@@ramonavandermerwe1159I agree
It is fitting that Donald Smith be listed among these great tenors!
Indeed, what a voice! But more than that - he's much better than Domingo, Carreras, Villazon, Kaufmann and Pavarotti.
Each tenor adds a unique stroke to this masterpiece of an aria. There is something about Domingos musicality that just does it for me. Jussi however just effortlessly glides in this aria.
What a world we live in where there is this much beauty ❤
Björling is outstanding as always.
Jussi is undoubtedly the best!
Many tenors can scream through NESSUN DORMA, but one has to have the voice to sing this magnificent aria!!!
Jussi is the best tenor in a gallery of kings
Corelli is so great, hard to compare to anyone else.
ruclips.net/video/wl9hdC-Z2Yo/видео.html 😊
Gigli is the most completed his bel canto technic singer here.Big and round sound.
Gigli the great! So unforced and sweet…
Absolutely!!
GIGLI......the king of tenors.
gigli and bjorling
Jussi was exclusive. What beautifully voice.,but all were or are Magnifica.Pipo de Texas
All great Tenors. Jussi, Beniamino. Luciano, Franco, are my top Tenors.
Donald Smith blowed me away! I need to hear more! That was brillant.
Yes Grate voice. Can also recommend Vladimir Atlantov?
Amazing!!!! Never heard him before!!!!
Bellissime voci e interpretazioni tutti. Grande. ❤❤❤
Jussi Bjorling N. 1!
They are all great singers but Jussi has that little something extra that makes you believe he is singing just for you
My favourite aria....it really proves what a tenor can be.. I think Corelli's pathos and incredible breathing wins my ears and my heart.
Grazie. signore. Dio. Di. Averci. Dato. Queste. Voci. ,. Un. Grazie. Ai. Social. Che. Danno. Questa. Opportunità. Di. Ascoltarli,,,
I'd never heard of Donald Smith... but what a magnificent voice and interpretation! One of the best in this great line-up. Thank you for sharing this...
Absolutely. He's much better than Domingo, Carreras, Villazon, Kaufmann and Pavarotti.
@@xxsaruman82xx87
I presume you are no Teacher..Pavarotti had the perfect Bel Canto voice..
Smith is very fine but not in the same class as an Artist...
@@rationalsceptic7634 I’m not talking about technique, but fach. Pavarotti was never suited for heavy verismo roles
Smith is truly a revelation!
Jussi Bjöerling the best...
Jussi - the one and only!!!!
Donald Smith was terrific. My favourite is Mario del Monaco.
Beautifully done...And, Smith, someone I never heard of. What a glorious voice!!
My thought exactly!
Totally surprised by this voice. Beautiful.
All these great men were blessed with a God given talent to use their voices as an inspiration to us all.
Corelli makes me cry every time as if I'm hearing him for the first time
Jussi died too young... what a remarkable voice....
Probably the greatest tenor ever the model tenor he had everything tone effortless power beautiful sounds he was fantastic him and Gigli for me
Probably the best ever! Such beauty and clarity!
Tutti grandi. Molto diversi. Svettano Del Monaco, Corelli, Gigli
Bruno Prevedi ruclips.net/video/BlTZy751Xqo/видео.html
Gigli, Corelli, Jussi, Del Monaco
Please add more! Taglivini, Gedda, Kraus, di Stefano, Aragall. I know I'm forgetting some. Bergonzi? Yes, even Lanza. What a treat this was! I have never heard Smith before. He was wonderful.
Lauri-Volpi!!!
I've never heard Smith before. Magnificent.
@@xxsaruman82xx87 Yes! I knew I was forgetting someone.
Gigli. I like Angelo Loforese version.
Thank you for introducing me to Donald Smith !
As a boy soprano in the Australian Opera for several years, I had the privilege of being on stage with Donald Smith. Hearing him sing was a glorious and utterly unforgettable experience. He was a phenomenal Calaf, Cavaradossi, Manrico and Duke - among numerous other roles. He had the best top voice of any tenor I have ever heard - it opened up and up to produce the most enormous, lyrical tone. (Peter Wyllie Johnston)
Yeah, Donald Smith was one of the greats. I had the wonderful experience of being a rehearsal pianist for Don for four years during my time as a piano student at the Queensland Conservatorium.
@@johnely5050 u nice to hear your reply I remember you also had a glorious voice maybe you hopefully still have it how are you
What a wonderful tribute to Donald Smith. I can hear in his clarion voice everything that you reveal.
Thank you for this video, and for introducing me to Donald Smith who I hadn't heard. All have positives and shouldn't be compared, one can only make very subjective judgements. This aria is very beautiful and I would be happy listening to any of these great tenors. My favorite is Corelli.
Jussi Bjorling in a league of his own.
Well said!
Jussi!!!!!!!!!!!! Poi Luciano - bravissimo anche Donald Smith.
Corelli, Pavarotti, Boerling, en fin todos.
Desde Cartago Costa Rica

My favorite, Gigli. What a treat to hear him. We're so lucky to have these recordings....
Beniamino Gigli best
Franco Corelli...the best.
The best Beniamino Gigli
What a magnificent compilation, they all add something to this song. A bellcanto voice like Beniamino Gili is perfect for this.
The beauty of bel canto best expressed by Gigli and Bjoerling!!
If you chose one of them, which one you will pick up?
@@davidglzhangzhang1049
Björling og course.
Je ne saurais lequel choisir
O K. Entièrement d'accord avec vous.
Fedora is a verismo opera not bel canto, while all singers here are great,I’d prefer likes of del monaco,Corelli true verismo singers, after that gigli who could cross bel Canto to verismo with ease
Jussy is the best with corelli and gigli
Jussi I absolutely agree, also Gigli, but Corelli's I cannot like, and normally I am a huge fan, but here he sounds to be chewing it!
I was very impressed w Donald Smith; however, I thought the Tenor who shined the most was Mario Del Monaco. Great collection. And of course, many other great Tenors were not there, as there are so many.
Del Monaco is the best!
He blows everybody out of the water and yet, he sings still controlled. Yes, quite a rare calibre.
Donald Smith was a revelation, the first five are the gold standard, it doesn't get any better, Corelli, Gigli, Bjorling, MDM, they can't even top each other. Though the Pavarotti version was nothing to sneeze at either.
Thanks for the very complimentary comment on this video. There are of course many other great tenors on the wold stage that one could choose from; These are just a few of my favourites, especially Donald Smith.
This great Australian tenor (Dr Donald Sydney Smith OBE), had a wonderful career spanning over 50 years as a professional opera singer. Although having suffered a stroke in his late 60's, he recovered sufficiently to still be singing and performing, well into his 70's, before is death at age 78. On one such occasion Donald performed outdoors at the Piazza Venue at World Expo 88. Incredibly, although still unable to walk unassisted, or speak clearly, (he sounded like he had been drinking), he was nevertheless still able to produce his magnificent sound with much of his former power, clarity and emotion.
Jussi Bjorling feels/loves the music more than the others who seem to use this aria mainly as a showpiece for their lovely tones.
Gigli e Bjorling. Mi spiace dirlo ma no Carreras.
I get that impression also.
Of course his voice was the most beautiful of all.
I meant Bjoerling.
@@rafaelplazapagan9725 Of course you did!!
Thanks for introducing Donald Smith.
He has such a beautiful voice. He was less known in Europe. What a pitty!
Absolutely. But more than that - he's much better than Domingo, Carreras, Villazon, Kaufmann and Pavarotti.
GIGLI e BIORLING .....Angeli del canto
I have-to agree - even though this Compilation is not a Competition.
Domingo & Smith are "right-up-there" too, here.
These magnificent singers may be forgiven errors in their own life. Gigli recorded nationalistic & militaristic songs in support-of the Mussolini Era invasion of Ethiopia. Domingo disgraced himself with Women. But, put all that aside & just listen: This Aria urges Love, to forgive. And Bjoerling is the Only Tenor who makes me Cry.
It is - simply - Bjorling and the rest.
All of them are fantastic - what a century!
What a haunting melody -gets into every fibre of your being!
Agree. I cannot get this Melody out my mind, either. The word-play in the 《paroles》
certainly helps. These are all such brave men. Isn't that a knock-out photo of Kaufmann? What a beautiful man. Think of all the proud moms & dads of these amazing men who discovered the realization of their Power in the Arts.
.
GIGLI the Best! 🙏
I heard Donald Smith sing in Trovatore in the Melbourne Palais! Loris Elms was in the same production. He was truly great. The best ever Australian tenor by far! What a singer!
I wonder if Smith would have been more famous if he went by Donaldo Smitherini?
All great tenor voices, mix of Dramatic, Spinto and Lyric for me Bjorling, Gigli, Corelli, but if pushed to select one Bjorling, effortless singing, great technique, honey toned voice, emotional performance, combines best of lyric and spinto tenors in a unique voice.
Great all of them! A pity Carreras' voice is not young enaugh in this recording. IMO: Corelli, Gigli, Pavarotti, Bjorling. And I miss specially Aragall and Tagliavini. :-)
I love these compilations! A chance to hear singers I don't know. It's just fun to hear the differences. I understand why people love Jussi, his warmth. Surely this is not Corelli's best performance? although I liked the variety of his dynamics (too many tenors sing heroic arias heroically from beginning to end). Donald Smith -- what a great ringing sound! thanks for including him. It's also interesting to hear so clearly how one vowel sound can radically color the voice - and not always successfully.
I agree. Corelli was not my favourite here, or even near. Jussi forever.
Beautiful singing. Jussi, Gigli and Corelli and Placido special to my ears and heart.
I don't know why I haven't heard of Donald Smith who was from Australia. He is just fabulous in every way
Thanks for your comment. Donald Smith was arguably one of the greatest Australian operatic tenor voices of the 20th Century. He had an operatic career that spanned over forty years, during which time he amassed a repertoire of 50 major operatic tenor roles. He also sung and recorded hundreds of ballads and sacred songs, many of which are now featured on RUclips, Vimeo, Reverbnation and other sites.
He commenced his operatic career in Australia in the 1950's with the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust Opera Company. In the early 1960's he travelled to England and joined the Sadler's Wells Opera Company, where he remained their major principal tenor for over 10 years. He sung his first 'Calaf' in "Turandot" with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and performed for Queen Elizabeth II during this time at Royal Command performances. He returned to Australia in the 1970's, and was the first voice to sing in the opening of the Sydney Opera House.
Although he occasionally thereafter sung outside Australia in Canada, Mexico and New Zealand, he remained the Australian Opera Company's principal tenor until his retirement in the late 1980's. Fortunately he has left behind a huge legacy of hundreds of recordings of his glorious voice. He passed away in Brisbane at the age of 78.
No question about Smith’s standing as an Australian tenor. Our best by some way. Albert Lance was also very good but just didn’t have the oomph Smith had.
Ohne Zweifel, Beniamino Gigli!
What a great group of tenors. Not a missfire in the bunch. Although I would have licked to have had Lanza represented.
Lanza for sure a great tenor.
Bjorling is my pick. Such a beautiful tone..so natural. Never strained or forced
He was simply amazing! What a shame that he died so young!
Bjorling for ever!!! The Best!!

Corelli is the best ever..
Wonderful to hear all the tenors from the past - a real keepsake. The world of today is still producing good tenors and I hope many more to come. Everyone has their own choice of voice and that is the real beauty in this world. Like a painting that an artist paints some people think it great and others not. Peoples Choice but still grand.
Well said Robin
The best is Jussi Bjorling then Beniamino Gigli. Thank you for posting it.
oh yes bjorling. i am no expert so pleased that others ssidcit first. sad he died young.
What a voice Donald Smith has first I've heard of him...
Most of these recordings are fabulous. The one by del Monaco has such a beautifully nostalgic quality,.
It’s not easy to decide, but my vote in yhis case goes to Jussi and - what a surprise - Donald Smith.
Jussi Bjorling best of the best! cold voice and a warm heart!
Corelli all the way.
Donald Smith - WOW, He was the first live operatic tenor I saw in Sydney as a young man and thought then that he had a wonderful voice. Many many thanks for this memory. I wonder if the great McCormack ever recorded this?
la voz mas bella jussi sin duda
It's a breathtaking aria.
Interesting picks here.
The star of this compilation is for me DONALD SMITH - beautiful and luminous voice!
I love Jussi! He always went just a hair sharp. It gave his voice an unique urgency and forward thrust
Incredible how Jussy is the only one able to make this modest piece sound like genuine music
IMHO disagree. Gigli understands each phrase more deeply , including the colors of the words, true stresses, and little decrescendi and portamenti that give polish and elegance. As astonishing as Björling always is, here his vocal production is not his usual glorious consistency: sometimes cover is not anticipated, some parts a bit too open , including looser breath; but nice phrasing and sense of melody. Forget all the rest.
Franco Corelli 🔝
Gigli by a nose, vocally! Although I like Bjoerling's innocent, boyish tone, straightforward approach, and ringing climax.
Franco Corelli rules!!!
Really enjoyed this, Donald who? Well now I know, really liked hearing him. Will have to say I enjoyed Franco Corelli the most.
It's a tough choice but Corelli moved me the most emotionally.
It's strange since for many years Jussi Bjorling was my favorite, I still think he was wonderful.
I would say any of those Tenors, at least in these recordings is wonderful, except Carreras, he didn't sound good at all.
Cheers,
Rik Spector
All great but my fav are Lanza di stefano , and kraus
Bjorling!!!!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great tenors.Bravo .Encourage.
The best three are Bjorling, Pavarotti, and Gigli
This 10 interpretations of x piece should be more common in cds if not in concerts (cachet...), beautiful piece to hear and rehear
Franco CORRELLI DE BESTE
Jussi (although a bit light) and Plácido of course!
