One of the greatest interviews ever for me because as a mix/mastering engineer I am of service to the musicians and producers. Steve obviously gets it that you need to make sure the customer's wants and needs are met before they can do their thing. Also, how can you not love his attitude?
Trick/Tip that may/may not work for you, but did for me: If you have a comfortable and well designed room that people love, don't allow smoking in the studio. It allows the artist to take a break outside of the room. Once they come back in, they fall in love, over and over again in a single session. It's like reliving their first time, every time. It opens up their creativity even more. Great video btw! I'd love to hear more from Mr. Durr.
Time and time again I come back to this video and learn something new each time. I have a small home studio setup, plenty of acoustic treatment in it self made and these videos keep me goin'! Much love
The part of the focalpoint where the speakers are aimed at, was the most helpfull tip I could get. My speakers sound more open. Only a few degrees make a whole lot of difference! My dream-setup is made up of 3 workspaces: - Daily-workspace: A7x - Audio-for-video: A77x - Studio: S3h & T5v (I also need "crappy speakers" to check on)
This is the most insightful video I've seen on acoustics yet. Huge thanks to you all at Adam Audio for making this video and asking the questions that truely matter. Gear and acoustics matter sure, but the vibe of the studio in which the music is made is critical. Not to mention the band dad subject. One dude in every decent band or group is the real star of the show. I've seen this so many times and know it to be absolute fact. Its funny as hell to hear others point it out. Anyhow, great content guys!
Hi! Just found your channel because I’m building a studio. Thank you for sharing this interview! Now I know I don’t want to treat anything until I get in there and start recording in order to figure out what I need to do. Looking forward to learning more from you!
Wow.... this is such a great informative video. The vibe Steve's got is amazing, I could listen to him talk for hours. Any more video's with Steve would be awesome! Thanks guys!
This is a great conversation, well lead and straight forward answers. I especially appreciate the information about HVAC. We did exactly what Steve warned ... our system is too big. No need for extra power - airspeed - noise. Thanks for posting.
If the control room is not right the monitors will never be accurately heard. If the studio vibe isn't good the performance will be diminished. Listen to what experts like Steve Durr have to say...over my 40 year career as a studio and auditorium designer/builder I have learned so much from listening and studying men like Steve. You must have a love for music and producing it emotionally, technically and sonically........S.Walker "Genesis Productions" ASA, AIA, MS and A7X owner.
Soooooo good! I'm a musician but I'm nowhere near building a home studio let alone a place big enough to need a control room but this was fascinating! Thanks
Really great video. Great job with questions and answers. Any info available on what kind of chairs you are both sitting on? Do you have any recommendations or guidance for choosing a good studio desk chair?
Excellent video and instructive and makes a heck of a lot of sense on many levels.... Speaking of near fields sounding good, what is the model number of the near fields on top of the console. Thanks... Philip
I wonder what isolation rubber feet he is using? I am looking for some Isolation pads for my A7V's and I am surprised at the price Auralex, Iso-Acoustic sells their stuff. Any suggetions guys?
Is the focal point 2ft behind listening position in that sized room specifically? I can only assume it's a smaller measurement in my smaller room? Or is it dependent on how far your listening position is from you monitors?
good brand or store is making or selling good products. but a great store or brand makes good products and making good intresting video about their video and every thing that goes with it.
What would be the point of adding sound board and Sheetrock on top of the existing wall? Three of my walls are porous concrete and one + ceiling are drywall.
Hey guys! This is a super informative video.! Currently in the middle of a studio build project and have been looking at your speakers to use as the main monitors. But while we are still building I’ve been thinking a lot about air con actually and I’m a little stumped.. would you guys have any recommendations for a quiet air con unit for a smallish space around 5m x 6m? Would a split system be a good idea? Also, is an aircon unit enough to cover us for ventilation or should we also add some vents with silent flow fans? Thanks again guys! Priceless stuff in this video Ethan
Hi Ethan, we reached back out to Steve about this question and here's what he had to say: "The HVAC question is hard to answer however we have several clients with mini splits, some are ducted and others are not. It depends on several factors, how well is the space insulated, is it in a very hot environment, such as South America, how much equipment is in the room, lots of tube gear, etc. They will work well in a control room; you may have to turn it off when recording with an open mic, in the studio, as mics pick up everything especially when doing vocals or acoustic instruments. That is a difficult question but I hope this helps." Let us know if you have any further questions!
@@ADAMAudioBerlin thank you guys so much for the response in this. I know it’s been a while but thought I’d revisit this to say we’ve just about finished the studio and aircon was a breeze 😏 Also thought I’d let you know we have been very pleased with our A7Xs, we chose them as the mains for our control room. 👌🏽 Thanks guys
Totally the little things that count. So, so may 'great' studios with squeaky chairs, dead batteries in tuners, intermittent headphones, no teaspoons, guitar / music stands etc etc. Desk and mics are definitely secondary to vibe, practicalities and comfort.
What gear does your dream studio have? Let us know below 👇
Speakers from Adam Audio !
@RMK It's a must 😜
A good Vibe!
@Sergio Sicard Absolutely! Can make or break even the best studios 👌

i could listen to Steve talk all day.
Us too! So much knowledge to absorb ☺️
@@ADAMAudioBerlin would love a regular series if at all possible.
Does anyone know what those feet from Home Depot that Steve mentions here are?
Found this at the right time. I just started the foundation for my studio
Thanks for watching!
This was sooo great, I would have taken 2 hours of Steve Durr!!!! Perspective, comfort and motivation to create are keys to our work. Great again!!
Thank you for watching, Alexis! 🙌

Hi there, this is our A7X studio monitor. Best!
@@ADAMAudioBerlin Thanks. I'll check them out.

Tryin to get what he says at 10:45, "a layer of soundboard and a layer of (5hg rarecon?)"
What is this 5hg? Please correct me. Ty.
5/8" sheetrock (aka drywall). 1/2" and 5/8" thick are the most commonly used for construction.
Great stuff here. I see a visit to Home Depot in the near future.
Thanks for watching! We hope some of these tips will help 👍

You know damn well that the greatest part of a studio that he is ever made is where Garth hides all the bodies.
Horizontal and vertical monitors and a fire recording booth 😂✊🏾

Steve has seriously big ears
This mas is as wise as cool!
Nothing wrong with Rca over short runs
Are studio designers expensive? Or is it worth doing your own research and everything yourself?
He dates himself by referring to guitars from Sears.
Wow. Absolutely incredible video. Thank you!
