    Okay, the Lich King you guys saw here was the second to wield the now-broken helmet. It's not the same guy that killed Sylvanas and turned her into a banshee. At the "Wrath of the Lich King" expansion, there is a statement saying "There must always be a Lich King", so one of the soldiers - Bolvar Fordragon - put on the helmet when we the players raided the Icecrown Citadel and killed the Lich King you've known before, Arthas.

    Yessss, Shadowlands! I've had such high hopes for this expansion, as for my friends not so much. A lot of people are disappointed that he is so easily beaten, but it kinda makes sense to me. Not that I'm jumping on the Sylvanas simping bandwagon :P
    But hey, lore-wise, Sylvanas has a lotta new power that she acquired from the Shadowlands and that's why she's so powerful. That's also why she just smites Saurfang so easily too. I'm not really gonna say anything else 'cause it may or may not be spoilers and I want you guys to enjoy the expansion whenever you play it :D
    Edit: Also, in case you guys don't know, Shadowlands has been delayed so it no longer comes out tomorrow lol. But the prepatch is available (level squish) and I think the prepatch event is coming soon -- maybe tomorrow! Or next Tuesday.

      Bolvar did not had Frostmourne, which has been fed with thousands of souls... Also the previous LK was 2 beings merged (the minds of Ner'zul and Arthas) which meant he had a lot of knowledge, Ner'zul being a powerful shaman in life, and Arthas being a powerful paladin. Also Arthas was not affraid of using as much power as he could draw from the helmet, while Bolvar only used it when Sylvannas attacked, that's why his eyes were never blue till that moment. If you go and see the cinematic when Arthas puts on the helm for the 1st time, he opens his eyes to reveal that dk glow, you can also see it very clearly in the WotLK cinematic. Bolvar had his fiery eyes from being burned by Alextrasza, and never once drew the power of the helm until that very moment in this cinematic.

    • @TheShadowSythe
      @TheShadowSythe 3 года назад

      People issue was that none of that was public knowledge when the cinematic dropped so it just looked like Sylvanas was getting random OP power for no reason.
      Personally I think it would have been a lot better, narratively, if she struggled to defeat Bolvar at first and then has to tap into her new power to easily overcome him but w/e

    • @karlstrud8351
      @karlstrud8351 3 года назад

      Sylv has the exact same power as before, just a little powered up. But that does not makes her OP, people are just overestimating her opponent. Sylvanas is a former General Ranger (so she was already very strong while alive), now empowered by the magic of the lich king to become the first and the queen of Banshee. Saurfang is just an old orc warrior, no way he kills her, he knows it, Thrall knows it. Bolvar is a random human who can"t even totally control the scourge with the helm, and without frostmourne. He is not very powerful honestly, nothing comparable to Arthas.

Afterlives is the series for this expansion which in order are Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald and Revendreth. You also should watch the features trailer for the expansion which is not the same thing as the intro you watched here. You have missed every expansion features trailer so far. They tell a bit more about things in each expansion. Though original WoW didn't really have a features trailer. Last but not least in game cinematics and patch trailers though not every patch had a themed trailer most do and in game cinematics weren't a thing until Wrath of the Lich King.

  • @everythinggamingnow
    @everythinggamingnow 3 года назад

    This technically is and isnt the lich king. The "Lich King" is technically the helmet. Which was crafted by some dreadlord guys and infused with the soul of a guy called Ner Zhul, giving the power to control the undead masses (zombies and all that shizz). The soul in the helmet, tempted a guy called Arthus, to wear the armor, thus giving arthus some mega power, corrupting the hell outta him, giving him a big kinda power trip and giving Ner Zhul a kind of conduit to do stuff through. In Wrath of the lich king, we , the players, killed the lich king "Arthus" but made the discovery that "there must ALWAYS be a lich king" to keep the undead masses under control, otherwise they would just roam around and be total asses to living folk. So a guy called Bolvar, who was badly injured at the time (long story, kinda got roasted hard) took up the crown, and wore it. Condeming himself to a lifetime of chilling (ayyy), and just generaly keeping the whole undead peeps under control. In comes sylvanas saying "here a usurper sits on a frozen throne"because bolvar didnt really, kinda "earn" the helmet, it was just the most sensible option at the time. Sylvanas, is really salty about this, beacuse she had some spicy beef with the "Arthus" lich king, since he kinda killed her and turned her undead etc etc, killed her people etc etc, and so she's been really eager to get back at him. She turns up and this bolvar dude (kinda noob at being the lich king) is here, instead of her "mortal" (ayy) enemy. Very rough outline of the story with, probably, some mistakes. But the story between them literally takes 3 hours to tell propery (props to a youtuber called Nobbel87 for actually covering it over 3 hours)

    Not a parallel universe, it's the Shadowlands. Basically the realm of the afterlife in WoW-Lore. As she said in the cinematic, the veil between life and death is at it's thinest at Icecrown Citadel ... turns out she was quite literal there.
    And how is she that strong? Yeah ... WoW-players would like to know, too. I mean, she was allways a formidable warrior (she wasn't Ranger General of Silvermoon when she was still alive for nothing, after all) but her power level since BfA is absurd. Plot armor ... uhm ... plot muscles (?) basically. All we know is that some big bad (possibly?) in the Shadowlands made a deal with her and that enhanced her power greatly.
    Oh, and to know why this Lich King looks different than the one in the WotLK cinematic, you might want to watch the ingame-cinematic "Fall of the Lich King".

  • @viper9833

    She has the same power the LK has, but more, the jailor or death manipulates the owner of helm of domination and frostmourne before it was destroyed. Bolvar was able to fight it and stay in control of being the LK. Which ruined the jailors plan. Which is why he promised sylvannas this power and she is so strong now. Because she is now an agent of death basically. So since she destroyed the helm, he has a free pass down to Azeroth now to consumes Azeroths world soul. His plan was to use the LK to fight off the fel (burning legion) and the void. They both wanted the power of azeroths world soul.. which we thought arthas was in control and wanted power of the world soul as well.. come to find out he was not in control. He thought he was but he was so deep in the shit that he didn’t even know he was doing someone else’s dirty work. It makes sense on wow arthas was fighting void and fel because the jailor had the same plans.
    This makes me feel a little better. I thought slyvannas was op for no reason. She was OP because she is using the direct power that is in the helm of domination it self, which ironically means Bolvar was the STRONGEST lich king. Weird to think about.

  • @helloitsjason
    @helloitsjason 3 года назад

    So quick explanation of what you all just saw:
    The Lich King from the earlier cinematic is NOT the same as the one that we see in this one. The Lich King we saw in the Wrath of the Lich King is named Arthas, and was defeated at the end of that expansion, however, without a Lich King the Undead Scourge will run rampant on Azeroth. Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, who had been burned alive by dragonfire and tortured by Arthas, took up the mantle in his place (hence why Sylvanas calls him usurper). Bolvar is the Lich King we see in this cinematic. The reason Sylvanas did this is because the person that she got her powers from, known as the Jailor, is in the Shadowlands. The next videos you guys should look to watch are the Shadowlands: Afterlives videos, which give us a view into some of the fallen heroes from the Warcraft universe are experiencing their Afterlive (the Shadowlands are the afterlife for pretty much everyone in the Warcraft universe.)

    About the "Is he fire or ice" question. Well, the lich king is Ice, BUT! when Arthas died, someone had to keep the Scourge undead under control. There must always be a lich king. There was an event, before the battle with the lich king, called the Wrath gate. both horde and alliance lead the assault on the Lich King's doorstep when a renegade faction of the forsaken plans to usurp sylvanas and take over the Undead while defecting from the Horde. they attack everyone with poison barrels that kill everyone in seconds.
    There is a dragonflight, the red dragonflight, which is the aspect of Life. their flames purge but also bring new life (where their flames hit, things burn then huge plants grow rapidly).
    One of the Allliance heroes was purged by the dragon flame on death's door, because the read aspect didn't want the poison to spread so they purified the entire area with their flames since the flames on life would, logically, work best on disease and poison.
    He was burn till he was black but his life was preserved, now full of dragon flame (with lava veins and fiery eyes) but also a unique type of undead. He offered to become the jailor of the damned as a last service and put on the Helm of Domination which contains the will and personality of the Lich King, effectively brainwashing its wearer over time (all gear of the lich king does that but the helm is the one piece of gear that contains the Lich King himself.
    Therefore he now has both the power of fire from the dragons and the power of ice from the helm of domination. Oddly enough, the life force of the red aspect and the icy undeath of the Helm seem to be like water and oil and do not mix well. That is probably why this new Lich King has managed to keep his sense of self for so long

    Keep in mind this was Bolvar Fordragon, which was not the same lich king as Arthas Menethil, the one you see in the Wrath of the Lich king cinematic with the dragon and undead army. Had Sylvanas been fighting Arthas as the lich king, she wouldn't have even made it up to the Frozen Throne, much less actually win a fight against him. Arthas not only had the insane power granted by the lich kings crown(the Helm of Domination), but also the insane power of his sword(Frostmourne), fueled by the souls of thousands who he killed. Arthas was so strong that he is the only boss in the game to ever 1-shot the entire raid group and almost destroyed all life on the planet.
    Sylvanas also actually FOUGHT Arthas several times... the first time he fought her, he killed her in one hit and turned her into a banshee to serve him(and she later broke free of his control). She fought him a few more times, and the last time she fought Arthas was after he became the lich king. That time, she couldn't do shit. The whole fight was her and all of her allies running the fuck away from him while he just slowly walked closer blocking them off with walls of ice, until everybody barely managed to get away before he killed them. Arthas was strong as hell.

    The Lich King in this video is not the original that we saw in the other cinematic because he was defeated and killed, however Bolvar a Veteran for the Alliance realized that without the Lich King all the Undead that he commanded would attack randomly witch would be very bad, so as his last selfless act he put on the Lich King Crown becoming the new Lich King and froze himself. What we see in this video is Sylvanus strutting into Ice Crown Citadel, taking the Crown from Bolvar using the power she earned through bargaining with The Jailer ( Basically Satan of the W.o.W universe ) and shattering it to open a rift between the Shadowlands ( The W.o.W Equivelant of the afterlife ) and the world of Azeroth, witch is not only tearing the Shadowlands apart but also allowing The Jailer and his minions access to the living world, witch leads to Anduin the King of Stormwind ( The Good Looking Guy with the cool Sword ) and other defenders of Azeroth to being captured and taken into the Shadowlands, that about brings you up to date on W.o.W ( Other than the Afterlives, Warbringers, Harbingers, Lords of War and that final one with the Pandas that no one likes).

    I'm gonna add on with the comments like everybody else that knows the story.
    The entire story of the helmet was from Warcraft 3 and Arthas took the helmet and killed Sylvanas and turned her into a banshee.
    Sylvanas has been seeking revenge after she broke free from the control of Arthas.
    Fast forward to World of Warcraft, players raided the Frozen Throne and killed Arthas. Bolvar took over the role of the Lich King because "There must always be a Lich King" and kept the undead under control.
    What are you watching now is Sylvanas shatters the helmet and welcome to Shadowlands. :)

    i wait with bated breath for these so i can write massive lore explanations
    ALSO technically you guys aint done with cinematics. There are 4 cinematics for a realms of death. Theyre called Afterlives(like Warbringers). Id also maybe recommend watching the showcase that came after this trailer as it fleshes out the Shadowlands and gives you some hints at the Jailor which you guys might enjoy.
    So yah, basically they retconned the lore for shadowlands so that theres this mysterious death god called the Jailor who basically been manipulating everything from the start. The Lich King and his gear are tools of the Jailer. But all the Jailors plans keep failing; The first Lich King(nerzhul) doesnt do shit and sets up for Arthas(Wrath of the Lich King) to become in charge. Arthas gets slapped around and beaten. So the guy you see in this is technically the third Lich King, Bolvar Fordragon. He got poisoned by undead blight, and then scorched by dragonfire, then tortured by ArthasLK. Arthas' dads ghost says there must always be a LK so Bolvars take it and controls the Scourge undead. Now Bolvar is too strongwilled to be susceptible to the Jailor so soon after Arthas dies, Sylvanus tries to suicide off Icecrown and goes to hell/the Maw, and makes a deal with the Jailor.
    This is the reasoning for all the Sylvanus stuff since she is just trying to cause tons of death which gives her and the Jailor more power. Even her becoming Warchief was manipulation by the Jailors allies. So anyways as Saurfang points out in the mak'gora, sylvanus(and by extension the jailor) just keeps failing. So Sylvanus goes to Icecrown and breaks the Helm of Domination which due to much more complicated lore reasons, open up to the Shadowlands(which is where souls go when they die), specifically the Maw above icecrown(the big spooky tower coming out of the sky is called Torghast, its a new gauntlet max level challenge ingame).
    So sylvanus is crazy op cus of the death magic, the shadowlands are connected to the mortal realms for the first time ever(unless they change that in expac), the scourge is running free to attack everybody. All the Shadowlands afterlives are running low of the anima that powers them and their people. Anima being produced by mortal souls as during some point in Legion the machinery of death breaks and all souls stopped being judged and just get sent straight to the Maw/hell(where the Jailor is). Thats all the setup for the upcoming expac. Dont think i missed anything but feel free to holler out anything i missed, im sure the other WoW lorekeepers will help.
    Also if you watch the Afterlives cinematics, you should start with Bastion.
    Game it till you make it 👍

      There's a lot they haven't seen yet. Ingame cinematics, some of the earlier trailers for big patches (especially the ones like for Siege of Orgrimmar and Icecrown Citadel contain a bit of lore) and things like Warlords for example.
      Btw, how do you know that Sylvanas (not Sylvanus, come on dude :D) made a deal with the Jailor when she threw herself off Icecrown? Got a source for that? I know about the suicide attempt, but that's it.

    Ok, I think I may have explained this before on one of your videos but I'll go at it again: Sylvanas is a banshee. Arthas killed her and sucked out her soul, turning her into a banshee that was basically his slave until she broke free at a moment of weakness on his part. When Sylvanas was being all dead and such, she got a glimpse of hell/the afterlife/the Shadowlands (all the same thing in the wowverse) and she really doesn't want to go there. Basically, whenever anyone dies they go to the Shadowlands and just become fuel for the Old Gods. She called the Horde (and really all living things, by extension) useless because they fight amongst themselves in petty squabbles instead of the important fight, against death itself. When she breaks the Helm she tears open the veil between life and death so the living will be free to attack and defeat the ones basically harvesting them for food and therefore beat death. Life is a prison because it's basically like living in the Matrix; you do your thing but really you're a fuel cell for something else, so her tearing down the veil is like unplugging everyone from the Matrix at once and setting them free, if you've seen that film.

    But still he would whooped Sylvanas's ass if she hadn't received the power from the shadownlands, the Realm of Death. Everyone that she killed are souls who help her to be stronger.

    Finally I can begin digging into the lore of Sylvanas and The Lich King completely and comprehensively for you all! Sit back, get a cuppa, this will take a while. In advance, sorry for the wall of text, hope it is readable.
    We have to go back many many years, to the Second War between Orcs and Humans. (Battle For Azeroth is the Fourth War). So the Second War saw the rise of many legendary Orc Warlords. One of them is called Ner'Zhul, he was a necromancer. I say was because Ner'Zhul committed crimes against the Orcs' lords, the Demons of the Burning Legion. There's a whole longer story behind all that, tl;dr demons transformed orcs from warriors and hunter-gatherers into a violent bloodthirsty army that destroyed their homeworld, after which they travelled to Azeroth, the homeworld of the Elves, Trolls, Humans, Gnomes, Goblins, Dwarves, Tauren and many other species. Azeroth is a sort of nexus of magical energy, which see the rise of a LOT of magical creatures.
    Anyway, Ner'Zhul knew he had sinned against the Demon Lords, and so he tried to escape their clutches by opening portals to other worlds from his dying homeworld, Draenor. But the magical energies required to keep so many portals open tore the planet into hundreds of chunks and shards, leaving a broken world called Outland behind. You may remember this place, Saurfang went to that world to pick up that other orc when they fought the undead assassins showing that there's an active bridge between Azeroth and Outland still remaining.
    Ner'Zhul did not manage to escape. The Demon Lords found him and tortured him for years, before transforming him into a skeleton and encasing him in a suit of armor, giving him a sword that is able to steal a person's soul and trap it inside itself and a helmet that absorbs the "anima" or soul energy of those trapped souls, giving the wearer of the helmet all of that soul's memories and psychic potential. This is important, because in the Warcraft universe, psionics or psychic powers DO NOT EXIST NATURALLY. You got magic yes, but not psionics. Very very few people are capable of discovering such a thing even exists, and as such there is no magic that can guard against it. These two weapons are called Frostmourne (The sword) and the Helm of Dominion.
    After that, Ner'Zhul is sealed in a prison of eternal ice and hurled across the cosmos to crashland in Northrend, one of the four main continents of Azeroth. Here he tentatively learns to control his newfound powers to make undead servants and call out with his psychic powers for servants among those wicked in heart and mind. He finds many servants, wages a war against a kingdom of intelligent spider-insects called Nerubians and utilizes their technology to augment his powers, forming what is known as the Scourge of the Damned, an army of undead, necromancers and worshippers of death.
    The Scourge unleashes an attack against the human kingdom of Lordaeron (Lord-a-ron) and the young prince Arthas along with his mentor Uther the Lightbringer, a hero of the Second War, try to stop it. Little did they know this was the dawn of the Third War, spearheaded by the Scourge whose motive is to defeat any potential resistance Azeroth might hold before the Burning Legion invades. As time passes, Arthas becomes more and more enraged by the attrocities committed by both demon-worshipping remnants of the Orcish Horde and the Undead Scourge itself, who he falsely believe is lead by a Demon Lord. In fact those demon lords only pose as leaders while keeping the Lich King trapped, and the Lich King along with his most infamous servant Kel'Thuzad whisper promises of revenge into Arthas' ears.
    Arthas falls from grace, ordering an entire city of infected humans to be purged before they turn into the undead. Uther and Jaina Proudmore, Arthas' former lover and close friend, cannot stand for this and abandons Arthas' side, which further cements Arthas' transformation. Eventually he travels to Northrend ostensibly to kill the demon ruling the undead scourge but instead he finds Frostmourne and loses his soul to the weapon. Afterwards he does kill the demon he's been hunting but its too late, the blade owns his soul and through the blade, the Lich King now talks to him and commands him to assist the Scourge. Arthas obeys and returns to his homeland, killing his father as his first act of despoilation. Lordaeron falls in Arthas' wake and becomes the Land of the Undead, known collectively as the Plaguelands.
    Uther Lightbringer is also killed by Arthas during these events, while Jaina take a large armada of ships and travels west to another continent, fleeing the Scourge for the time being upon the insistent orders of a prophet who also sought Arthas' aid but was rejected before Arthas fell to the Scourge. This prophets words to Arthas at that time was "the more you try to liberate your people, the faster you will deliver them to their doom". Truer words have never been spoken. Arthas' campaign also lead him to the Elven kingdom of Quel'Thalas, north of the human kingdom. This is where Sylvanas comes in.
    Sylvanas Windrunner was a ranger-general of the High Elves, meaning her skills as a warrior and leader was very much accounted for. She harassed the Scourge for every inch of land they took into the High Elves' woods and Arthas got so fed up with this that he personally made sure she would eternally serve the Scourge by killing her personally with Frostmourne. Using his lord Ner'Zhul's powers he raised Sylvanas as a Banshee spirit, but she eventually recovered her physical body and being an elf she's vainly tried to maintain it in pristine condition since. Sylvanas' hatred for Arthas for killing her homeland, her friends and loved ones, its the main reason she managed to break free from the Scourge and form the Forsaken. The Forsaken is an undead faction that have liberated themselves from the control of the Scourge, making them immune to the Helm of Dominion and Frostmourne's powers. Not ALL undead free of the Scourge is part of the Forsaken though, most undeads minds are just too far gone to have any comprehensive thought other than rage and agony, making them mostly insane unless controlled by the Helm of Dominion.
    Arthas ended up travelling back to Northrend and shatter the icy prison of Nerzhul, who was at this point just a soul trapped in the helm of dominion. When Arthas puts that helmet on, his mind and Ner'zhuls merge into the Lich King, who goes into a comatose state barely keeping the Scourge in check for the next 6 years until he awakens once more (as seen in the Wrath of the Lich King cinematic). At the end of that expansion, the Lich King is killed and Sylvanas realizes her goal in unlife has been fulfilled and she has nothing left to live for. She throws herself off of the Lich King's tower onto the spikes below and dies. In death, she travels to the Shadowlands and encounters The Jailer, an enigmatic entity that offers her a one-of-a-kind deal.
    With this new deal, the Jailor is now her master. Sylvanas sets about enacting his plans for power. The Shadowlands are very similar to Frostmourne and the Helm of Dominion. Anima, or "soul energy" is both a currency and the lifeforce of the souls living in the Shadowlands and the Jailor's plan is to make HIS domain in the Shadowlands get all of the souls that come from the realms of the living. The more souls he gets, the stronger he gets and in turn, this strength is funneled into Sylvanas. Hence why she's so ridiculously powerful that she can 1v1 Saurfang and the Lich King.
    But wait, the Lich King died you say. Yes he did. But as he died, all the souls trapped within Frostmourne were released, and Arthas' father revealed himself to the heroes who defeated the Lich King, warning them: "Without its master, the undead Scourge will become an even greater threat. There must always be a Lich King." One of the heroes tried to take upon himself this burden but was stopped by another, former High Lord of the alliance, Bolvar Fordragon. This man almost died during the first attempt to assault the Lich King's castle, Icecrown Citadel, but was saved by the purifying flames of Red Dragons, who possess power over Life itself. After that he was taken prisoner by the Lich King and tortured for months, but his spirit did not break.
    Bolvar Fordragon takes upon himself the burden of being the new Lich King, since he is no longer living nor undead, but something between both. That's why the Lich King in the Shadowlands cinematic looks different to the one in the Wrath of the Lich King cinematic, they are two different people. This is why Sylvanas says "A usurper sits on a frozen throne", the Frozen Throne is the name of the Throne of the Lich King and she deems only Arthas worthy of sitting on it, not the fake Lich King Bolvar. #NotMyLichKing
    Anyway, Sylvanas' war against Life itself was a ploy to kill as many people as possible to empower her lord, the Jailor. Through this she got stronger as a direct result, strong enough that she could shatter the bonds of reality and enter the Shadowlands themselves by breaking the Helm of Dominion, a relic that originated from the Shadowlands. UNFORTUNATELY, in doing so Arthas' fathers threat comes to life. Azeroth gets violently assaulted by the now insane Scourge who have no ruler anymore. This is where the pre-event for Shadowlands begins, anything more I have less knowledge about as I no longer play the game. I'm sure others can fill in stuff I missed or skimmed over.
